There is no universal winner. AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss is usually the cleaner choice if you want Apple-directed support, a published $29 screen or back-glass fee, and a clearly stated limit of two theft-or-loss replacements per year. Carrier insurance can be better when the quote for your exact iPhone and state is materially cheaper, when you want the premium billed with your wireless account, or when a carrier’s repair and replacement network is more convenient. Compare the actual model-specific quote, deductibles, claim limits, and replacement terms before enrolling; prices and eligibility can change.
The short answer: choose based on how you expect to use the coverage
AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss combines two products: an Apple service contract and an insurance benefit. Apple describes coverage for hardware, technical support, battery depletion, and accidental damage from handling under AppleCare+, with theft and loss handled by the insurance portion. Apple also lists exclusions, including normal wear and tear, cosmetic damage that does not affect function, reckless or intentional acts, unauthorized parts or service, and pre-existing defects.

Carrier plans vary more widely. Verizon Wireless Phone Protection covers loss, theft, and damage, including water damage. AT&T Protect Advantage offers unlimited claims, but each claim is subject to a maximum value and a device-tier deductible. A carrier may also combine insurance with an extended warranty, security tools, or other account benefits.
The practical decision is a trade-off among five things:
#1 Best Overall
- Super Magnetic Attraction: Powerful built-in magnets, easier place-and-go wireless charging and compatible with MagSafe
- Compatibility: Only compatible with iPhone 13/14; precise cutouts for easy access to all ports, buttons, sensors and cameras, soft and sensitive buttons with good response, are easy to press
- Matte Translucent Back: Features a flexible TPU frame and a matte coating on the hard PC back to provide you with a premium touch and excellent grip, while the entire matte back coating perfectly blocks smudges, fingerprints and even scratches
- Shock Protection: Passing military drop tests up to 10 feet, your device is effectively protected from violent impacts and drops
- Check your phone model: Before you order, please confirm your phone model to find out which product is right for you
- Expected cost: monthly premiums plus the fee or deductible you are likely to pay.
- Damage coverage: whether a cracked screen, broken back glass, liquid damage, or a more serious failure receives a low-cost repair.
- Theft and loss terms: deductible, replacement limit, claim process, and delivery time.
- Service channel: Apple Store or Apple-authorized service versus a carrier or claims administrator.
- Replacement standard: what the contract says about new, refurbished, restored, or substitute equipment.
Because carrier prices, state forms, device tiers, and inventory change, a comparison based only on a national advertised price can produce the wrong answer for your phone.

What AppleCare+ covers
Accidental damage
Apple publishes a $29 service fee for each accidental-damage incident involving the screen or back glass. Other accidental damage has a $99 service fee. Those are service fees, not the total cost of ownership: you still pay the AppleCare+ premium, and the contract determines which damage qualifies.
Theft and loss
AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss lists a $149 deductible for a stolen or lost iPhone. Apple Support says the coverage allows up to two lost or stolen iPhone replacements every year. A claim still has to meet the policy requirements, such as device and account conditions specified by Apple and the insurer.
Battery and technical support
The service-contract portion includes technical support and battery depletion coverage. Battery coverage is not the same as a free upgrade whenever battery capacity declines slightly; the contract’s definition of depletion and service eligibility controls.
Exclusions that matter
Apple’s disclosure excludes normal wear and tear, cosmetic damage that does not affect functionality, reckless or intentional acts, unauthorized parts or service, and pre-existing defects, among other exclusions. A repair performed by an unauthorized provider can therefore affect a later claim. Keep service records and use an Apple-authorized channel when the contract requires it.

What Verizon protection covers
Wireless Phone Protection
Verizon Wireless Phone Protection covers loss, theft, and damage, including water damage. Verizon lists nationwide monthly prices of $4.95 or $7.95. In New York, the listed monthly prices are $4.25, $5.25, or $8.25. The deductible depends on the device and plan, so the lowest monthly price is not automatically the lowest-cost option after a claim.
Bundled options
Verizon Mobile Protect combines Wireless Phone Protection with Verizon Extended Warranty and Mobile Secure. Verizon states that a deductible is charged in addition to the monthly fee. A bundle can be useful if you value the warranty or security features, but compare those benefits with what AppleCare+ already provides before paying for overlapping coverage.
Cancellation and re-enrollment
Verizon warns that cancelling Wireless Phone Protection can affect eligibility for another protection option unless the device meets that option’s eligibility requirements. Do not cancel first and assume you can re-enroll later; ask Verizon to confirm the device’s eligibility and the available replacement plan before making the change.
What AT&T Protect Advantage covers
Premiums and claim limits
Under AT&T terms effective October 20, 2025, Protect Advantage costs $16 per month for device tiers 1–2, $19 for tiers 3–4, and $25 for tiers 5–6. AT&T states that the plan permits an unlimited number of claims, with each claim limited to $3,500. “Unlimited” therefore does not mean an unlimited dollar value on one claim.
Repairs and deductibles
Eligible repairs can have a $0 service fee. When a replacement is required, AT&T lists deductibles of $25, $100, $225, $275, $300, or $400, determined by the device tier. A premium iPhone in a high tier can therefore have a substantially larger out-of-pocket replacement cost than the $25 figure shown for the lowest tier.

AT&T says an approved replacement may be new or AT&T Certified Restored equipment. Its terms explain that this can include previously opened, used, refurbished, or remanufactured devices, and that replacement parts may not always be original. AT&T also states that, once a claim is approved, the replacement can arrive as soon as the next day. Delivery depends on approval, address, inventory, and the current fulfillment process.

Enrollment window
AT&T generally permits enrollment within 30 days of activation or upgrade, or during an open-enrollment period, subject to device eligibility. If you decline coverage at purchase, check the deadline immediately rather than assuming it will remain available.
Compare total cost, not just the monthly premium
Use this simple calculation for each plan:
Expected annual cost = 12 months of premiums + likely service fees or deductibles − any covered repair value you would otherwise pay yourself.
The last term is not a guaranteed rebate; it represents the expense the plan may replace. Run separate scenarios for a year with no claim, one screen repair, and one theft or loss claim.
| Plan or option | Published monthly amount | Annual premium before claims | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Verizon Wireless Phone Protection | $4.95 | $59.40 | Nationwide listed price; deductible varies by device and plan |
| Verizon Wireless Phone Protection | $7.95 | $95.40 | Nationwide listed price; deductible varies by device and plan |
| Verizon New York option | $4.25, $5.25, or $8.25 | $51.00, $63.00, or $99.00 | New York prices; exact option and deductible depend on the plan |
| AT&T Protect Advantage tiers 1–2 | $16 | $192 | Terms effective October 20, 2025 |
| AT&T Protect Advantage tiers 3–4 | $19 | $228 | Terms effective October 20, 2025 |
| AT&T Protect Advantage tiers 5–6 | $25 | $300 | Terms effective October 20, 2025 |
| AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss | Not stated in the available product information | Not stated | Obtain Apple’s current quote for the exact iPhone and enrollment option |
For example, a $4.95 Verizon premium costs $59.40 over 12 months before a claim. That does not tell you whether it beats AppleCare+, because Apple’s premium, your Verizon deductible, and the likelihood of a claim are still missing. A plan with a higher premium and a low repair fee may cost less for someone who breaks a screen every year; a lower-premium plan with a high theft deductible may be worse for someone who travels frequently.
Damage economics: screen, back glass, liquid, and major failures
Frequent screen damage
Apple’s $29 screen or back-glass service fee is easy to model. If you expect one qualifying incident, add $29 to the annual AppleCare+ premium. Carrier plans require the exact deductible from the quote; do not substitute the monthly premium for the repair cost.
Back-glass repairs
Apple explicitly groups back-glass damage with screen damage for the $29 service fee. On a carrier plan, ask whether back-glass damage is repaired, replaced, or treated as other accidental damage. The distinction can move a claim from a low repair fee to a much higher replacement deductible.

Liquid damage
Verizon explicitly includes water damage in Wireless Phone Protection. AppleCare+ and AT&T coverage depend on the applicable contract definitions and exclusions. Read the damage definition rather than assuming that every liquid incident is handled like a cracked screen.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Battery service
Apple’s service-contract description includes battery depletion coverage. Carrier insurance may focus on loss, theft, and accidental damage, with warranty benefits supplied separately or in a bundle. If battery aging is your main concern, compare the battery-service language instead of buying theft coverage you do not need.
Theft and loss: compare the deductible and the number of replacements
Apple’s published theft-and-loss deductible is $149, and Apple Support states a limit of up to two lost or stolen iPhone replacements per year. That annual limit is a meaningful advantage for someone who wants a clearly stated replacement allowance.
Verizon covers theft and loss, but the deductible is device- and plan-specific. AT&T covers replacement claims under its terms, with a tier-based deductible and an individual claim limit of $3,500. Ask each provider these questions before enrolling:
- What is the deductible for my exact iPhone model and storage tier?
- How many theft or loss claims are allowed during the coverage year?
- What steps are required to suspend the line, report the incident, and erase the device?
- Is a replacement shipped, collected at a store, or supplied through a repair partner?
- Does the replacement have the same storage, color, and regional specification, or can a substitute be supplied?
Keep your device’s serial number or IMEI in a secure place. It can speed up a theft or loss report, but never publish it publicly.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

AppleCare+ directs you toward Apple’s support and Apple-authorized service ecosystem. That can reduce uncertainty about diagnostics, parts compatibility, software setup, and post-repair support. It may be less convenient if the nearest authorized location is far away or if you prefer handling every claim through your wireless account.

Carrier insurance uses the carrier, an insurer, or a claims administrator. The process may offer shipment or local repair options, but the exact provider and inventory can change. AT&T’s terms expressly allow new or Certified Restored replacements and describe used, refurbished, or remanufactured possibilities. If receiving a restored device would bother you, treat that clause as a central decision factor rather than a footnote.
Ask how a replacement is configured before you file a claim: whether it is unlocked, whether it supports your regional bands, whether accessories are included, and how the return of the damaged device works. A replacement’s condition and compatibility matter as much as the deductible.
Eligibility, enrollment, cancellation, and carrier changes
When you can enroll
AT&T generally uses a 30-day window after activation or upgrade, plus possible open-enrollment periods, subject to eligibility. Verizon and Apple also apply eligibility rules, but the exact window and inspection requirements can vary by product and date. Check the current enrollment screen for your device rather than relying on an older purchase receipt or a general advertisement.
What happens if you cancel
Cancellation can stop future benefits while leaving you responsible for any already-approved claim obligations. Verizon specifically warns that cancelling Wireless Phone Protection may affect eligibility for another protection option. Save the confirmation and ask whether re-enrollment is possible, when it can occur, and whether the phone must pass a new inspection.
Changing carriers
Carrier protection is administered through the carrier account, so ask what happens when you port the number, remove the line, or move the device to another provider. AppleCare+ is associated with the iPhone service contract and theft-and-loss policy, but transfer, refund, and cancellation rules should be confirmed in the current Apple agreement. Do not assume that a plan automatically follows the phone or automatically ends when the SIM changes.
Which plan fits common iPhone owners?
Choose AppleCare+ when Apple service is your priority
- You want Apple-directed technical support and authorized service.
- You value the published $29 screen or back-glass fee and $99 other-damage fee.
- You want a clearly stated $149 theft-or-loss deductible and up to two such replacements per year.
- You want battery-depletion coverage described in the service contract.
Choose carrier insurance when account convenience or price wins
- Your exact carrier quote is materially cheaper after adding the deductible you would actually pay.
- You want premiums charged on the wireless bill and claims handled through the carrier ecosystem.
- You need a benefit such as Verizon’s stated water-damage coverage or AT&T’s eligible $0-service-fee repairs.
- You accept the carrier’s replacement standard, including the possibility of restored or refurbished equipment where the terms allow it.
Consider self-insuring for low-risk use
If you rarely damage phones, can replace the device from savings, and would not miss theft coverage, set aside the equivalent of the premium in an emergency fund. This is not insurance: you bear the full replacement cost, and it provides no repair network or claims service. It is useful only when you understand and accept that risk.
A step-by-step way to compare your exact options
- Record the device details. Note the iPhone model, storage capacity, purchase or upgrade date, carrier, state, and whether the phone is financed.
- Get Apple’s current quote. Record the premium, enrollment deadline, accidental-damage fees, theft-and-loss deductible, claim limit, and cancellation terms shown for your device.
- Get the carrier quote. Record the monthly premium, device tier, repair fee, replacement deductible, claim limit, water-damage treatment, and replacement condition.
- Model three years of use. Calculate the no-claim total, one screen-repair total, and one theft-or-loss total. Include 12 months of premiums for each year you expect to keep the phone.
- Check the service route. Identify the nearest Apple-authorized location, carrier store, mail-in option, and claims administrator. Note expected downtime and whether loaners are offered.
- Read exclusions before paying. Look specifically for unauthorized repairs, cosmetic damage, pre-existing defects, intentional or reckless acts, accessories, and liquid-damage definitions.
- Save proof of coverage. Keep the agreement, enrollment confirmation, IMEI, receipt, and claim instructions in a secure location.
Use the quote generated for your location on the day you enroll. Published figures are useful for screening options, not for replacing the contract.

Common mistakes that make a “cheap” plan expensive
- Comparing premiums without deductibles: a low monthly price can hide a high replacement fee.
- Assuming every crack is a screen claim: back glass and frame damage may be classified differently.
- Ignoring replacement condition: restored or refurbished equipment can be allowed under carrier terms.
- Missing the enrollment window: AT&T generally cites 30 days after activation or upgrade, subject to eligibility.
- Using unauthorized repair: Apple lists unauthorized parts or service among exclusions.
- Cancelling before confirming a replacement: Verizon warns cancellation can affect eligibility for another option.
- Forgetting the claim limit: AT&T’s unlimited-claim language still limits each claim to $3,500; Apple’s theft-and-loss benefit allows up to two replacements per year.
- Treating a screen protector as insurance: a tempered-glass protector can reduce scratches and some impact damage, but it does not replace theft, loss, liquid, or major-damage coverage. Verify exact-model compatibility before buying one.
Bottom line
For a buyer who wants predictable Apple service and straightforward published incident fees, AppleCare+ with Theft and Loss is the stronger default. For a buyer whose carrier quote is substantially cheaper, who values bill integration, or who needs a carrier-specific repair benefit, carrier insurance can be the better value. The decisive comparison is the quote for your exact iPhone and state: annual premium, realistic deductible, claim limit, service channel, and replacement standard.
