Apple’s warning to selected iPhone users in 92 countries was sent on April 10, 2024. It warned that recipients may have been individually targeted by mercenary spyware; it was not an alert that a new virus had infected iPhones across those countries. If you received a similar warning, verify it through Apple’s account website, update your devices, and get expert advice before erasing anything.
What Apple’s 92-country warning actually meant
On April 10, 2024, Apple sent threat notifications to selected users in 92 countries. The company said the recipients may have been targeted in attempts to remotely compromise the iPhone associated with their Apple Account. The warning described the targeting as likely connected to the recipient’s identity, work, or activities. TechCrunch’s contemporaneous report covered the campaign.
Apple describes these alerts as high-confidence warnings that an individual may have been targeted by sophisticated mercenary spyware, while noting that it cannot provide absolute certainty. Apple did not publicly identify the attackers, a spyware family, an exploit, or whether each recipient’s device was successfully compromised. The alert is serious, but it is not proof that the phone was infected.
The 92-country figure belongs to that April 2024 campaign, not to a newly announced August 2026 outbreak. Apple’s support guidance, published August 13, 2026, says it has sent notifications multiple times per year since 2021 and has notified users in more than 150 countries in total. Those cumulative figures describe Apple’s notification history, not one attack affecting every user in those places. Apple’s current threat-notification guidance explains the distinction.

Why this was not a mass iPhone virus
A consumer malware or scam campaign can target many people with phishing messages, malicious apps, account theft, or other broadly distributed tactics. Mercenary spyware is different: it is costly, sophisticated surveillance technology supplied by private companies to government or government-linked customers and used against selected individuals.
Pegasus, associated with NSO Group, and Predator are examples discussed in investigations of commercial spyware. But Apple did not say either tool caused the 92-country warnings. A notification does not identify the spyware involved, and findings in other cases should not be generalized to every recipient. Amnesty International’s explanation of the alerts also emphasizes that the warning is not a public identification of a particular tool.

Journalists, activists, human-rights defenders, politicians, diplomats, civil-society groups, and people involved in sensitive investigations or political disputes may face greater risk because of their work, access, contacts, or public role. Fame is not a requirement for targeting. Apple says the vast majority of users will never be targeted by this category of attack.
How to verify an Apple threat notification
A genuine notification may appear on the iPhone Lock Screen, in Settings, by email to an address associated with the Apple Account, or as a banner after signing in to the Apple Account website. Apple lists [email protected] as its email sender and [email protected] for iMessage, but a sender label alone is not enough to authenticate a message.
- Open a browser yourself and type https://account.apple.com. Sign in and check for a threat notification there; do not follow a link in an email or text.
- Treat any request for your password, verification code, payment, remote access, attachment download, app installation, or configuration profile as a red flag. Apple says its threat notifications do not ask you to do these things.
- If the warning is not visible in your account, do not respond to the message or use its contact details. Reach Apple through its official support site instead.
What to do if the warning is genuine
- Stop interacting with the message. Do not tap links, open attachments, reply with codes, or install anything it recommends.
- Verify it through your Apple Account. Use the account website you entered manually, as described above.
- Update your Apple devices. Install the latest software available for each device. Apple recommends keeping devices updated as part of its response guidance.
- Turn on Lockdown Mode. It reduces exposure to certain sophisticated attacks. The steps and practical effects are below.
- Preserve the device for assessment. Do not erase or factory-reset it before speaking with a qualified incident-response specialist; the device state may contain evidence.
- Contact specialist help. Apple points recipients toward expert assistance. Access Now’s Digital Security Helpline provides free, around-the-clock support to eligible journalists, activists, human-rights defenders, and other civil-society users. - Secure accounts and communications. If your Apple Account may also be compromised, use a trusted device to change its password through Apple’s official interface, review trusted devices and phone numbers, and check for unexpected recovery contacts or changes. For high-risk communications, use a separate trusted device while getting advice.
Changing an account password and investigating a device are separate tasks: a password change does not establish whether spyware is present or remove it. If a device is managed by an employer or organization, coordinate with its security team before changing settings that could affect management.

How to turn on Lockdown Mode
Apple says Lockdown Mode is available on iPhone and iPad with iOS 16 or later, with additional protections in iOS 17 and later. Update first when possible, then follow this path:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Privacy & Security.
- Scroll down and tap Lockdown Mode.
- Tap Turn On Lockdown Mode.
- Tap Turn On & Restart, then enter the device passcode when prompted.
Apple recommends enabling the mode on all supported Apple devices when appropriate. Turning it on for an iPhone also turns it on for a paired Apple Watch; it must be enabled separately on other devices, such as an iPad or Mac.

What changes when it is on
- Most message attachment types are blocked, and links and link previews in Messages are unavailable.
- Some complex web technologies are restricted, so certain sites may load incorrectly or more slowly.
- Incoming FaceTime calls are blocked unless you have previously contacted the caller; some Apple service invitations are also blocked.
- Shared Albums and some photo-sharing behavior are restricted.
- New configuration profiles cannot be installed, and the device does not automatically join unsecured Wi-Fi networks.
- 2G and 3G cellular support is disabled on iPhone and iPad; some accessories and computer connections require the device to be unlocked.
Ordinary phone calls, plain-text messages, and Emergency SOS continue to work. If an important website or app is disrupted, Apple allows some trusted sites or apps to be excluded from certain restrictions; doing so weakens protection and should be an intentional exception. A device already enrolled in organizational management remains managed, but new profiles cannot be installed while Lockdown Mode is active. Why you should not erase the phone first
Erasing the device can destroy forensic evidence, and it may not prevent an attacker from targeting you again. Access Now advises recipients to preserve the device and consult specialists before resetting it. Discuss backups, examination, or a reset with an incident-response expert who understands the risks and your circumstances.

Lockdown Mode is not a conventional antivirus scanner, and replacing the phone is not automatically necessary or sufficient. For a credible targeted-spyware concern, built-in protections and specialist assessment are more relevant than buying a generic antivirus subscription.
If you did not receive an alert
No notification does not prove that a device is perfectly secure, but it is not a reason to assume infection either. Apple says most people will never be targeted by mercenary spyware. For routine protection, keep software current, use a strong device passcode and two-factor authentication, choose unique passwords, install apps through the App Store, and be cautious with unexpected links and attachments.
Lockdown Mode is an unusually restrictive protection for people facing credible elevated risk, not a required setting for every iPhone owner. If your work or circumstances make you a likely target, consider discussing your security practices with a specialist even if you have not received an Apple notification.
