AppleCare+ is the natural protection plan for Apple’s iPhone Duo, while Samsung Care+ is the matching plan for Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip phones. Neither is universally better. Samsung’s US plan is stronger on stated theft-and-loss allowance, mechanical-breakdown language and 24/7 support; Apple’s advantage is a clearly published US iPhone service-fee schedule and Apple’s own repair network. For either phone, confirm the exact model quote, enrollment deadline, country terms and foldable-specific service fees before paying.
The short answer
Choose the manufacturer’s plan for the foldable you actually own. AppleCare+ is available for iPhone Duo in markets where Apple offers it, and Samsung Care+ is designed for eligible Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip models. A third-party policy cannot be assumed to provide the same parts, technicians or claim process.

The better value depends on your largest risk. If theft or loss is your concern, Samsung’s US Theft and Loss tier states a higher annual claim limit. If you mainly fear cracked glass, compare the model-specific screen fee and the plan premium at checkout. If you are worried about hinge or display failure without an accident, read the mechanical-breakdown wording rather than relying on the headline “accidental damage” benefit.
What each plan is meant to cover
| Question | AppleCare+ for iPhone Duo | Samsung Care+ for Galaxy Z Fold/Z Flip |
|---|---|---|
| Eligible device | Apple iPhone Duo, where Apple offers the plan | Eligible Samsung Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip models |
| Accidental damage | Apple states unlimited accidental-damage incidents per covered device, subject to plan terms and service fees | Samsung US advertises unlimited repairs for accidental damage from handling |
| Theft and loss | Separate tier; up to two theft or loss incidents in 12 months | Separate tier; up to three lost, stolen or unrecoverable claims in any consecutive 12-month period |
| Mechanical breakdown | Check the iPhone Duo plan terms; the cited Apple summary emphasizes accidental damage and hardware service | Explicitly included in Samsung’s Care+ descriptions |
| US service-fee figures | Apple’s general US iPhone schedule lists $29 for screen or back-glass damage, $99 for other accidental damage and $149 for theft or loss; iPhone Duo’s fee must be confirmed | Samsung says pricing varies by device MSRP and program; obtain the model-specific quote |
| Support highlights | Apple repair and support channels under AppleCare service benefits | Genuine Samsung parts, certified technicians, 24/7 expert support and advertised same-day replacement where available |
“Unlimited” does not mean every claim is automatically approved or free. Both manufacturers reserve the right to apply exclusions, authentication requirements, service fees, availability limits and other conditions in the plan contract.

Device eligibility and the 2026 iPhone Duo change
iPhone Duo
Apple announced iPhone Duo on September 9, 2026, calling it the company’s first foldable iPhone. The phone has a 7.6-inch inner display and a 5.4-inch outer display. Apple’s October 15 update says customers in available markets can select AppleCare+ or AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss for the device.
That timing matters because a newly launched product may not use the same service-fee table as older iPhone models. Apple’s published US figures are useful as a reference, not a promise that the Duo will have a $29 screen fee or any particular premium. Check the offer shown for your serial number or purchase channel.
Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip
Samsung Care+ eligibility is model-specific. The US support description covers eligible Galaxy phones and says the price depends on the device’s manufacturer suggested retail price. A Z Fold and a Z Flip can therefore have different monthly premiums, deductibles or replacement charges. Select the exact storage and model variant when requesting a quote; a broad “Galaxy foldable” estimate is not enough.
Accidental damage: the real foldable-phone test
Foldables create two repair exposures that conventional phones do not: a large flexible inner display and a hinge assembly that is repeatedly opened and closed. A drop can damage the exterior screen, inner panel, frame, cameras or hinge in one event. Dust, impact deformation and liquid exposure can also make diagnosis more complicated.

Apple’s legal AppleCare description says the plan provides additional hardware service and technical support, including unlimited accidental-damage incidents per covered device. The retrieved Apple material does not provide a separate iPhone Duo schedule for inner-screen, outer-screen or hinge repairs, so those components should be confirmed in the Duo terms or by an Apple representative before enrollment.
Samsung’s US wording is more explicit about the category: “Unlimited Repairs for Accidental Damage from Handling.” That is reassuring for repeated drops, but it still does not establish that every hinge or inner-display failure is treated identically. Ask whether the event is classified as accidental damage, mechanical breakdown, liquid damage or an exclusion, and what fee applies to each classification.
Questions to ask before buying
- Is the inner display listed separately from the cover display?
- Is hinge deformation repaired, replaced or treated as a full-device replacement?
- Does liquid exposure remain eligible, and is there a separate fee?
- Are cosmetic scratches excluded unless they prevent normal operation?
- Will a replacement be new, refurbished or an equivalent device?
- Does opening the phone outside the manufacturer network void coverage?
Theft and loss: compare limits, not marketing labels
Theft-and-loss coverage is a separate tier from ordinary accidental-damage protection. It generally requires more proof than a cracked-screen claim: you may need to report the incident, disable the device, verify your account and pay a theft-and-loss service fee before a replacement is released.

Apple’s Theft and Loss tier states up to two theft or loss incidents during a 12-month period. Samsung’s US page states a maximum of three lost, stolen and/or unrecoverable claims within any consecutive 12-month period. The rolling-period wording means Samsung’s allowance is not necessarily reset on January 1; the relevant window follows the dates of prior claims.

A claim limit is only one part of the comparison. Check whether the plan requires Find My or a comparable tracking feature to have been enabled, whether an unrecoverable device is treated differently from a confirmed theft, and whether replacement inventory is restricted by market or capacity. Keep your purchase receipt, device identifier and carrier account details in a secure place so a claim does not stall while you reconstruct ownership.
Mechanical breakdown and failures without an accident
Samsung explicitly lists mechanical-breakdown support in its Care+ descriptions. That language is important for a foldable because a hinge, display cable or sensor can fail through normal use rather than a visible drop. The contract still controls what counts as a covered breakdown and whether a manufacturer warranty handles the issue first.
AppleCare+ provides additional hardware service, but the Apple passages available for iPhone Duo emphasize accidental damage and hardware service rather than a separate mechanical-breakdown promise. Read the Duo plan terms for defects, battery service, hinge mechanisms and display failures that occur without an accident. A failure covered by Apple’s standard warranty may not consume an accidental-damage incident, while a damaged component outside warranty may incur the applicable AppleCare fee.
Premiums and out-of-pocket fees
Apple’s published US figures
Apple’s US fee schedule for iPhone lists three reference charges: $29 for screen and back-glass damage, $99 for other accidental damage and $149 for theft and loss. These are US schedule figures for iPhone and should not be treated as confirmed iPhone Duo prices until Apple displays the Duo-specific terms. The plan premium itself is also model- and term-dependent.

Samsung’s device-based pricing
Samsung states that Care+ pricing depends on device MSRP and the selected program. Because the manufacturer does not provide a single universal foldable price in the cited material, compare the quote for your exact Z Fold or Z Flip, including taxes, monthly versus upfront payment, accidental-damage fee, theft-and-loss fee and any replacement charge.
How to calculate likely value
Estimate the number of incidents you realistically face over the ownership period, then add the plan premiums to the applicable service fees. A single repair can justify coverage when an inner-panel replacement is expensive, but a low-risk owner may prefer to self-insure. Do not compare only the cheapest screen fee: a plan with a lower screen charge can still cost more if its premium or other-damage fee is higher.
| Cost item | What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Plan premium | Monthly or upfront amount for your exact model and country | Determines the break-even point before any claim |
| Inner-display fee | Specific charge, if separately listed | Usually the most consequential foldable repair exposure |
| Cover-display/back-glass fee | Charge for exterior glass damage | Common drop scenario |
| Other accidental damage | Frame, hinge, camera or liquid-damage classification | Prevents a low screen fee from creating a surprise bill |
| Theft/loss fee | Replacement charge and claim requirements | Shows the real cost of using the separate tier |
| Replacement logistics | Shipping, same-day availability and geographic limits | Affects downtime as much as the dollar amount |
Repair and replacement logistics
Samsung highlights genuine parts, certified technicians, 24/7 expert support and same-day replacement in its US Care+ materials. “Same day” is an availability promise, not a guarantee for every city, color, storage configuration or incident. Confirm whether your local service location stocks the required inner display or whether the phone must be shipped.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
AppleCare service uses Apple repair and support channels. Ask whether the Duo can be serviced at an Apple Store, an authorized provider or by mail in your region, and whether a replacement unit is offered when a foldable cannot be economically repaired. Turnaround depends on inventory, market and the fault diagnosed.
Prepare before a claim
- Back up photos, messages, authenticator data and eSIM information while the phone still works.
- Record the serial number and IMEI from the settings screen and the original purchase receipt.
- Use a strong passcode and enable the manufacturer’s tracking and remote-lock feature.
- Photograph existing damage so a new incident is easy to document.
- Do not attempt a hinge or display repair yourself; unapproved parts or opening the device can affect eligibility.
How to enroll without missing eligibility
- Identify the exact model. Note the generation, storage capacity, carrier version and country of purchase.
- Check the enrollment window. The available Apple and Samsung offers can impose deadlines tied to purchase or activation; the current checkout and terms control.
- Compare both tiers. Price ordinary accidental-damage coverage separately from Theft and Loss rather than assuming the latter is included.
- Read the fee table. Capture screen, inner-display, other-damage, theft/loss and replacement charges in writing.
- Verify service territory. A plan bought in one country may not provide identical service while traveling or after relocation.
- Save the contract. Keep the confirmation email, policy number, deductible schedule and claim phone number with your device records.
Claim process and common failure points
For an accidental-damage claim
- Stop using the phone if the inner panel is lifting, the hinge is grinding, the battery is swollen or glass is shedding.
- Back up data and remove payment cards or sensitive accounts if the device remains accessible.
- Open a claim through the manufacturer’s support channel and describe the event accurately; do not label mechanical failure as a drop.
- Follow instructions for diagnostics, shipping, identity verification and disabling security locks.
- Pay the quoted service fee only after confirming the repair or replacement outcome and expected timing.
- Inspect the repaired or replacement device before leaving the service location or signing for delivery.
For theft or loss
- Use the tracking service to mark the phone lost and place it in lost mode.
- Contact your carrier to suspend service and protect the number from unauthorized use.
- File a police report when required by local rules or the plan administrator.
- Start the Theft and Loss claim promptly, provide the device identifier and ownership proof, and complete any account-verification steps.
- Do not remove the device from your account until the administrator instructs you; an active lock may be required to approve the claim.
- After approval, pay the theft-and-loss fee and activate the replacement with a new eSIM or physical SIM.
Why claims are delayed or denied
- The device cannot be authenticated because the serial number or receipt does not match.
- A required tracking, lock or account setting was disabled before a loss claim.
- The incident falls outside the covered territory, enrollment window or annual claim allowance.
- Damage is cosmetic, intentional, caused by unauthorized modification or excluded as liquid or catastrophic damage under the contract.
- The customer continues using a device with a safety-critical fault and worsens the damage.
Which plan is worth it for each buyer?
Choose AppleCare+ for iPhone Duo when
- You are buying iPhone Duo and want Apple’s own repair and support route.
- You value a published US iPhone fee framework but will verify the Duo-specific schedule before enrollment.
- Your main concern is repeated accidental damage rather than theft, or you want the optional Theft and Loss tier with its stated allowance.
- You live in a market where AppleCare+ for Duo is officially offered and convenient service locations are available.
Choose Samsung Care+ for a Galaxy Z Fold or Z Flip when
- You want the plan that explicitly mentions mechanical breakdown as well as accidental damage.
- You place a high value on 24/7 expert support, genuine Samsung parts or the possibility of same-day replacement.
- You need the higher stated Theft and Loss claim allowance in Samsung’s US program.
- You are comfortable checking a device-specific price because Samsung does not publish one universal foldable premium in the cited material.
Consider self-insuring when
- You can replace the phone without debt and have a reliable repair fund.
- Your usage is mostly indoors, the phone is protected by a robust case and you rarely replace devices.
- The total premium plus likely service fee is close to the cost of a planned replacement.
- You are outside the plan’s supported country or cannot meet its enrollment timing.
A practical decision checklist
Before selecting either plan, write down the answers to these questions:
- What is the exact phone model, country and purchase date?
- What does the manufacturer quote today for the plan premium?
- What is the fee for inner-display, cover-display, hinge, liquid and “other” damage?
- How many theft or loss claims are permitted, and over what counting period?
- Which tracking, account-lock and police-report steps are mandatory?
- Where will the phone be repaired, and what happens if parts are unavailable?
- Does the contract cover a failure that happens without a drop?
- What happens to your data, eSIM and accessories during replacement?
Verdict
For iPhone Duo, AppleCare+ is the appropriate baseline because it is Apple’s own protection plan and is offered for the foldable in supported markets. For Galaxy Z Fold or Z Flip, Samsung Care+ is the direct equivalent. Samsung has the clearer published advantage for mechanical-breakdown language, support availability and the higher stated US Theft and Loss allowance. Apple offers a straightforward published US iPhone fee schedule, but the Duo’s exact charges still require confirmation. The best choice is therefore the plan whose model-specific quote, inner-screen fee, failure coverage and local service access match the risk you can afford to carry.
