It is already integrated with iOS, works without granting a third-party extension Full Access, and handles secure fields where iOS excludes custom keyboards. Switch to Gboard or Microsoft SwiftKey when a specific feature—such as Glide typing, search, toolbar shortcuts, personalization, or a language layout—solves a problem Apple’s keyboard does not.
The important trade-off is not a simple “Apple is private, third parties are unsafe” divide. iOS normally runs a custom keyboard in a network-blocked sandbox. Full Access is an optional capability grant that can enable network use and other advanced functions; it is not, by itself, proof that every keystroke is uploaded. The right choice depends on the feature you need, the keyboard’s current privacy disclosure, how much iOS integration you value, and whether you are comfortable reviewing its permissions.

Apple keyboard or a third-party keyboard?
There is no reliable basis for declaring one iPhone keyboard universally faster, more accurate, or more reliable. No independent performance test establishes such a ranking here. A better decision is to match the keyboard to your actual requirement.

How custom keyboards work on iPhone
They are iOS extensions, not replacements for every text field
Apple describes third-party keyboards as extensions that a user enables for system use. They can appear in ordinary text fields across apps, but iOS excludes them from passcode input and secure text views. When an app elects to block custom keyboards, the system keyboard is used instead. This behavior is a platform rule, not a fault in Gboard or SwiftKey.
The default sandbox blocks network access
Apple Platform Security, published December 19, 2024, says a custom keyboard runs by default in a restrictive sandbox. The sandbox blocks network access and APIs that could exfiltrate typing data. Apple’s developer documentation describes the same boundary: without Open Access, a keyboard cannot use the expanded capabilities associated with network communication, shared-container access, or server-side processing of keystrokes and input events.
Apple also says that when Open Access is not enabled—or when Full Access is disabled—the user knows keystrokes go only to the app currently using the keyboard. Read that statement narrowly. It describes the operating system’s restriction on a non-networked keyboard; it is not a blanket guarantee about what an extension may do after you grant expanded access.
Open Access and “Allow Full Access” are the permission decision
A developer may request Open Access for advanced functions. You must opt in through the iPhone setting labelled Allow Full Access. Depending on the keyboard, that access can permit network use, a shared container with the parent app, server-side processing, or other capabilities documented by the developer. You can withdraw the permission later in Settings.
What Apple’s built-in keyboard does well
It is the lowest-friction default
Apple’s keyboard is already part of iOS. There is no extension to install, no separate keyboard app to maintain, and no third-party Full Access decision before you type. It is also the keyboard iOS can use in passcode fields, secure text views, and apps that disallow custom keyboards.
QuickType suggestions have a specific on-device claim
Apple’s privacy features documentation states that “Siri Suggestions in the QuickType keyboard are made possible by an Apple-developed neural network language process that also runs directly on your device.” The scope matters: this is Apple’s statement about the Siri Suggestions feature and its language process. It should not be generalized into a claim that every keyboard-related process or every Apple feature is handled identically.

iOS 26 expanded built-in language support
Apple’s feature document for the September 2025 iOS 26 release lists several keyboard changes that may remove the need for an alternative keyboard:
Recommended Free Tools
- Arabic Multiscript Keyboard: type Arabic and English in the same sentence.
- Arabic Transliteration Keyboard: enter phonetic English input and convert it to Arabic.
- Thai: a new layout with word suggestions.
- Māori and New Zealand layouts: changes that make long vowels easier to enter.
If language or layout support is your reason for switching, check these iOS 26 options first. A third-party keyboard may still offer a workflow you prefer, but the built-in keyboard now covers more cases than older comparisons suggest.
Its limitation is specialization, not basic availability
Apple’s keyboard is not designed to provide every toolbar, search integration, or personalization system offered by a dedicated keyboard app. If you need one of those functions, the practical question is whether that single benefit justifies installing an extension and reviewing its permissions.
What Gboard adds
Documented typing tools
Google’s Gboard setup documentation for iPhone and iPad lists Glide typing, autocorrection, character preview, and language selection. Glide typing lets you move across letters rather than tapping each one; whether you personally prefer it is a matter for your own use, not a proven speed advantage.
Optional Google Search inside the keyboard
Gboard can provide a Google Search feature from its keyboard toolbar. Google says this feature requires Full Access. Google also says searches are sent to Google when Search is used and that nothing else is shared. That statement is specific to the documented Search behavior; do not treat it as a general description of every Gboard process or every future feature.
What enabling it means
You can install and use a custom keyboard under iOS’s restricted model, then decide separately whether to enable Allow Full Access. If you want Gboard Search, the permission is part of that feature’s documented requirements. If you do not need Search, leaving Full Access off preserves the stricter operating-system boundary, while some keyboard functions may remain unavailable.

What SwiftKey adds
Swipe, tap, toolbar, and personalization workflows
Microsoft SwiftKey’s current US App Store listing describes swipe typing, tap-to-type, toolbar shortcuts, and personalization. Those features target users who want a keyboard workspace with shortcuts and customization rather than only a replacement for Apple’s letter layout.
Read the App Store privacy label carefully
The listing’s developer-supplied privacy information says the app may collect categories including contact information and identifiers linked to a user. It also lists user content, usage data, and diagnostics as data not linked to a user. Apple states that this privacy information has not been verified by Apple. Treat it as the developer’s current disclosure, not as an independent audit or a permanent guarantee.
Do not transfer desktop or Android assumptions to iPhone
Microsoft has a separate SwiftKey permissions help page discussing network access for downloading language models and optional cloud services, as well as microphone access for voice typing. That page is general SwiftKey support information and does not establish the exact permission behavior of the iPhone app. Use the iPhone app’s current listing and the iOS Settings screen for an iPhone-specific decision.

Is allowing Full Access safe?
“Full Access” describes what the extension is allowed to do; it does not, on its own, tell you what the developer actually does with every input. Evaluate the requested capability and the app’s current disclosure together.
| Permission state | What iOS documents | Practical implication |
|---|---|---|
| Custom keyboard installed, Full Access off | The extension remains in the restrictive sandbox; Apple says network access and exfiltration APIs are blocked | Use this state when the keyboard’s basic typing feature is enough |
| Full Access on | Open Access may allow network use, shared-container access, server-side processing, and other advanced functions | Enable only when a feature you want requires it, then review the developer’s disclosure |
| Built-in Apple keyboard | Not an optional third-party keyboard extension | No third-party Full Access prompt; iOS can use it in secure fields and blocked-app contexts |
Apple’s review rules are safeguards, not proof of individual behavior
Apple’s App Review Guidelines require keyboard extensions to function without Full Access and limit collection to activity that improves the keyboard extension on-device. Those are rules for developers and reviewers. They do not independently confirm that a particular app’s implementation, disclosure, or future update matches the ideal described by the rule.
A sensible privacy check before enabling access
- Identify the exact feature you want. If it is ordinary typing, test with Full Access disabled first.
- Read the keyboard’s current App Store privacy section and the developer’s support explanation.
- Consider whether network search, cloud synchronization, language downloads, or voice features justify expanded access.
- Enable Allow Full Access only if the benefit is clear, then turn it off again if you stop using that feature.
- Remember that passcodes and secure text views still use the system keyboard or another path selected by iOS.
How to install, switch, and remove a keyboard
- Install the keyboard app from the App Store.
- Open Settings > General > Keyboard > Keyboards.
- Tap Add New Keyboard, choose the installed keyboard, and confirm it appears in the list.
- To type with it, open a normal text field and tap the globe or keyboard key until the desired keyboard appears. Some iOS versions let you press and hold that key to select directly.
- To change the order, return to the Keyboards list and use Edit, then drag the keyboard into the preferred position.
- To review expanded permissions, select the keyboard in the same list and inspect Allow Full Access. Leave it off unless the feature you need requires it.
- To remove the extension, use Edit in the keyboard list and delete it, or uninstall its app.
After setup, test the keyboard in the apps where you actually write: a message, a browser form, a notes field, and any language-specific field you use. Then test a passcode or secure login field so you know when iOS will switch back to the system keyboard.

Which keyboard fits your situation?
Choose Apple first if integration and a narrow default boundary matter most
Stay with Apple when you want the fewest moving parts, do not need in-keyboard search or a specialized toolbar, or regularly enter passwords and other sensitive text. It is also the rational first choice if iOS 26 already supplies the Arabic, Thai, Māori, or New Zealand layout you need.
Try Gboard if Glide typing or search is the decisive feature
Gboard is worth testing when its documented Glide typing, language selection, character preview, autocorrection, or Google Search addresses a concrete frustration. Decide separately whether Search is worth enabling Full Access, because Google documents that requirement and the associated transmission of searches.
Try SwiftKey if its toolbar and personalization match your workflow
SwiftKey is a candidate when swipe and tap entry, toolbar shortcuts, or personalization are more important to you than keeping the default Apple experience. Read its current US App Store listing and privacy disclosure, remembering that Apple labels the disclosure as developer supplied and unverified.
Use a hybrid approach when no single keyboard wins everywhere
iOS lets you keep multiple keyboards installed. You can use a third-party keyboard in ordinary text fields, switch to Apple for a particular language or app, and expect iOS to use the system keyboard in secure fields. This avoids treating the choice as permanent.
Common surprises and how to handle them
“My keyboard disappears in a password field”
That is expected platform behavior. Apple says custom keyboards do not appear in passcode inputs or secure text views, and an app can block them elsewhere. Use the system keyboard in that field.

Check whether the feature requires Allow Full Access. Gboard’s documented Search feature does. Other apps may impose their own requirements, so consult the current listing and in-app explanation rather than assuming every toolbar feature has the same permission model.
Best Value
“I changed keyboards and now the language is wrong”
Open Settings > General > Keyboard > Keyboards and verify that the required language is installed for the keyboard you selected. Gboard documents language selection, while Apple’s iOS 26 release adds specific built-in language layouts. Switching with the globe key changes the active keyboard, not necessarily the language model inside that keyboard.
“I want to reduce exposure after trying one”
Turn off Allow Full Access in the keyboard’s Settings entry, remove the keyboard from the Keyboards list, or uninstall its app. If you keep it installed without Full Access, its behavior returns to the more restrictive iOS model described by Apple, although features that depend on expanded access may stop working.
What the evidence cannot tell you
There is no named statistic in the available primary documentation showing that Apple, Gboard, or SwiftKey has the highest accuracy, lowest latency, or greatest reliability. App Store feature lists and platform security documentation establish capabilities and constraints, not a universal performance winner. Your own typing patterns, languages, and preferred gestures determine which keyboard feels better.
Likewise, a permission switch is not a privacy score. Apple’s sandbox rules explain the default boundary; Google explains what happens to searches when its Search feature is used; SwiftKey’s listing provides a developer disclosure with Apple’s verification caveat. Those statements should be read separately and checked again after updates.
Bottom line
Use Apple’s keyboard unless a third-party keyboard solves a specific problem you actually have. It offers the strongest default integration, remains available in secure and blocked contexts, and gained useful language features in iOS 26. Choose Gboard for its documented Glide typing or optional Search, or SwiftKey for its swipe/tap workflow, toolbar, and personalization. Install only what you need, leave Full Access off unless a desired feature requires it, and revisit the app’s current disclosure whenever it updates.
