Apple’s announced Series 12 is tied to a supported iPhone running iOS 27, while Samsung lists its newest Galaxy Watch9 and Watch Ultra2 as incompatible with iOS. Even on Android, some Samsung features require a compatible Galaxy phone. Which watch works with your phone?
Compatibility is the first filter, not a minor specification. A watch that cannot pair with your phone—or loses features you expected—should not make your shortlist.

| Watch | Phone requirement established by the cited source | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Apple Watch Series 12 | Apple says watchOS 27 requires an iPhone 11 or later, or iPhone SE (2nd generation or later), with iOS 27 or later. | Confirm your exact watch and iPhone using Apple’s compatibility and feature availability information. Feature availability varies by model, region, and language. Apple’s Series 12 announcement. |
| Samsung Galaxy Watch9 and Galaxy Watch Ultra2 | Samsung Canada’s table, updated September 11, 2026, lists Android 13.0 or later and at least 1.5 GB RAM; iOS is marked unsupported. | Check the exact watch generation and your country’s support information. Samsung says some models may not work even when baseline requirements are met. Samsung Canada’s Galaxy Watch compatibility table. |
Do not assume the newest Samsung requirements apply to every Galaxy Watch generation. For example, Samsung’s table gives Galaxy Watch8 a different minimum Android version. If you have an Android phone that is not a Samsung Galaxy, a Watch9 or Ultra2 may pair, but that does not guarantee access to every feature.

Samsung features that depend on a Galaxy phone
Samsung says Galaxy Watch9 and Watch Ultra2 work with Android phones, but some personalized health insights and Galaxy AI functions—including Running Coach—require a compatible Galaxy phone. Samsung also describes Health Monitor features such as ECG, irregular-heart-rhythm notifications, and sleep apnea functionality in connection with a compatible Samsung Galaxy phone. Check the feature’s exact device, app, setup, and regional conditions before buying. Samsung’s August 31, 2026 announcement.
Apple Watch remains an iPhone-linked choice
Apple’s Series 12 and watchOS 27 requirements make an iPhone part of the purchase decision. If you are choosing a watch for an Android phone, the current Apple Watch is not the practical option; if you use an iPhone, verify that your handset and software meet the requirements for the exact model you plan to buy.

How the current models differ
Apple announced Apple Watch Series 12 in September 2026. Samsung announced Galaxy Watch9 and Galaxy Watch Ultra2 on August 31, 2026. Samsung positions Watch9 for everyday wellness and Ultra2 for demanding training environments; that is Samsung’s product positioning, not independent evidence that one is better for a particular activity.

What to know about health and fitness features
Health functions are not uniform across models, phones, ages, countries, or software. A feature name on a product page does not by itself establish that it will be available to you.
Apple Watch conditions
Apple says the ECG app is available on Series 4 and later, excluding SE models, and on all Ultra models, subject to age and use limitations. Apple says sleep apnea notifications are available on Series 9 or later, Ultra 2 or later, and SE 3 for specified ages and intended use. Apple also states that Vitals is for wellness purposes only, not medical use. Availability and conditions can vary by device and region. Apple’s Series 12 product notes.

Samsung conditions
Samsung’s comparison-page notes specify age, phone, app, setup, and use limitations for features including ECG, irregular-heart-rhythm notifications, sleep apnea, and cycle tracking. Samsung says its software outputs are not a substitute for medical diagnosis or treatment. Battery life: compare evidence, not just claims
Apple reports “all-day” battery performance for Series 12 based on a 24-hour test using preproduction watches paired with an iPhone and prerelease software. Apple’s stated activity mix included 300 time checks, 90 notifications, 15 minutes of app use, a 60-minute workout with Bluetooth music, and six hours of sleep tracking. Apple notes that actual results vary. This is a manufacturer test protocol, not a head-to-head comparison with Samsung or a guarantee of your own runtime. Apple’s Series 12 announcement.
The available official material does not establish a comparable independent battery test across Series 12, Watch9, and Ultra2. Avoid calling either brand the battery winner on the basis of manufacturer claims alone. Your actual runtime can also depend on how you use the watch and its features.
Price, cellular service, and fit
There is no complete, current, same-region Apple-versus-Samsung price comparison established here. Compare the manufacturers’ local listings on the same day before buying, and make sure you are comparing equivalent versions.
Quick Recap
- Separate GPS/Bluetooth models from cellular models; cellular connectivity may affect the purchase price and require a carrier plan.
- Check the ongoing cost and availability of a compatible cellular plan with your carrier, rather than comparing watch prices alone.
- Compare case size and fit in person if possible, especially when choosing between everyday and training-oriented models.
- For bands, covers, or chargers, confirm exact generation, size, and connector compatibility. Samsung identifies wristbands and covers as Galaxy Watch accessories, but that does not establish universal or cross-brand fit. Samsung’s Galaxy Watch comparison page.
A practical way to choose
- Start with your phone. If you use iPhone, check Apple Watch compatibility; if you use Android, verify the exact Samsung watch’s Android requirement. Samsung lists Watch9 and Ultra2 as unsupported on iOS.
- List the features you will actually use. Check whether each is supported on your exact watch, phone, and in your region; do not assume all health features work on every Android phone.
- Match the model to your routine. Consider Samsung’s everyday-wellness positioning for Watch9 and training-environment positioning for Ultra2, while treating those descriptions as manufacturer guidance rather than comparative test results.
- Compare local total cost. Check the same-day local price for the correct connectivity version, then include any cellular plan you would need.
- Check fit and accessories. Confirm the case works for your wrist and that any band or cover is made for the exact model and size.
