Apple’s Reported HomeView Hub: Two Designs, but No Confirmed $299 Price

Apple had not confirmed HomeView, its price or its release date in information available before the company’s reported October 13, 2026 event. Reports described two designs—a countertop hub and a wall-mounted model—but the claim that each would cost $299 is unverified. Apple’s documented US$299 product is the second-generation HomePod, not HomeView.

What is Apple HomeView?

HomeView is the reported name for a planned Apple smart-home hub, code-named J490, described in reporting about Apple’s home strategy. Apple had not officially announced the product by the time those reports were published, so its name, features and specifications were not confirmed. Bloomberg’s report described a planned hub at the center of Apple’s smart-home push.

Apple already supports home hubs through HomePod, HomePod mini and Apple TV. A hub enables features including remote control of accessories, shared control and automations. Apple says HomePod and HomePod mini become hubs automatically when set up; Apple TV becomes one when added to a room in the Home app. Apple’s home hub setup guidance explains the current options.

What are the two reported designs?

Reports attributed to Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman describe two forms, with differences focused on placement and design rather than confirmed performance. MacRumors reported a countertop model with a metal speaker base and a wall-mounted model with a flat, square base. The countertop model was said to come in four colors, and the wall-mounted version in two. These remain reported details, not Apple-confirmed specifications. MacRumors’ report on the two designs attributes them to Gurman.

Wall-mounted Flat, square base Two

A separate report described a 6-inch square display and an A18 chip. Those specifications, like the reported designs, were not confirmed by Apple. MacRumors’ earlier report also estimated availability around mid-November; that is an estimate, not a confirmed shipping date.

Does HomeView really cost $299?

No HomeView price was confirmed in the pre-announcement reports. The US$299 figure belongs to Apple’s second-generation HomePod: Apple’s January 2023 newsroom announcement listed that speaker at US$299. It is an existing product that can act as a home hub, not a HomeView model. Apple’s HomePod announcement gives the historical price. Do not treat it as evidence that either reported HomeView design will cost the same.

What might HomeView do with Apple Home and Matter?

Reports characterized the planned device as voice-first, with touch input and a limited selection of Apple apps, but without a dedicated App Store. Apple had not confirmed those details. The report describing the interface should therefore be read as coverage of a planned product, not a final feature list.

Apple’s existing Home ecosystem already supports Matter accessories. Apple says a home hub is required to add Matter accessories to the Home app. Thread-enabled Matter accessories additionally need a Thread-enabled home hub or a supported third-party border router. Apple’s Matter setup guidance covers these requirements. Matter is intended to let compatible smart-home accessories work across platforms, while Thread is a low-power, IP-based mesh networking technology, as described in Apple’s Matter documentation.

What can you use as an Apple home hub now?

You do not need to wait for HomeView to use Apple Home remotely or run automations. Apple documents HomePod, HomePod mini and Apple TV as current home hub options. HomePod models become hubs automatically after setup; Apple TV becomes a hub when added to a room in Home. For Matter accessories, the hub requirement and the extra Thread requirement still apply where relevant. Apple’s setup instructions explain how to configure an existing hub.

What is confirmed—and what remains uncertain?

As of the pre-announcement reporting available before Apple’s reported October 13, 2026 event, the two HomeView designs, reported 6-inch display, A18 chip, app approach and mid-November timing were all attributed reporting. Apple had not confirmed HomeView’s final name, specifications, price or availability. The practical distinction is clear: Apple’s existing home hubs and Matter requirements are documented, while HomeView details—and especially the $299 claim—were not yet official.
