Apple’s current checkout for iPhone 17 models shows estimated Apple Trade In credit of $35 to $885, while Apple’s October 2026 iPhone Duo announcement cites $175 to $885 for eligible iPhone 13 or newer devices. Carrier promotions can advertise as much as $1,200 for qualifying trade-ins, but the headline amount comes with plan, financing and eligibility requirements.
How much is your old iPhone worth?
The only reliable starting point is a device-specific estimate. Apple calculates its credit from the model, storage, condition and other eligibility checks shown during checkout. The published ranges are examples, not guaranteed payouts for every phone.

| Offer | Published value | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Apple Trade In at current iPhone 17 checkout | $35–$885 | Estimate varies by model and condition; applied toward a new iPhone. |
| Apple’s October 2026 iPhone Duo announcement | $175–$885 | For eligible iPhone 13 or newer devices; model and condition dependent. |
| Carrier deals promoted directly through Apple | Up to $1,200 | Apple cites this maximum for trading in an iPhone 14 Pro Max or higher; qualifying carrier terms apply. |
Apple’s announcement describes the $175–$885 range as an instant credit for an eligible iPhone 13 or higher. The separate $1,200 figure is a carrier-promotion maximum, not the standard Apple Trade In value and not a guaranteed payment for every iPhone 14 Pro Max.

Apple credit versus a carrier promotion
A larger advertised number does not automatically mean a cheaper upgrade. Compare the complete transaction rather than just the trade-in headline.
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
Apple’s direct purchase
- Apple gives a device-specific estimate at checkout and applies the credit toward the new iPhone.
- Buying directly from Apple generally provides an unlocked phone, making it easier to change providers.
- Apple’s standard financing term is 24 months, so calculate the total financed cost over that period.
Carrier bill credits
- Carrier promotions may exceed Apple’s instant credit, particularly during limited-time upgrade events.
- The advertised value is commonly delivered as monthly bill credits over a financing term that often lasts 36 months.
- Eligibility can require a particular unlimited plan, a new line, an upgrade, a specific trade-in model or continued service for the full term.
- Leaving early, changing to an ineligible plan or paying off the phone can stop future credits, leaving you responsible for the remaining balance.
Consumer Reports advises checking carrier deals because limited-time promotions can beat Apple’s offer. Its comparison also highlights the trade-off: a carrier purchase may tie you to the provider until the financed balance and promotional credits are settled, whereas a direct Apple purchase is typically unlocked.
How to choose the cheaper offer
- Request Apple’s estimate. Select your iPhone model and condition in Apple’s trade-in flow or during checkout, and save the quoted credit.
- Record the carrier’s full terms. Write down the required plan, financing length, trade-in tier, monthly bill credit, taxes, activation charges and any new-line requirement.
- Calculate total cost. Compare the phone price after Apple’s immediate credit with the carrier’s total monthly payments minus all credits over the complete term.
- Price the cost of leaving. If you might switch providers, include the unpaid device balance and any credits you would forfeit. A nominally larger carrier offer can cost more if you leave before the term ends.
- Choose flexibility deliberately. Take the carrier deal only if its plan and service commitment fit your expected time with that provider. Otherwise, the lower instant credit from Apple may be worth the unlocked ownership and shorter financing period.
Can you get the carrier’s $1,200 offer at an Apple Store?
Apple’s October 2026 announcement presents carrier deals as offers available directly from Apple, but the $1,200 amount is conditional. It applies to qualifying promotions and an eligible iPhone 14 Pro Max or higher, with carrier-specific requirements. Ask Apple or the carrier to confirm the exact promotion, plan, trade-in condition rules and credit schedule for your account. Do not assume that every Apple Store, model, region or purchase date qualifies for the maximum.

Do you have to pay off your phone before switching?
That depends on who financed the device and the carrier’s rules. A carrier can require the remaining device balance before unlocking or transferring service, and promotional bill credits may stop when you leave an eligible plan. Before switching, request the payoff amount in writing and ask what happens to all future credits. An iPhone bought directly from Apple is generally unlocked, so it avoids that particular carrier-lock-in issue, although your new provider’s compatibility and activation requirements still apply.

- Document shipment. Photograph the phone’s condition and keep the tracking receipt until the final credit is confirmed.
A condition change discovered after inspection can reduce the final value or invalidate a promotion, so describe cracks, battery issues, missing parts and repairs accurately when requesting the estimate.

A 2019 ecoATM Gazelle survey found that 80% of consumers had never traded in a mobile phone. That historical figure should not be read as a current 2026 national rate, but it illustrates the awareness gap: people often upgrade without checking what their old phone could offset. The same release reported phone selling prices rising 9.0% year over year and 27% of respondents planning a hardware upgrade before the holidays in that survey period.

If Apple’s estimate is low, obtain a current quote from a reputable recommerce service before recycling. Compare its condition rules, shipping process, payment timing and any return obligations; never assume a third-party quote is higher without checking those terms.
