Short answer: “Proxima” was the reported 2024 codename for Apple’s in-house Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth effort. Apple publicly introduced the N1 wireless chip with the iPhone 17 in September 2025. N1 brings Wi‑Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 and Thread to supported devices, but it is client-side connectivity silicon—not a standalone router, mesh system or confirmed AirPort revival.

What Apple’s Proxima project was reported to be

In December 2024, Bloomberg reported that Apple was developing a combined Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth chip under the internal codename Proxima. The report said Apple had worked on the project for several years and intended to replace some Broadcom-supplied connectivity components. It attributed planned fabrication to TSMC and described goals including tighter integration and improved power efficiency. Those details came from unnamed sources, not from an Apple product announcement.

The same report identified refreshed Apple TV and HomePod mini devices as planned early products for 2025 and separated the wireless project from Apple’s cellular-modem program. Read the original report at Bloomberg Law. A later report about references in iOS code also linked “Proxima” with prospective Apple TV and HomePod mini hardware, but code references do not confirm a product launch or final specifications (MacRumors).

What Apple actually launched: the N1 chip

Apple publicly announced the N1 wireless networking chip alongside the iPhone 17 in September 2025. Apple says N1 supports:

Apple’s iPhone 17 announcement describes the feature improvements, while the iPhone 17 specifications list Wi‑Fi 7 with 2×2 MIMO, Bluetooth 6 and Thread. Apple’s support documentation also records the N1-related wireless capabilities (Apple Support).

Apple has not publicly stated that “Proxima” is the name of N1. The timing, purpose and reported feature set make it reasonable to describe N1 as the public product that appears to correspond to the reported Proxima project, but that relationship remains an inference rather than an Apple-confirmed naming history.

What N1 changes for home networking

It improves the device, not the household router

N1 is a wireless client chip inside an Apple product. A Wi‑Fi 7-capable iPhone can use Wi‑Fi 7 features when connected to a compatible Wi‑Fi 7 router, but the phone does not create Wi‑Fi coverage, route traffic or replace a mesh system. The home network still depends on a separate router or gateway.

Older routers remain compatible with the iPhone 17. Wi‑Fi 7 is not required for ordinary internet access, and N1 cannot automatically double your internet speed. Actual throughput depends on the router, channel width, interference, distance, regional spectrum rules, client configuration and broadband service. Apple lists 2×2 MIMO for the iPhone 17, so “Wi‑Fi 7” should not be treated as a promise of every capability or theoretical rate offered by high-end routers.

  • Dual band router upgrades to 1200 Mbps high speed internet (300mbps for 2.4GHz plus 900Mbps for 5GHz), reducing buffering and ideal for 4K stream
  • Full Gigabit Ports - Gigabit Router with 4 Gigabit LAN ports, ideal for any internet plan and allow you to directly connect your wired devices
  • Boosted Coverage - Four external antennas equipped with Beamforming technology extend and concentrate the Wi-Fi signals
  • MU-MIMO technology - (5GHz band) allows high speeds for multiple devices simultaneously
  • Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home

Thread is separate from Wi‑Fi

Thread is a low-power mesh protocol for compatible smart-home devices. It is not another Wi‑Fi band and does not replace Wi‑Fi for phones, computers or streaming. Matter accessories can use Thread, Wi‑Fi or Ethernet depending on the product.

Apple’s Matter guidance identifies HomePod, HomePod mini and Apple TV as possible Thread Border Routers. A Border Router connects a Thread mesh to the home’s IP network, such as Wi‑Fi or Ethernet; see Apple’s Matter and Thread guidance. N1 in an iPhone does not make the phone a permanent Thread Border Router or turn it into a home hub.

Bluetooth 6 benefits require compatible accessories

Bluetooth 6 support matters only when the accessory and operating system use the relevant features. Existing Bluetooth products continue to work, but they cannot gain capabilities they do not implement.

Does Proxima mean Apple is bringing back AirPort?

No confirmed evidence supports that conclusion. Apple discontinued the AirPort line in 2018 (background). Reports about a custom wireless chip prompted speculation that an Apple TV or HomePod might eventually provide access-point functionality, but speculation is not a product announcement.

A chip capable of advanced wireless communication would not, by itself, make a device a router. A router also needs suitable antennas and radio design, Ethernet switching, routing and firewall software, security maintenance, regulatory approvals, support infrastructure and a business strategy. Nothing in Apple’s N1 announcement establishes a new AirPort router or says that a current Apple TV or HomePod can replace a modern mesh system.

Why Apple would build its own wireless silicon

Bloomberg’s report described several strategic motivations: reducing reliance on Broadcom for combined Wi‑Fi/Bluetooth components, integrating wireless behavior more tightly with Apple processors and operating systems, improving power management, and controlling the product roadmap across phones, wearables and home devices. These were reported objectives, not published benchmark results.

Apple has claimed better Personal Hotspot and AirDrop performance and reliability for N1, but it has not published a detailed comparison with the Broadcom components it replaced. The practical significance is therefore stronger control of device connectivity and smart-home integration, rather than a guaranteed speed increase in every home.

Should you change your equipment?

If you are buying an iPhone 17 or iPhone Air

N1 is a useful part of the platform if you already want the phone’s other features or use Wi‑Fi 7, Bluetooth 6 or Thread accessories. It is a weak reason to upgrade by itself when your bottleneck is slow broadband, poor router placement or weak coverage.

If you are considering a Wi‑Fi 7 router

Evaluate the network as a complete system, not just the wireless standard:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Coverage and placement: A well-placed Wi‑Fi 6 system can outperform a poorly placed Wi‑Fi 7 router.
  2. Ethernet: Check for multi-gigabit ports if your broadband or local transfers exceed 1Gbps.
  3. 6GHz availability: Support and permitted channels vary by region.
  4. Mesh backhaul: Wired Ethernet backhaul is generally preferable where practical.
  5. Security and management: Check update policies, parental controls, device management and any subscription requirement.
  6. Smart-home support: Matter and Thread support may matter more than peak Wi‑Fi rates for a connected home.
  7. ISP compatibility: Confirm bridge mode, gateway compatibility and whether double NAT can be avoided.
  8. Total cost: Include extra mesh nodes and recurring fees, not just the main router.

Vendor product pages for comparison include eero, NETGEAR and TP-Link. Prices, stock and subscription terms change by region and should be checked directly before purchase.

If your priority is HomeKit, Matter or Thread

Focus on hub placement, Thread coverage, accessory compatibility and reliable Ethernet or Wi‑Fi backhaul. A supported HomePod, HomePod mini or Apple TV can serve as a home hub and, where applicable, a Thread Border Router; an N1-equipped iPhone alone cannot provide that role.

The bottom line on Proxima and N1

Apple’s reported Proxima effort became visible publicly as N1, the company’s own wireless chip in the iPhone 17 generation and iPhone Air. It gives Apple more control over Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth and Thread integration and may support a broader device ecosystem over time. It does not constitute an Apple router, does not guarantee faster household internet and does not confirm an AirPort comeback.
