Pants

What Pants is
Pants is a free build system for codebases of different sizes, with a focus on Python, Go, Java, Scala, Kotlin, Shell, and Docker. It installs and coordinates tools such as compilers, code generators, dependency resolvers, test runners, linters, formatters, packagers, and REPLs. It can inspect import statements to infer file dependencies, reducing manual declarations. The engine is written in Rust, while build rules use typed Python 3. Its execution model includes concurrency, fine-grained invalidation, hermetic execution, caching, and remote execution. Developers can add custom rules through the plugin API, which follows the same execution semantics as core rules. Built-in support covers Docker, Pex, Protodoc, Thrift, Protobuf, Helm, linting and formatting, packaging, and coverage. Lockfiles pin transitive dependency versions and expected SHA256 hashes, which Pants checks against downloaded artifacts. It runs on Linux, macOS, and Windows with WSL 2, subject to system requirements.
Who it suits
Pants may suit development teams working in its supported languages who want a shared build system for coordinating tools and dependencies. Its caching, remote execution, and plugin API also suit codebases that need extensible build rules.
What it does well
- Free under the Apache License 2.0.
- Infers file dependencies from imports.
- Provides caching and remote execution.
- Lockfiles pin versions and expected artifact hashes.
- Runs on Linux, macOS, and Windows with WSL 2.
What to know first
- No tight PyCharm or VSCode integrations yet.
- Alpine Linux is not currently supported.

Getting started
- Visit pantsbuild.org.
- Check that your operating system and architecture meet the supported system requirements.
- Use the installer to download and validate the matching Pants binary.
- The installer places Pants in ~/.local/bin.
- Use community channels such as Slack, mailing lists, or GitHub for help.
Verdict
Pants brings build orchestration, dependency inference, and execution features together for several languages. Check its supported systems and IDE limitations against your development environment before adopting it.
Questions
How much does Pants cost?
Pants is free under the Apache License 2.0, with a no-charge, royalty-free license.
Which operating systems does Pants support?
Pants supports Linux x86_64 or ARM64, macOS 10.15 or newer on Intel or Apple Silicon, and Windows 10 with WSL 2.
Which languages does Pants focus on?
Its focus includes Python, Go, Java, Scala, Kotlin, Shell, and Docker.
Is Pants open source?
Yes. Its Open source plan is provided under the Apache License 2.0.
Does Pants have IDE integrations?
The project says it does not yet have tight IDE integrations such as a PyCharm plugin or a VSCode extension that runs Pants on the IDE's behalf.
Can Pants run on Alpine Linux?
No. Alpine Linux is not currently supported because Pants is distributed as a manylinux wheel that requires glibc.
