Essay alternatives
Essay brings planning, drafting, editing, citations, and sharing into one writing workflow. Its outlines, distraction-free drafting space, rewriting and reordering tools, and linked research notes cover work from early ideas through revision. It also supports bibliography formatting, academic exports, and Zotero integration on Pro. The free plan allows three essays, 5,000 words, and 12 notes; Core starts at $8 per month billed annually, and Pro starts at $12 per month billed annually. Essay is available on iOS and the web, while native mobile apps are on its roadmap and working offline is described as a live feature.

Readers may look elsewhere for a more specialized research tool, narrower citation utility, or a workflow aimed at a particular academic task. Before switching, consider whether you need a full writing process or a focused service for literature discovery, source-based thesis drafting, college applications, or formatted references. Compare platform availability, the scope of free access, and whether citations and research tools fit your work. Essay’s features span several stages; some alternatives emphasize one stage or a specific audience instead.
