Apple’s AirPods translation feature has already launched. Live Translation became available with iOS 26 as an Apple Intelligence capability, but it is not built into every AirPods model and does not work independently of an iPhone. You need supported AirPods, current firmware, an Apple Intelligence-enabled iPhone running iOS 26 or later, and an available language-region combination.
What Apple actually launched
Apple introduced Live Translation with AirPods as part of its iOS 26 and Apple Intelligence rollout. It is a near-real-time conversation aid: when another person speaks a supported language, translated speech plays through your AirPods in your selected language. The iPhone’s Translate app provides the controls, transcript and spoken response.
Apple also supports Live Translation in the Phone and FaceTime apps, but those call features should not be confused with in-person conversation mode. Device, language and regional restrictions can differ between use cases. Apple’s launch announcement is available in its Newsroom coverage.
Which AirPods support Live Translation?
| AirPods model | Support | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| AirPods 4 | No | The standard model is not listed by Apple. |
| AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation | Yes | Requires current firmware and a compatible iPhone. |
| AirPods Pro 2 | Yes | Apple includes this model; Pro 3 is not required. |
| AirPods Pro 3 | Yes | Apple’s current Pro model. |
| Original AirPods Pro | Not listed | Do not assume first-generation Pro support. |
| Original AirPods Max | Not listed | Apple names AirPods Max 2 instead. |
| AirPods Max 2 | Yes | Requires current firmware and a compatible iPhone. |
Apple’s current compatibility statement is on its Live Translation support page. Reports that describe the feature as exclusive to AirPods Pro 3 are incomplete.

How a translated conversation works
One person uses AirPods
- The other person speaks.
- The iPhone and AirPods capture and process the speech.
- You hear the translated result through your AirPods.
- You speak your reply.
- The iPhone shows the translation to the other person or plays it aloud through its speaker.
The other person does not need AirPods for this arrangement.
Rank #3
- REBUILT FOR COMFORT — AirPods 4 have been redesigned for exceptional all-day comfort and greater stability. With a refined contour, shorter stem, and quick-press controls for music or calls.
- ACTIVE NOISE CANCELLATION — AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation help reduce outside noise before it reaches your ears, so you can immerse yourself in what you’re listening to.*
- HEAR THE WORLD AROUND YOU — The powerful H2 chip comes to AirPods 4. Adaptive Audio seamlessly blends ANC and Transparency mode — which lets you comfortably hear and interact with the world around you exactly as it sounds — to provide the best listening experience in any environment.* And when you’re speaking with someone nearby, Conversation Awareness automatically lowers the volume of what’s playing.*
- IMPROVED SOUND AND CALL QUALITY — Voice Isolation improves the quality of calls in loud conditions. Using advanced computational audio, it reduces background noise while isolating and clarifying the sound of your voice for whomever you’re speaking to.*

Both people use AirPods
Apple also describes a two-person mode in which each participant hears translated responses through their own supported AirPods. Both people need compatible AirPods with current firmware, compatible iPhones and Live Translation started correctly. See Apple’s AirPods user guide for that setup.
How to start Live Translation
Translate app method
- Open Translate on the iPhone.
- Tap Live.
- Select the two languages.
- Tap Start Translation.
- Listen through the AirPods while the other person speaks.
- Use the Live view to show a transcript or play your translated reply through the iPhone speaker.
- Tap X to stop.
Other launch methods
- Say, “Siri, start Live Translation.”
- Assign the iPhone Action button to open Translate.
- Press and hold both AirPods stems simultaneously on supported models.
- On AirPods Max 2, press and hold the listening-mode button.
- Start Live Translation from a supported Phone or FaceTime call while wearing the AirPods.
Controls vary by model and software version. There is no separate AirPods translation app; Apple routes the feature through Translate, Siri, system controls and call interfaces.
Rank #4
- Automatically on, automatically connected
- Easy setup for all your Apple devices
- Quick access to Siri by saying “Hey Siri”
- Double-tap to play or skip forward
- New Apple H1 headphone chip delivers faster wireless connection to your devices
What it can and cannot do
AirPods are primarily the microphones and audio output. The paired iPhone supplies the Translate interface and Apple Intelligence integration. Apple does not establish in the cited documentation that every stage is processed locally or works entirely offline, so do not treat Live Translation as guaranteed offline translation.
Speech recognition and generative translation can introduce delay or errors, particularly with background noise, overlapping speakers, rapid speech, strong accents, idioms, sarcasm, incomplete sentences, unusual names and technical vocabulary. Apple warns that generative-model output may be inaccurate or unexpected. Confirm medical, legal, immigration, emergency and other high-stakes information with text, a qualified interpreter or another reliable method.
Best Value
- Active Noise Cancellation blocks outside noise, so you can immerse yourself in music
- Transparency mode for hearing and interacting with the world around you
- Spatial audio with dynamic head tracking places sound all around you
- Adaptive EQ automatically tunes music to your ears
- Three sizes of soft, tapered silicone tips for a customizable fit
In a noisy setting, Apple says moving the iPhone closer to the speaker can let its microphones supplement the AirPods microphones.
If Live Translation does not appear
- Confirm that your exact AirPods model is listed above; AirPods 4 without ANC and the original AirPods Max are not listed.
- Update the iPhone to iOS 26 or later and install the latest AirPods firmware.
- Verify that the iPhone supports Apple Intelligence and that Apple Intelligence is enabled.
- Check the selected language and your region for availability.
- Make sure the AirPods are paired with the intended iPhone, then reconnect or restart both devices.
- Check whether the necessary language resources are available or installed.
If translation is delayed or wrong, reduce background noise, have one person speak at a time, slow down, and restate names or technical terms. Network conditions can also matter where the relevant processing path requires network access.
Do you need to buy new AirPods?
- Already own AirPods Pro 2: Update the firmware and test Live Translation before spending money; Apple lists this model as supported.
- Own AirPods 4 without ANC: This model is not included in Apple’s compatibility list.
- Have an older iPhone: New AirPods alone will not provide Apple Intelligence compatibility.
- Translate only occasionally: Try the iPhone Translate app first; it can display text or play responses through the phone speaker without a new earbud purchase.
- Travel frequently with a compatible iPhone: AirPods 4 with ANC are the lowest-cost new option listed for Live Translation, while AirPods Pro 3 adds in-ear isolation and the broader Pro feature set.
U.S. prices and buying choices
The following Apple U.S. list prices were shown on August 18, 2026; prices and availability can change.
| Model | U.S. list price | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|
| AirPods 4 | $129 | Not a Live Translation model. |
| AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation | $179 | Lowest-cost new AirPods option listed for translation; open-fit design. |
| AirPods Pro 3 | $249 | In-ear fit, stronger isolation and additional Pro features. |
| AirPods Max 2 | $549 | For buyers who specifically want over-ear headphones. |
See Apple’s AirPods comparison page for current model and price information. Buying AirPods Max 2 solely for translation is difficult to justify; its value depends on wanting the over-ear form factor as well.

Bottom line for buyers
Live Translation with AirPods is real and available now, but it is a conditional software feature rather than an independent interpreter in your earbuds. Check the iPhone first, then your AirPods model, firmware, language and region. AirPods Pro 2 owners may already have everything required; new buyers should choose AirPods 4 with ANC for the lower entry price or AirPods Pro 3 for in-ear isolation and extra features. For occasional or high-stakes translation, start with the iPhone Translate app and verify important information instead of treating automatic output as authoritative.
