AppleCare+ vs. Third-Party Insurance: Which Is Worth It?

There is no universal winner. AppleCare+ is usually the straightforward choice for an Apple owner who wants Apple-authorized hardware service and accidental-damage protection. AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss can make sense if losing or having an iPhone stolen is a serious financial risk and the plan is available for the device and country. A third-party policy is worth considering only when its total premium, excess, claim limits, exclusions and replacement terms are better for your situation. No reliable published study establishes that either option is cheaper for the average customer.

What you are really choosing

AppleCare+ and third-party insurance solve overlapping but different problems. AppleCare+ is an Apple service plan that adds hardware service and technical support, with accidental-damage protection. The Theft and Loss version combines those benefits with a limited insurance benefit for a device that is stolen or lost. A third-party policy may be sold by a carrier, insurer, contents-insurance provider or standalone device-insurance company, and the contract can cover a different set of events.

The name “phone insurance” does not tell you whether a policy covers loss, theft, liquid damage, mechanical breakdown, cosmetic damage or only accidental breakage. Read the actual policy wording. The same caution applies to AppleCare+: standard AppleCare+ does not automatically include theft or loss; that protection is a separate plan option where offered.

AppleCare+ coverage and limits

Standard AppleCare+

Apple describes AppleCare+ as providing “additional hardware service and technical support from Apple, including coverage for unlimited incidents of accidental damage per device covered.” That makes it particularly clear for owners who want repairs handled through Apple’s service system and who are concerned about repeated drops, cracked glass or other accidental damage.

“Unlimited” refers to the number of accidental-damage incidents described in Apple’s current plan terms. It does not mean every repair is free: a service fee applies to covered incidents, and the exact fee depends on the device, damage type, country and plan terms.

AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss

The Theft and Loss option adds up to two theft or loss incidents every 12 months under Apple’s current legal summary. Each approved theft or loss claim has a deductible. Find My must be enabled when the device is lost or stolen and must remain enabled throughout the claim process. If Find My was turned off, Apple can be unable to approve the claim.

AppleCare One is a separate multi-device plan. Apple’s current legal summary describes up to three theft or loss incidents every 12 months for eligible iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch devices under that plan. Do not treat that limit as the limit for a single-device AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss plan.

US iPhone service-fee example

On the US iPhone coverage overview checked in 2026, Apple lists these example fees:

Claim type US example fee Important qualification
Screen or back-glass damage $29 Model and plan terms apply
Other accidental damage $99 Model and plan terms apply
Theft or loss $149 deductible Applies to the Theft and Loss option and approved claims

These are US examples, not worldwide prices. Check the current Apple page for your exact iPhone model, state and plan before treating a fee as your own cost. The fee is paid in addition to the plan premium.

Repair and replacement logistics

AppleCare+ routes covered hardware service through Apple’s service process. Apple Support says that, after an approved theft or loss claim, a traveler may receive a replacement in a country where the coverage is available. Delivery can take up to four business days, subject to device availability and regional or model differences. That is a service expectation, not a guaranteed delivery time for every claim.

What “third-party insurance” can mean

There is no standardized third-party product. Australian government consumer guidance, for example, identifies four broad routes:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Coverage sold through a telecommunications provider.
  • Portable contents insurance that follows selected belongings outside the home.
  • Standalone device insurance.
  • A manufacturer plan.

Those categories can differ in excess, waiting periods, claim limits, proof requirements, replacement quality, repair network and travel coverage. A contents policy may cover several possessions but impose a single per-item limit. A carrier policy may require that the device be on a particular account. A standalone policy may cover theft but exclude unattended loss or impose a maximum payout based on the device’s depreciated value.

Consequently, “third party” is not an answer to the coverage question. The policy schedule and exclusions are.

AppleCare+ and third-party insurance compared

Decision point AppleCare+ or AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss Questions for a third-party policy
Covered events Hardware service and accidental damage; theft and loss only with the added option Does it cover accidental damage, breakdown, theft, loss, liquid damage or only selected events?
Cost when you claim A plan premium plus a model- and damage-dependent service fee or theft/loss deductible What excess applies to each claim type? Are there separate processing, shipping or replacement fees?
Claim frequency Unlimited accidental-damage incidents are described for covered devices; Theft and Loss allows up to two theft/loss incidents every 12 months How many claims are allowed, and is there a waiting period or annual cap?
Claim conditions Find My must remain enabled for a theft or loss claim What proof of ownership, police report, account status, security setting or incident evidence is required?
Repair route Apple hardware service and Apple’s support process Who chooses the repairer, which parts are used, and what service network applies?
Replacement Apple determines the service or replacement route under the plan terms Is the replacement new, refurbished, equivalent or cash-settled? What payout limit applies?
Geography Service and accidental-damage coverage can be restricted to the country where the device was purchased Is the device covered at home, while traveling and after moving countries?
Value over time Premiums and fees must be weighed against the device’s current value Do premiums continue while the payout limit falls through depreciation?

How to calculate which option is worth it

Do not compare only the monthly price shown at checkout. Calculate the maximum amount you could pay during the ownership period and the amount you would still owe after a claim.

1. Define the ownership period

Use the period you realistically expect to keep the device, not an indefinite lifetime. For a two-year ownership period, add every monthly AppleCare+ payment or the full fixed-term price, then add the likely service fee for the type of incident you are protecting against. For a third-party policy, include every premium due during those two years and the applicable excess.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Separate the risks

Estimate accidental damage, theft and loss separately. A plan can be attractive for cracked-screen repairs but poor value if your main concern is theft. Conversely, a theft-and-loss policy may be unnecessary if you would replace a damaged phone yourself and rarely carry it outside the home.

  • [Easy Disassemble] Making incidental repairs quick and easy! Very nice, flexible cable
  • [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by

3. Compare the claim cost, not just the premium

For each likely claim, write down the premium already paid, the excess or deductible, shipping or administrative fees, and any amount the policy will not reimburse. Compare that total with the cost of replacing the device without insurance.

4. Use today’s device value

Australian consumer guidance from Moneysmart warns that devices lose value quickly and says insurance is most useful when a device is new. That is context-specific Australian guidance, but the underlying calculation is broadly useful: a premium that made sense for a new flagship can become difficult to justify after the device’s resale and replacement value have fallen.

5. Test the worst plausible outcome

Ask what happens if you make no claim, one accidental-damage claim, or a theft/loss claim. Check whether a second claim is allowed, whether the excess rises, and whether the insurer can cancel or decline renewal after a claim. A low premium is not a bargain if the event you fear is excluded.

When AppleCare+ is usually the stronger fit

  • You want Apple-authorized service. The service route is defined by Apple rather than by an insurer’s repair network.
  • You expect accidental damage. Someone who has repeatedly cracked screens or damaged devices may value the plan’s described unlimited accidental-damage incidents, subject to service fees and terms.
  • You want predictable theft-and-loss conditions. The added option states a two-incident annual limit and a deductible, while still requiring Find My to stay enabled.
  • You are buying a new, expensive Apple device. The protection is easier to justify while the device’s replacement cost is high.
  • You are still inside the enrollment window. Apple’s US iPhone enrollment page says AppleCare plans can be purchased within 60 days for US iPhones; the exact window varies by device, country and plan.

AppleCare+ can be a poor fit when the device was bought in another country, when theft or loss is unavailable in your market, or when the premium plus service fee approaches the cost of replacing the phone yourself.

When third-party insurance may be the better fit

  • Your existing policy already covers the phone. Portable contents insurance can sometimes protect several belongings, although item limits and exclusions must be checked.
  • You need coverage Apple does not provide in your market. A local policy may include travel, theft, loss or household coverage that is unavailable through AppleCare+ where you live.
  • The total cost is materially lower for your risk. Compare the complete premium and excess with Apple’s plan rather than comparing a promotional first month.
  • You prefer cash settlement or a broader repair network. Some policies may offer those routes, but the contract controls whether they are actually available.
  • You insure more than one person or device. A household or contents policy can be efficient if its per-item limits are high enough and claims are not restricted in ways that defeat the purpose.

Third-party cover is not automatically better for older devices. If the payout is based on depreciated value, the maximum settlement can fall while premiums continue. Check cancellation terms and the insurer’s right to replace rather than pay cash.

Geography, travel and purchase timing

Country of purchase can matter

Apple’s North American terms say Apple may restrict iPhone, iPad and Apple Watch hardware service and accidental-damage coverage to the country where the covered device was originally purchased. A phone bought abroad may therefore have different service rights from one bought locally.

Theft-and-loss availability is not worldwide

Apple Support lists Theft and Loss availability in Australia, Austria, Chile, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, India, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Mexico, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom and the United States. The list can change, so confirm availability before purchase rather than relying on a plan name shown in an older article or video.

Travel claims need a separate check

Ask both providers whether a loss abroad is covered, which country’s deductible applies, whether a police report is required, and where a replacement can be delivered. Apple’s support guidance allows a replacement for an approved claim in a country where coverage is available, but regional and model availability still apply.

Enrollment timing is a real constraint

Apple’s US iPhone page gives a 60-day enrollment period for AppleCare plans. Other devices and countries can have different eligibility checks or deadlines. Third-party insurers may require purchase within a short period, an inspection, or proof that the device was working when insured. Confirm the deadline before assuming you can add coverage later.

Questions to ask before buying a third-party policy

  1. Is accidental damage covered, and does that include liquid damage and back-glass damage?
  2. Are theft and unexplained loss both covered, or only theft supported by a police report?
  3. What is the excess for each event, and can more than one fee apply?
  4. How many claims are allowed during 12 months and during the policy term?
  5. Is there a waiting period before a claim can be made?
  6. What evidence is required: proof of purchase, photographs, a police report, device location data or account records?
  7. Will the provider repair the original device, replace it with a refurbished device, supply an equivalent model or pay cash?
  8. Does the payout reflect the original purchase price or the device’s depreciated value?
  9. Are accessories, unauthorized repairs, cosmetic marks, software problems and loss while unattended excluded?
  10. Does cover continue while traveling, after moving house or after changing mobile carriers?
  11. Can the policy be canceled, and are premiums refundable if the phone is sold?
  12. Can the provider cancel or refuse renewal after a claim?

Common mistakes that make either choice poor value

Buying theft protection without enabling Find My

For AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss, Find My must be on when the incident occurs and throughout the claim. Enable it before there is a problem and do not remove the device from your Apple Account while a claim is being processed unless Apple instructs you to do so.

Assuming a deductible is the whole cost

The plan premium is a separate cost. A $29 screen service fee does not mean the repair costs $29 in total if you have also paid months of premiums. Use the ownership-period calculation instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Insuring a depreciated phone indefinitely

As the phone’s value falls, a fixed premium can consume a larger share of the amount you could recover. Recalculate when the device is older, especially if a third-party policy uses a depreciated payout.

Confusing mechanical failure with accidental damage

Ask whether a policy covers ordinary breakdown, battery depletion, accidental damage or all three. Those are different claim categories and may have different fees or exclusions.

Ignoring repair quality and turnaround

A policy that pays less but leaves you without a phone for weeks may be worse for your work or safety than a plan with a higher premium and a clearer service route. Check the permitted repair network, replacement condition and shipping process before focusing on price.

Relying on an old fee or availability list

Apple changes prices, enrollment rules and country availability. Treat the US fee figures in this article as the 2026 example they are, then verify the current terms for the exact model and region.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A practical decision framework

Choose AppleCare+ when all of these are true

  • The device is eligible and you can enroll within the applicable window.
  • Apple-authorized repair is important to you.
  • Accidental damage is your main concern, or Theft and Loss is available and you accept its deductible and Find My requirement.
  • The total premium plus likely service fees is reasonable compared with replacing the device.

Choose a third-party policy when all of these are true

  • The policy explicitly covers the event you fear.
  • Its total premium, excess and claim limits beat AppleCare+ for your ownership period.
  • The repair or replacement route is acceptable, including refurbished-equipment terms and payout limits.
  • Its geography, travel rules and eligibility match your life.

Skip additional insurance when this is true

If you could replace the phone comfortably from savings, the combined premium and likely excess may not buy meaningful financial protection. Set aside the amount you would have paid and keep a backup plan for a replacement instead. That is a personal-risk decision, not a claim that self-insuring is cheaper for everyone.

Bottom line

AppleCare+ is the clearer choice for Apple owners who prioritize Apple service and accidental-damage protection. Add Theft and Loss only after confirming availability, the deductible, the two-incident annual limit and the Find My requirement. Third-party insurance can win when a specific local policy covers more relevant risks at a lower total cost, but “third party” is not a standardized product. Compare the complete contract against your device’s current value, then choose the option whose exclusions and claim process you can accept.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
