September 2026 reports describe four-speaker support appearing in beta software, but the public-release status, compatible models and final behavior remain unconfirmed. If you’re setting up a system now, follow Apple’s one-speaker or stereo-pair instructions rather than buying extra HomePods for the reported upgrade.
What the reported HomePod upgrade changes
Apple’s published HomePod with Apple TV 4K guide describes a home-theater setup with one HomePod or two HomePods configured as a stereo pair. Reports from September 2026 point to a possible expansion to four speaker positions, but those reports concern beta software and do not establish that the feature is available to everyone.

| Models and compatibility | Apple’s guide covers HomePod and HomePod mini, with mini’s audio limitations noted below. | 9to5Mac’s September 23, 2026 report showed two full-size HomePods and two minis in a beta configuration; final supported models are not established. |
| Audio behavior | Apple lists Dolby Atmos, Dolby Digital 7.1 and Dolby Digital 5.1 for video content. Mini renders those formats in mono or stereo. | 9to5Mac reported Atmos and surround from video sources in the beta; menu and game audio played through the front speakers. |
MacRumors reported that audioOS 27 beta code indicated four speaker positions and a possible Party Mode, while the Home app and Apple TV then lacked a way to configure four HomePods as surround speakers (MacRumors, September 4, 2026). Later, 9to5Mac reported a four-HomePod configuration in tvOS 27.2 beta (9to5Mac, September 23, 2026). These are reports about beta behavior, not an Apple announcement or a guarantee of final functionality.

Can you use four HomePods for Apple TV surround sound now?
Apple’s current setup guide does not document a four-HomePod arrangement. The beta reports are not enough to treat it as a released feature: they do not establish a public release date, final supported HomePod generations or the setup process for a final version. Check Apple’s guide and release notes for confirmation before changing your system.

Does HomePod mini work as a rear surround speaker?
Apple says HomePod mini renders Dolby Atmos, Dolby Digital 7.1 and Dolby Digital 5.1 content in mono or stereo. Its setup support page is explicit: “HomePod mini doesn’t support Dolby Atmos 5.1 or 7.1 surround sound.” (Apple Support, setup requirements and limitations.)

- Premium, immersive, high-fidelity audio
Although 9to5Mac reported two minis shown in the four-speaker beta configuration, that observation does not override Apple’s documented limitation or establish final mini compatibility. Apple has not confirmed the released behavior in the sources available here.
