What Chion is

Chion turns plain-English questions about PostgreSQL into code-validated, read-only SQL and interactive D3 charts, with the SQL displayed beneath each chart. It connects directly to PostgreSQL without ETL or a warehouse copy. Supported connection options include Amazon RDS, Azure Database for PostgreSQL, Google Cloud SQL, Neon, Supabase, and self-hosted PostgreSQL. Validators reject anything other than read-only SELECT queries before they reach the database, and results are capped at 1,000 rows or 12,000 cells.

Chion provides eight chart types: single-line, multi-series line, dual-axis line, stacked area, standard bar, grouped bar, stacked bar, and animated bar race. Saved queries can be compiled into portable SQL skill files for Claude Code and Codex. Plans are billed monthly: Starter is $29/seat/mo, Pro is $99/seat/mo, and Max is $299/seat/mo; each includes a 7-day trial. Enterprise has custom per-team pricing. Chion says credentials are encrypted in an AES-256-GCM vault, with plaintext held in memory for at most 60 seconds or five reads before purging. The model receives the question, table and column names, result rows used for the narrative, and sampled column values. Chion says it is not SOC 2 certified and does not support HIPAA-covered workloads.

Chion suits people who need to explore PostgreSQL data by asking questions in plain English and reviewing the resulting SQL and charts. It may also suit developers who want saved queries compiled as SQL skill files for Claude Code or Codex.

Starter costs $29/seat/mo and includes 50 credits per month and three queries per hour. Pro costs $99/seat/mo with 250 monthly credits and ten queries per hour; all query results are capped at 1,000 rows or 12,000 cells.

Verdict

Choose Chion if you want a direct PostgreSQL question-to-SQL workflow with interactive charts and read-only query validation. Look elsewhere if you need HIPAA-covered workloads or SOC 2 certification, or if its per-seat monthly plans do not fit.
