Pijul

What Pijul is
Pijul is a distributed version control system built on a patch-based theory. It is free, open source, licensed under GPL version 2 or later, and may be used commercially. Collaboration uses sending and receiving patches between repositories. Independent changes can be applied in any order without changing the resulting version identifier. During merges, Pijul preserves line order and shows conflicts when the order cannot be determined; resolving a conflict applies consistently to the same two changes elsewhere. Repositories can be partially cloned, and work from a partial clone can merge into the full repository. The FAQ also describes retrieving selected patches and their dependencies for files in a large remote repository. Pijul supports Linux, macOS, and Windows through community-maintained binaries, with source installation recommended through Cargo and Rust. It offers sparse checkout, native large-file handling, self-hosted deployment, and hosted repositories through Pijul Nest.
Who it suits
Pijul suits developers and teams needing distributed, patch-based version control, partial clones, or self-hosted repositories. It is available across Linux, macOS, and Windows.
What it does well
- Free and open source
- Distributed patch-based versioning
- Partial clones can merge back
- Preserves line order in merges
- Supports sparse checkout
What to know first
- Large-file diff algorithm is not currently good
- Windows binaries are community-maintained
- Recommended installation requires Cargo and Rust
Verdict
Pijul provides a focused distributed workflow centered on patches, consistent conflict resolution, and flexible repository subsets. Its large-file diff limitation and source-oriented installation are important considerations.
