Applied Digital announced on October 6, 2026, an agreement providing access to up to 1 gigawatt (GW) of potential power capacity in Finland. The company plans an AI Factory campus that could scale to that amount and anticipates initial power availability beginning in 2028. This is a proposed development opportunity—not a completed, fully powered, leased, or confirmed 1 GW facility.
What Applied Digital announced
Applied Digital says it has secured access under an agreement to up to 1 GW of potential power capacity for a planned AI data center campus. The announcement describes the opportunity as the first use of its AI Factory campus development model outside the United States. The company says it has begun marketing the site and is discussing it with global hyperscale customers, but did not identify any prospective customer or disclose a lease. Applied Digital’s announcement characterizes the power as potential capacity, not power already delivered to an operating campus.

Is the 1 GW Finland project confirmed?
The agreement and development opportunity have been announced, but the full campus is not confirmed as built or under construction. Applied Digital says future investment and development decisions will depend on customer demand, commercial milestones, and necessary regulatory and development requirements. The company’s announcement does not establish that the entire 1 GW is firm, available now, or committed to a customer. Industry publication Data Center Dynamics also reported on October 6, 2026, that full project details had not been shared.

Why did Applied Digital choose Finland?
CEO and chairman Wes Cummins said Finland appealed because the company sees similarities between the Nordics and North Dakota, including climate, energy, connectivity, and potential development scale. Those are Applied Digital’s stated reasons, not independently measured comparisons. Cummins also called the move a “deliberate first step, not a change in our strategy,” and said the company’s near-term focus remained execution in the United States. The company is presenting Finland as an international development opportunity alongside that focus.

Pure Data Centres announced a separate planned AI campus in Seinäjoki on July 14, 2026. Its release described an initial 110 MW phase and a campus that could scale above 550 MW, subject to permissions and contracting; it said the first phase was fully leased and that planning and power requirements were secured. These are Pure Data Centres’ reported project details, not Applied Digital’s. The two announcements do not provide enough common technical or financial information for a like-for-like campus comparison.
