Apple’s Reported M4 Mac Overhaul Mostly Happened—but the Rollout Was Staggered

Apple’s reported plan to move its Mac lineup to M4-family chips was largely borne out, but it was never a promise that every Mac would launch at once—or use the same chip. The report appeared in April 2024; Apple began releasing M4 Macs later that year, continued the transition in 2025, and had moved key MacBook lines to M5 by 2026. The phrase “starting later this year” referred to late 2024, not a current forecast.

What Apple was reportedly planning in April 2024

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman reported on April 11, 2024, that Apple was preparing an M4 generation with an emphasis on artificial-intelligence performance and planned to bring M4-family processors to essentially the full Mac range over late 2024 and 2025. The expected product families included MacBook Pro, MacBook Air, Mac mini, iMac, Mac Studio and Mac Pro. Bloomberg’s report was reporting about Apple’s plans, not an Apple announcement or a confirmed launch schedule.

The report made several distinct claims: that M4 production was approaching, that the chips would bring AI-related and memory improvements, that new Macs would begin arriving in late 2024, and that the transition would extend across the product family during 2025. It did not establish exact launch dates, identical specifications, or the same M4 configuration in every Mac.

So the broad direction was credible and largely validated, while “all Macs with M4” is too literal. Apple staggered the releases and used different chip tiers—and, in one important case, a different generation—to serve different products.

How the rollout unfolded

Period What happened What it shows
Late 2024 Apple introduced M4 versions of the iMac, Mac mini and MacBook Pro. The transition began, but did not happen across the range in one launch.
2025 M4 MacBook Air models followed, and Apple announced a Mac Studio with M4 Max and M3 Ultra options. The move continued across categories, with distinct chips and configurations rather than one uniform M4 design.
2026 Apple’s March Mac announcements identified the MacBook Air with M5 and MacBook Pro with M5 Pro and M5 Max. The 2024 M4 claim is now historical; key notebook lines have moved to a newer generation.

Apple officially announced M4 MacBook Pro models on October 30, 2024, with availability beginning November 8. The lineup included M4, M4 Pro and M4 Max, rather than a single configuration; Apple listed a U.S. starting price of $1,599 for the 14-inch M4 model at launch. Apple’s announcement is confirmation of that product release, distinct from the earlier roadmap report.

Apple announced its Mac Studio with M4 Max and M3 Ultra on March 5, 2025, with availability starting March 12. The M3 Ultra configuration supported up to 512GB of unified memory and up to 16TB of SSD storage, according to Apple. Those maximums apply to particular configurations, not every Mac Studio. Apple’s Mac Studio announcement makes the mixed-generation strategy plain: this was not literally an M4 chip in every Mac.

What “AI-focused” meant—and what it did not

Apple’s M4 messaging emphasized machine-learning accelerators, the GPU, Neural Engine and memory bandwidth as parts of a system intended to support AI tasks, including large language models. In its October 2024 MacBook Pro announcement, Apple described those hardware elements as supporting AI workloads. Those are manufacturer claims, and any performance comparison should be read in the context of the specific systems and workloads Apple chose. Apple’s M4 MacBook Pro announcement

“AI-focused” did not mean the M4 was a separate AI-only processor. It is a general-purpose system-on-chip: CPU, GPU, Neural Engine, memory architecture and media capabilities work together. Nor does a newer Neural Engine guarantee that every AI app will run faster. Results depend on whether the app supports the relevant hardware, the task being run, available unified memory, and whether the work happens on the Mac or in a cloud service.

Unified memory is shared by the CPU and GPU, which can help with graphics and local machine-learning workloads. But buyers generally choose its capacity when ordering; it is not an upgradeable RAM slot. That makes capacity a long-term purchase decision. A headline maximum—such as the Mac Studio’s 512GB—is not the memory included in its entry configuration, and many users will not need anything close to it.

What the transition meant for each Mac

MacBook Air

The Air was part of the reported M4 roadmap but followed the first late-2024 wave. Its appeal remains portability and everyday versatility: study, office work, browsing, travel and moderate creative tasks. Thinness and passive cooling can matter more than peak short-burst benchmark results; sustained heavy rendering or other long-running workloads may call for an actively cooled model.

By Apple’s March 2026 Mac announcements, the Air had moved to M5. Anyone considering a discounted or refurbished M4 Air should compare its complete configuration and price with a current M5 Air, rather than assuming either that the newest chip is automatically the better value or that any M4 discount is worthwhile. MacBook Pro

The M4 Pro lineup showed why the chip name alone is not enough to compare models. Apple offered M4, M4 Pro and M4 Max configurations, with differences in performance, memory bandwidth and unified-memory capacity. The launch announcement also distinguished Thunderbolt 4 on the base M4 model from Thunderbolt 5 on M4 Pro and M4 Max configurations. Check the precise configuration for the ports, display support, memory and battery claims that matter to your work; battery life varies with model and workload.

Apple Intelligence compatibility is not the same thing as professional AI performance. A Mac that can use Apple’s supported features may still be a poor fit for a local model, heavy video work or another demanding task if its memory or GPU capacity is insufficient.

Mac mini

The M4 Mac mini was part of the first late-2024 wave and represented a product redesign as well as a chip update. For a desktop buyer, its value depends partly on what is already on the desk: a Mac mini does not include the integrated screen and battery of a notebook, and buyers starting from scratch need to account for a display, keyboard and mouse. Compare the M4 and M4 Pro configurations against that total setup cost.

iMac

The M4 iMac also arrived in the late-2024 wave. Its all-in-one format suits buyers who value a desktop with an integrated display and straightforward setup. When comparing it with a Mac mini, look beyond processor generation: the display, ports, camera, included accessories, memory and storage can affect the choice as much as raw performance.

Mac Studio

The 2025 Mac Studio paired M4 Max with M3 Ultra rather than replacing every tier with an M4-branded chip. Apple’s stated maximum of 512GB unified memory and 16TB SSD applied to the M3 Ultra configuration. The different options served different performance and capacity targets; “Mac Studio with M4” therefore did not describe the whole range.

A Studio is worth considering when a workload can use sustained performance, high memory capacity, or its connectivity—for example, demanding video, 3D, software compilation or large local AI projects. Those advantages do not make it a sensible default for general computing, and a display and peripherals may be separate costs.

Mac Pro

The Mac Pro appeared in the 2024 reported roadmap, but the report did not set a firm launch date or confirm a specific M4 configuration. Do not treat an M4 Mac Pro, M4 Ultra or other speculative chip name as an announced product on the strength of that report. For professional buyers, the more useful questions are whether the system supports required PCIe cards, software certifications, expansion and sustained workloads—and whether a Mac Studio can meet those needs.

Should you buy an M4 Mac or choose a current M5 model?

As of Apple’s March 2026 announcements, the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro generations had advanced to M5 and M5 Pro/M5 Max respectively. Apple’s Mac store lists product categories, but prices and available configurations can change; compare the exact machine at checkout rather than treating a base price as a like-for-like comparison. These criteria help separate the chip-generation question from the actual purchase.

  • Consider M4 if a discounted or refurbished machine is meaningfully cheaper, has enough memory and storage for the years you expect to keep it, and meets your workload. It can also be a sensible upgrade from an older Intel or M1 Mac without paying for the newest generation.
  • Prefer M5 where the price gap is modest if you want the current Air or Pro, expect a long ownership period, or value the newer generation and its potential resale runway. Do not assume the chip alone guarantees a specific speed-up in your applications.
  • Choose a notebook for portability when you need a screen, battery and computer in one device. For lighter workloads, compare the Air; for sustained professional work, display or port requirements, assess the Pro configuration.
  • Choose a desktop based on the whole setup: Mac mini can offer strong value if you already own peripherals; iMac bundles the display and computer; Studio is for workloads that exploit its additional performance, memory or connectivity.
  • Consider Apple Certified Refurbished if M4 pricing is attractive and the available configuration fits. Apple’s refurbished inventory is variable; at the time of the cited 2026 store page, some M4 MacBook Air inventory was listed. Review the unit’s warranty and return terms and verify stock and specifications before ordering. Apple’s refurbished Mac store

For a broader check of Apple’s current product categories, see its Mac newsroom and Mac store; availability, configurations and prices are time-sensitive. A discounted M4 with adequate memory may beat a newer base model for a particular buyer, while insufficient storage or memory can make the cheaper purchase a false economy.

What the 2024 headline gets right—and wrong today

The April 2024 report was a real, standalone roadmap story, and its central prediction—that Apple would move much of the Mac range to M4-family systems over the following product cycle—was substantially borne out. It was not an official commitment, a simultaneous launch plan, or proof that each Mac would use a chip named M4. The Mac Studio’s M3 Ultra option and the later move to M5 in key notebook lines show why that distinction matters.

Read “starting later this year” in its original context: it meant late 2024. In 2026, the useful question is not whether to wait for that reported M4 rollout, but whether a specific M4 configuration is a better buy than current hardware at its actual price.
