Apple announced on September 1, 2026 that “Intel-only apps will no longer run on Mac computers with Apple silicon after this update.” Organizations should therefore treat macOS 27 as a migration deadline: identify every Rosetta-dependent workflow, move software to Universal or Apple silicon builds, and create a documented exception plan.
What Apple’s Rosetta announcement means
Rosetta 2 translates software compiled for Intel processors so it can run on Apple silicon Macs. That compatibility layer made the transition from Intel hardware possible, but Apple now says its general-purpose role ends with macOS 27. An Intel-only application may continue to launch through Rosetta on earlier releases, but it should not be assumed to work on an Apple silicon Mac after the macOS 27 update.

Apple’s developer announcement on September 1, 2026 describes macOS 27 as the “Final release to support Rosetta.” Apple’s Rosetta documentation says the technology will be available through macOS 27 as a general-purpose tool while developers complete their migrations. Apple separately says that a limited subset of Rosetta functionality will remain for older, unmaintained games that depend on Intel-based frameworks. That is a narrow compatibility exception, not a basis for an enterprise application strategy.
The timeline your fleet should use
| Milestone | What it means for IT |
|---|---|
| macOS 26.4 and later | Users may receive a notification when they launch an app that relies on Rosetta. Enrolled organizations can control that notification with allowRosettaUsageAwareness. |
| macOS 26 | Apple identifies this as the last release with full Intel Mac support. Intel hardware should enter a replacement or retirement plan. |
| macOS 27 | Last general-purpose Rosetta release. Intel-only apps are not expected to run on Apple silicon after the update. |
| After macOS 27 | Only a limited subset intended for older, unmaintained games is identified by Apple as remaining functionality. Other exceptions need direct vendor confirmation. |
The dates create two separate decisions. A Mac can be Apple silicon yet still depend on Rosetta for an application, while an Intel Mac has a hardware-support lifecycle issue even if all of its software is already native. Track both dimensions instead of treating “Intel” as one inventory category.

Build a hardware baseline before changing software
Start by segmenting the fleet into Apple silicon Macs, Intel Macs, and devices that cannot meet the target macOS requirements. Record model, operating-system version, warranty status, remaining service life, performance needs and replacement date. Apple’s deployment guidance says organizations with Intel Macs should begin transition planning because macOS 26 is the last release with full Intel Mac support.
Do not infer that every Intel Mac must be replaced immediately, or that every Apple silicon Mac is ready for macOS 27. Set a support date for each Intel device and use the remaining time to validate applications, peripherals and recovery procedures. A temporary hold on an Intel Mac can be a controlled exception; an untracked dependency is not.
Find every app that invokes Rosetta
Use Apple’s Intel-app inventory
On Apple silicon Macs, use the Intel-based Apps view documented by Apple to identify software that launches through Rosetta. Combine that view with endpoint-management inventory so you can see applications across the fleet rather than checking machines one at a time.

- Magic Keyboard with Touch ID and Numeric Keypad delivers a remarkably comfortable and precise typing experience.
- It features an extended layout, with document navigation controls for quick scrolling and full-size arrow keys, which are great for gaming.
- The numeric keypad is also ideal for spreadsheets and finance applications.
- It’s wireless and features a rechargeable battery that will power your keyboard for about a month or more between charges.
For each result, record the application name and version, business owner, criticality, plug-ins, extensions, drivers, helper tools, scripts, peripherals and data formats. An application that opens successfully can still have an Intel-only plug-in, system extension or driver that fails later.
Treat macOS 26.4 notifications as a discovery signal
macOS 26.4 or later may notify a user when an app depends on Rosetta and prompt for an Apple silicon-native update. The notification can reveal software missing from your central inventory, especially on lightly managed devices. Organizations can suppress it on enrolled devices with allowRosettaUsageAwareness, but suppression should follow inventory collection and a policy decision. Hiding the prompt does not remove the dependency.
Remediate applications by risk tier
Assign every Intel-only application one of three outcomes:

- Upgrade: obtain the vendor’s Universal or Apple silicon build and validate plug-ins, extensions and update behavior.
- Replace: move the workflow to a supported alternative when the current vendor has no credible Apple silicon path.
- Exception: retain the Intel build only with an owner, business justification, vendor case, replacement date and documented risk.
Prioritize identity, security, VPN, endpoint, backup, printing, audio/video, scientific and line-of-business tools. These categories often install drivers, system extensions or helper binaries that are more fragile than the main application. Also test automation scripts and developer toolchains; a script may call an Intel command-line helper even when its graphical app is Universal.

Apple recommends replacing Intel-based apps with Universal or Apple silicon versions for optimal performance and future compatibility. Where you control the build, distribute a Universal binary so one package can run natively on both Apple silicon and Intel Macs during the transition.

Capture the exact application and component versions used in the pilot. Require the application owner to sign off on the workflow, not just the IT team. Apple documents the compatibility boundary and management controls, but does not publish a universal enterprise test matrix; your pilot must supply that operational evidence.

| Option | Best fit | Questions to answer |
|---|---|---|
| Upgrade in place | Most required software is already Universal or has a supported Apple silicon release. | Are drivers, plug-ins, security agents and rollback procedures validated? |
| Replace the Mac | The Intel device is nearing its support or warranty limit, or its workload needs current Apple silicon performance. | Is the replacement model compatible with required displays, peripherals, memory and management controls? |
| Replace the application | The vendor has no supported Apple silicon build or the migration risk is lower than retaining the dependency. | Can data, automation, integrations and user training move before the deadline? |
Make the decision using application coverage, hardware lifecycle, operational risk, deployment control, vendor commitment and user impact. A low-cost application change can still be the wrong choice if it breaks regulated data handling or a critical integration; a hardware refresh can be wasteful if the blocker is an unmaintained plug-in.

- WORKS WITH ANY MAC WITH APPLE SILICON - It pairs automatically with your Mac with Apple silicon so you can get to work right away. See the list of compatible devices above. Requires a Mac with Apple silicon using macOS 11.4 or later.
- ENHANCED TYPING EXPERIENCE - Magic Keyboard delivers a remarkably comfortable and precise typing experience.
- QUICK UNLOCK WITH TOUCH ID - Touch ID gives you a fast, easy, secure way to unlock your Mac and sign in to apps and sites.
- GO WEEKS WITHOUT CHARGING - The incredibly long-lasting internal battery will power your keyboard for about a month or more between charges. (Battery life varies by use.) Comes with a woven USB-C to Lightning Cable that lets you pair and charge by connecting to a USB-C port on your Mac.
Maintain a rollback or reimage path for devices with unresolved dependencies. Publish the decision for every affected application so support staff know whether to install an update, move a user to a replacement workflow or apply an approved exception. For each exception, record an owner, vendor contact, business risk and firm review or replacement date.
Do not design a general-purpose Rosetta strategy for after macOS 27. Apple’s only explicitly described retained functionality is aimed at older, unmaintained games that rely on Intel-based frameworks. Any business application outside that narrow case needs confirmation from its vendor and should be treated as temporary until a supported path exists.
