At his first major Apple event as CEO, John Ternus used a calm voice, a maroon sweater and one pointed sentence to make rival foldables sound inelegant—without naming a single competitor.
A quiet debut, followed by a very deliberate jab
John Ternus became Apple’s chief executive officer on September 1, 2026, succeeding Tim Cook, who moved into the executive-chairman role. Apple said its board approved the transition unanimously after a long-term succession process. Ternus had spent more than two decades at Apple, most recently as senior vice president of Hardware Engineering.

His first major public appearance as CEO came at Apple’s September 9, 2026, “Surprise and Shine” event. The Guardian described him as warm and unpretentious; he wore a dark maroon crew-neck sweater and black jeans. He opened with a statement of stewardship rather than a sales pitch: “I want to take a moment to express what an extraordinary privilege it is to represent the remarkable teams here at Apple. I’ve spent much of my life at this company, and I continue to be inspired every single day by the curiosity, invention and relentless pursuit of excellence that define Apple.”
Later, after teasing the audience with “Actually, there is one more thing …”, he held up Apple’s first foldable iPhone and said, “this is iPhone Duo.”

The line that made the competition look awkward
Ternus’s central criticism was concise: “others have created foldables that just feel like two phones awkwardly stuck together.” He argued that this approach produces a square screen that is poorly suited to common use, compromises vertical scrolling and leaves films surrounded by oversized black bars.
He did not name Samsung or any other company. That omission is the technique’s most important part. By describing a category-level design outcome, Ternus avoided a personal or corporate attack while inviting the audience to supply its own examples. He then moved immediately from the flaw to Apple’s proposed answer: “a larger display that feels as natural and intuitive as iPad,” combining “thoughtful design with breakthrough engineering in a way only Apple can.”
The result is a polished form of competitive advertising. The sentence identifies a user-experience problem, not an opponent’s motives, and the next sentence gives Apple ownership of the solution. It sounds dismissive, but remains centered on screens, software and ergonomics rather than personalities.

MobileSyrup reported these headline specifications and launch details for the iPhone Duo:
| Feature | Reported detail |
|---|---|
| Outer display | 5.4 inches |
| Inner display | 7.6 inches |
| Frame | Grade-five titanium |
| Front-display protection | Ceramic Shield 2 |
| Announced launch date | October 23, 2026 |
Those are reported hardware details, while the claim that the open screen feels as natural as an iPad is Apple’s positioning. The practical test for buyers will be whether the proportions, hinge behavior, software layout and video presentation solve the compromises Ternus described.
Price and launch timing depend on the configuration
The pricing reports are not identical. MobileSyrup reported an announced price of $2,999, while CNN reported a least-expensive configuration at $1,999 and higher configurations above $3,000. The safest reading is that the Duo spans multiple configurations; there is no single price that represents every version.

Apple announced October 23 as the launch date. That timing places the product years after the first major foldable phones from rival manufacturers, rather than making Apple an early entrant.
Samsung reached the category first
CNN described Samsung as the current leader in a foldable-phone market that remains niche but is growing. MobileSyrup’s timeline places Samsung’s Galaxy Fold launch in September 2019, Motorola’s foldable Razr in early 2020 and Google’s Pixel Fold in June 2023.
Samsung Mobile US responded to Apple’s launch-day positioning on social media with: “Let us know when you’re done reheating our leftovers 😉” The exchange shows two distinct strategies: Apple presented its design as a more coherent interpretation of the category, while Samsung emphasized that it had already shipped foldables for years.

Why Apple waited is still an open question
The public announcements do not establish an internal reason for Apple’s delay. The documented timeline shows that competitors had several generations of foldables in market before Apple introduced the Duo. Ternus’s remarks indicate how Apple wants that delay interpreted: not as lateness, but as time spent pursuing a more natural display experience and what he called breakthrough engineering.
That is a marketing argument, not independent proof that the Duo is more durable, easier to use or better for media than every competing model. Those judgments require hands-on comparisons that are not established by the launch statements alone.

The broader strategy under Ternus
Ternus inherits a company that Apple says grew from approximately $350 billion in market capitalization when Tim Cook became CEO to $4 trillion in 2026. Apple also reported that annual revenue rose from $108 billion in fiscal 2011 to more than $416 billion in fiscal 2025, its active installed base exceeded 2.5 billion devices and Services became a business generating more than $100 billion.
Cook described Ternus as having “the mind of an engineer, the soul of an innovator, and the heart to lead with integrity and with honor.” The Duo presentation offered an early example of how that engineering background may shape Apple’s public voice: criticize a visible product trade-off, avoid naming a rival and connect the criticism directly to a design principle.
The event also tied the foldable to Apple’s wider software direction. CNN reported that Ternus framed Apple’s artificial-intelligence strategy around a personal intelligent hub that combines information across Apple devices with an AI-enhanced Siri. That ecosystem angle may matter as much as the hinge or screen: Apple is presenting the Duo not merely as a new form factor, but as another node in a connected hardware and software system.
Quick Recap
What readers should take from the exchange
- The insult was aimed at an experience. Ternus criticized square proportions, scrolling and black bars rather than naming a company.
- The pivot was immediate. Apple followed the criticism with its own promise of an iPad-like larger display.
- The competitive history is clear. Samsung, Motorola and Google shipped foldables before Apple.
- The price needs attribution. Reports identify a $1,999 entry configuration, a $2,999 announced price and higher versions above $3,000.
- The “better” claim remains Apple’s claim. The launch established the product’s positioning, not an independent verdict against every rival foldable.
