Apply Windows 11 Accent Colors to Supported RGB Devices

Windows 11 can apply your chosen Windows accent color to compatible RGB and LED hardware through Dynamic Lighting. Set the accent in Settings > Personalization > Colors, then open Settings > Personalization > Dynamic Lighting, enable Use Dynamic Lighting on my devices, and choose the accent-color effect when it is offered for your device. The feature requires compatible hardware and does not work with every RGB peripheral, internal component, or wireless connection.

What you need before matching RGB to the Windows accent

Windows treats the interface accent and hardware lighting as related but separate settings. The accent color controls items such as Windows surfaces, links, and highlights. Dynamic Lighting controls LEDs in compatible keyboards, mice, controllers, headsets, PC components, and other supported devices.

  • A Windows 11 installation with the Dynamic Lighting page in Settings.
  • An RGB or LED device that appears as a device card on that page.
  • Current device firmware and a connection mode supported by Microsoft and the device maker.

Microsoft defines Dynamic Lighting around the open HID LampArray standard and its Windows lighting APIs. That creates a common control path, but it is not a guarantee that every product in a supported category will appear. A model can be listed in a manufacturer range yet lack support in a particular revision, firmware version, or wireless mode. Check Microsoft’s current Dynamic Lighting compatible-device list for the exact model before treating a device as supported.

The feature is a control layer, not a universal RGB translator. Windows can send the accent color only when the device exposes compatible lighting controls. A proprietary RGB product that works solely through its vendor utility may not provide a card, an accent-matching effect, or the same controls in Dynamic Lighting.

1. Choose the Windows 11 accent color

Start with the color you want Windows and the lighting devices to use.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Personalization, then Colors.
  3. Under the accent-color setting, choose Automatic if Windows should derive a color from your desktop background.
  4. Choose Manual if you want to select the color yourself. Pick one from Recent colors or Windows colors, or select View colors for a custom choice.

The selected accent is the source color Dynamic Lighting can use. If you later change the accent here, the lighting effect can change as well when the device is configured to follow the Windows accent. Automatic mode can produce a different source color when the desktop background changes, while Manual mode keeps the selected choice until you change it.

2. Turn on Dynamic Lighting

  1. In Settings, go to Personalization > Dynamic Lighting.
  2. Turn on Use Dynamic Lighting on my devices.
  3. Look near the top of the page for cards representing connected compatible devices.

Global controls below the cards apply across connected devices. A device-specific setting on an individual card takes precedence for that device, so two peripherals can deliberately use different effects even when global settings are enabled.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the Dynamic Lighting page is missing, or the page opens without a card for your hardware, do not assume that reinstalling an RGB utility will fix it. First compare the exact model and connection type with Microsoft’s current compatibility list, then check the manufacturer’s firmware and connection requirements. Microsoft has documented historical cases in which listed devices required newer firmware or did not support wireless connections; an older compatibility announcement is not a substitute for the current list.

Use the device card as the practical test. A product category such as “keyboard” or “motherboard” only describes a type of hardware Microsoft may support. It does not establish support for every brand, revision, internal controller, or connection mode in that category.

3. Select the accent-color lighting effect

  1. On the Dynamic Lighting page, select the card for the device you want to configure, or use the global controls if all compatible devices should behave alike.
  2. Open Effects.
  3. Choose the option that matches the device to the Windows accent color when that option is shown.
  4. Adjust brightness or other available color and effect controls if needed.

The exact effect names and controls are device-dependent. Microsoft describes Dynamic Lighting as a way to extend the Windows accent color to nearby RGB devices and synchronize effects across devices from different brands, but a connected product exposes only the controls its firmware supports. If the accent-matching option is not present, that device is not exposing that effect through Dynamic Lighting.

Matching does not mean every LED will necessarily look identical to a monitor or to another device. Different hardware can expose different brightness and color controls, and some devices may support only a subset of effects. The meaningful confirmation is that the accent-matching effect is available on the card and that no higher-priority controller immediately replaces it.

Which hardware can appear in Dynamic Lighting?

Microsoft’s documentation identifies these device categories as possible Dynamic Lighting targets. They are categories, not a promise that every model in them is compatible.

For a purchase, verify the exact model, firmware, and connection mode in Microsoft’s current list. A compatible keyboard connected by USB does not establish that the same keyboard’s Bluetooth mode, a related model, or a different internal component will work.

The HID LampArray standard is the common hardware path Microsoft cites for native lighting control. In practice, support can depend on the device’s implementation, its firmware, and whether Windows receives the lighting interface over the selected connection. Treat the supported-device list and the maker’s firmware notes as model-specific requirements, not broad promises about a product family.

Global controls versus a device’s own settings

Global settings

Controls below the device cards are intended to apply to connected compatible devices together. They are useful when a keyboard, mouse, and other hardware should share one color or effect. This is the simplest way to create a synchronized setup across brands that all appear as compatible cards.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Per-device settings

Each device card can expose settings that override the global choice for that device. Use a per-device setting when one item should keep a different brightness, effect, or color while the rest follow the Windows accent. If a per-device choice seems to be ignored, verify that you are changing the card for the physically intended device rather than a second entry created by a different connection.

Why a device may appear more than once

Microsoft associates ambient-light control settings with the device and its USB port. Moving hardware to another USB port can therefore create a separate device entry or a separate ambient-control configuration. This is expected behavior rather than evidence that the device has duplicated itself. Reapply the desired effect to the entry associated with the port currently in use.

When another app controls the LEDs

Windows and lighting applications can share control of a device. Dynamic Lighting provides foreground-app control and a Background light control area for ambient controllers. If another controller has higher priority, it can take over the LEDs, making the accent effect, brightness, or Effects choices appear unresponsive.

  1. Open Settings > Personalization > Dynamic Lighting.
  2. Expand Background light control.
  3. Review the controllers listed for the device.
  4. If Dynamic Lighting should control the LEDs, move its controller above the competing controller in the priority order.

A device that is not selected for Background light control may operate in its autonomous mode and follow firmware defaults. That mode can be useful when you intentionally want the device’s own firmware or a vendor application to manage lighting instead of Windows.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Foreground control matters as well. An application that is actively using a compatible device can receive lighting control, so the LEDs may change when that application opens or closes. Before repeatedly changing the accent color, identify whether Windows, a foreground app, a background controller, or autonomous firmware currently owns the device.

Troubleshoot accent matching that does not work

The device is not listed

  • Confirm that Use Dynamic Lighting on my devices is enabled.
  • Check the exact model against Microsoft’s current compatible-device list.
  • Install the latest firmware recommended by the manufacturer.
  • Test the connection mode documented as supported; do not assume a wireless mode works because the wired mode does.
  • Reconnect the hardware and reopen the Dynamic Lighting page to see whether a device card appears.

If the page itself is unavailable, check that the Windows installation exposes Dynamic Lighting and then consult Microsoft’s current support documentation. Do not use the July 2023 announcement’s model list as a current compatibility catalog; hardware support and firmware requirements can change.

The device appears, but Effects or brightness does nothing

  • Open the device card and confirm that the control is being applied to that specific device rather than only to a different global or per-device entry.
  • Inspect Background light control and move the intended Dynamic Lighting controller to the top if another controller has priority.
  • Check whether the device changed USB ports; Windows may have created a separate ambient-control entry tied to the new port.
  • Check whether an active foreground lighting application is taking control.

The color is different from the Windows accent

  • Return to Settings > Personalization > Colors and verify the selected accent under Automatic or Manual.
  • In Dynamic Lighting, confirm that the accent-matching effect is selected for the relevant device card.
  • Check whether a foreground or background lighting application is overriding Windows.
  • Allow for device-specific behavior: the hardware may expose a limited color range or an effect that does not reproduce the Windows color exactly.

You prefer the manufacturer’s lighting software

Turn off Use Dynamic Lighting on my devices. Microsoft says devices then return to their default non-Dynamic Lighting behavior, allowing firmware or another application to control the lighting. This is also a useful test: if the vendor utility works after Dynamic Lighting is disabled, the issue may be controller priority rather than a failed LED system.

How Dynamic Lighting fits with Windows and application control

Dynamic Lighting is a native Windows control layer, not merely a color picker. Microsoft’s Windows Experience Blog described the September 27, 2023 Windows 11 feature update as enabling users to control RGB devices directly in Windows Settings, extend the Windows accent color to nearby devices, and synchronize effects across brands. Microsoft’s Windows Insider Blog described Dynamic Lighting on July 21, 2023 as native control for lighting devices implementing the open HID LampArray standard.

This shared-control model explains why the same hardware can respond differently depending on which application is active, which controller has priority, and whether the device is assigned to an autonomous firmware mode. Resolve the control owner before changing colors repeatedly; otherwise a higher-priority controller can immediately replace the setting you just made.

Buying or checking hardware for this feature

You do not need to buy anything if your existing hardware appears in Dynamic Lighting. If you are choosing a compatible RGB keyboard or another peripheral, use this checklist:

  • Search Microsoft’s current Dynamic Lighting list for the exact model number.
  • Verify whether the listed support applies to wired, wireless, or both connection modes.
  • Check the required firmware version and update process.
  • Decide whether you need one synchronized effect across devices or separate per-device control.
  • Confirm that the product’s LEDs are exposed through the supported HID LampArray and Windows lighting path rather than only through a proprietary application.

A compatible RGB keyboard is a sensible optional purchase when you need a supported device, but compare exact-model support before ordering. Connection mode is part of compatibility, and a model that works over USB may not work over Bluetooth or another wireless link. The setup itself has no separate Windows purchase requirement; the cost is limited to hardware only if your existing devices are unsupported.

Compatibility can change as Windows, firmware, and device support are updated. Treat a current Microsoft listing and the manufacturer’s current documentation as the authority for a particular model.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What happens when you change the accent later?

When a device is configured to match the Windows accent, changing the accent under Settings > Personalization > Colors changes the source color available to Dynamic Lighting. If the hardware does not visibly change, check the device’s selected effect and the controller priority before changing other settings. A device running autonomous firmware or being controlled by another foreground or background application will not necessarily follow the Windows accent.

If you use Automatic accent selection, a desktop-background change can also change the Windows source color. With Manual selection, the chosen color remains until you pick another one. In either case, the device still needs to expose the matching effect and remain under Dynamic Lighting control.

  • Firmware and connection mode meet the current compatibility guidance.

Frequently asked questions

Does this work with every RGB keyboard, mouse, or motherboard?

No. Microsoft lists supported devices and uses the HID LampArray and Windows lighting paths, but a category listing is not a guarantee for every model or revision. Check the exact model, firmware, and connection mode.

Can I use wireless RGB hardware?

Only when that device and connection mode are supported. Historical Microsoft guidance warned that some listed devices did not support wireless connections, so verify the current list and manufacturer documentation instead of assuming wired support carries over.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why is the accent-matching option missing?

The connected device may not expose that effect through Dynamic Lighting, or it may not be fully compatible. Confirm that the device appears as a card, update firmware, and check the exact model in Microsoft’s current compatibility list.

Can different devices use different colors?

Yes, when their cards expose per-device settings. Global controls apply across compatible devices, while a device-specific setting overrides the global choice for that device.

Why does changing USB ports create another entry?

Ambient-control settings are associated with the device and its USB port. Moving the hardware can therefore produce a separate entry or configuration. Apply the setting to the entry for the port currently in use.

What if vendor software keeps replacing the Windows color?

Open Background light control, review controller priority, and move the Dynamic Lighting controller above a competing controller if Windows should own the LEDs. Also check for an active foreground application. Alternatively, turn off Dynamic Lighting and let the vendor software or firmware control the device.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does changing the Windows accent require buying RGB hardware?

No. The process requires no purchase when you already own compatible hardware. Buying a supported RGB keyboard or another peripheral is optional; verify exact-model support before purchasing.

Bottom line

Set the accent in Settings > Personalization > Colors, enable Dynamic Lighting in Settings > Personalization > Dynamic Lighting, and select the accent-matching effect under Effects. The result depends on exact-model compatibility, firmware, connection mode, and which application has lighting priority. If Windows cannot see the device or another controller owns it, the accent setting alone cannot make the LEDs follow Windows.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Dynamic Lighting support every RGB device?

No. Support depends on the exact model, firmware, connection mode, and the device’s HID LampArray and Windows lighting implementation. Check Microsoft’s current compatible-device list.

Why is my RGB device missing from Dynamic Lighting?

Enable Use Dynamic Lighting on my devices, verify the exact model and connection mode, install current firmware, and reconnect the hardware. A device category alone does not guarantee support.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Can I match several brands at once?

Yes, compatible devices can use global Dynamic Lighting controls and synchronize effects across brands. Per-device settings can override the global choice.

Why does another RGB program override my accent color?

Foreground applications and higher-priority background controllers can take control. Review Background light control and move the intended Dynamic Lighting controller above competing controllers.

Will wireless mode work if USB mode works?

Not necessarily. Wireless compatibility is device-specific, so verify the connection mode in Microsoft’s current list and the manufacturer’s documentation.

Do I need to buy hardware for accent matching?

No. Existing compatible hardware works without a separate purchase. If your devices are unsupported, verify exact-model support before buying a compatible RGB peripheral.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Use Colors to choose the Windows accent, then use Dynamic Lighting and its Effects menu to apply that color to compatible RGB hardware. Exact-model support, firmware, connection mode, and controller priority determine whether the match works.
