Apple’s reported bill in Masimo’s Apple Watch patent case has grown from a jury award of $634,313,913 to about $818 million after a judge added roughly $184 million in prejudgment interest. Post-judgment interest continues to accrue until the judgment is paid. The update concerns damages for past sales; it does not change features on current Apple Watch models or reinstate an import ban.
How much does Apple owe Masimo now?
The jury awarded Masimo $634,313,913 in November 2025. The U.S. District Court for the Central District of California’s July 20, 2026 final judgment preserved that damages award. On October 6, 2026, MacRumors reported that U.S. District Judge James V. Selna ordered Apple to pay another $184 million in prejudgment interest, putting the reported total at about $818 million before post-judgment interest. The $184 million and $818 million figures are rounded figures reported by MacRumors; the judgment’s exact damages figure is $634,313,913. MacRumors’ October 6 report and the July 2026 final judgment document those respective figures.

Why was prejudgment interest added?
Prejudgment interest accounts for the time between the infringement period and the judgment, when a patent owner would otherwise have received royalty payments. MacRumors reported that Selna rejected Apple’s argument that the interest would give Masimo a windfall, saying that “interest from the time that the royalty payments would have been received merely serves to make the patent owner whole.”
MacRumors also reported that the judge declined Masimo’s request for a 7% rate and instead used Masimo’s borrowing rate, compounded annually from the start of infringement. The primary interest order is not available among the cited materials, so the rate and calculation details are attributed to MacRumors rather than presented as independently confirmed from the order.

What patent did the damages case involve?
The jury found Apple infringed claims 11–14 of Masimo U.S. Patent No. 10,433,776. In its July 2026 final judgment, the court said the infringement was not willful and that the asserted claims were not invalid. The court’s final judgment sets out the exact damages and those findings.
Bloomberg Law separately reported that the July judgment followed Apple’s unsuccessful efforts to overturn or reduce the jury verdict. The damages award is therefore a judgment for past infringement, not a ruling that a new Apple Watch feature must be removed.

Is this the Apple Watch blood-oxygen import dispute?
No. The damages lawsuit and the International Trade Commission (ITC) import proceeding concern different patent sets and different remedies.

Does the ruling affect current Apple Watch users?
No feature change for current users follows from this damages judgment. MacRumors reported that the patent underlying the award expired in June 2022 and said the ruling has no effect on heart-rate features in current Apple Watch models. The case is about compensation for historical sales, not a new restriction on the watches people use today.
