Agola

What Agola is
Agola is a free, open-source CI/CD system for workflows from code builds through deployments. Definitions live in Git repositories and can start after pushes, tags, or pull requests. Each task runs in a container using a selected image, with execution available in Kubernetes or local Docker. Runs can restart from the beginning or from failed tasks; restarting from completed tasks is listed as coming soon. Agola supports fan-in, fan-out, and multi-architecture workflows, plus GitHub, GitLab, Gitea, and custom Git sources. Jobs can also start from a local repository with one command without a prior push. Secrets can be assigned at organization, project-group, or project level and inherited by children. Deployment uses user-managed components, PostgreSQL or SQLite, and POSIX or S3 object storage. There is no hosted option. The gateway handles external authentication and authorization, while internal service APIs should not be exposed externally.
Who it suits
Agola suits teams that want free, open-source, self-hosted CI/CD with YAML pipelines, pull-request checks, containerized tasks, and self-hosted runners. It requires managing deployment, storage, and execution infrastructure.
What it does well
- Open-source Apache 2.0 license
- Kubernetes or local Docker execution
- GitHub, GitLab, and Gitea sources
- Fan-in, fan-out, multi-architecture workflows
- Artifact or dependency cache
What to know first
- No hosted option
- Remote secret managers are planned
- Completed-task restart is not available yet
- Internal APIs should not be externally exposed
Verdict
Agola provides a broad self-hosted workflow system with Git triggers, container runs, advanced workflow patterns, and flexible execution environments. Teams must operate the service themselves and currently rely on local secrets.
