Apple Watch Ultra 4: What’s New, and Who Should Buy or Skip It?

Apple Watch Ultra 4 is an easier recommendation for endurance athletes and outdoor users than for current Ultra 3 owners. Its most meaningful reported changes are more frequent heart-rate readings and longer rated battery life; the case and display are essentially unchanged. At launch, the main reasons to hesitate are the large 49 mm case and the incremental nature of the upgrade.

What’s new on Apple Watch Ultra 4?

Apple announced Apple Watch Ultra 4 on September 9, 2026, with availability scheduled to begin September 18. The headline change is a redesigned Health Sensing System, alongside longer battery ratings and new software features. The external design is much the same as Ultra 3.

More frequent heart-rate and HRV readings

Apple says Ultra 4 measures heart rate every five seconds throughout the day and records heart-rate variability (HRV) more frequently. It also adds a Readiness feature. Apple calls its heart-rate sensing the most accurate in a wearable, citing its own study of more than 1,000 participants; that is a manufacturer claim, not an independently established result in the hands-on coverage.

Longer published battery ratings

Apple advertises up to 45 hours of outdoor workout tracking. Separately, Tom’s Guide reports rated battery life of 50 hours in smartwatch use and 84 hours in Low Power Mode, compared with Ultra 3 ratings of 42 and 72 hours. These are published ratings, not a standardized independent head-to-head battery test. A reviewer’s week of use and 22-mile run are useful individual observations, not a promise of what every wearer will get.

Familiar case and display

Tom’s Guide reports Ultra 4 retains Ultra 3’s 49 × 44 × 12 mm dimensions and 3,000-nit display. Apple describes a titanium case, sapphire display, GPS, workout tracking, and a customizable Action button. Apple rates it IP6X for dust resistance and WR100 for water resistance, including recreational scuba diving to 40 meters.

Five reasons to buy Apple Watch Ultra 4

1. You want more frequent health sensing

Five-second all-day heart-rate readings and more frequent HRV measurements may appeal if you use your watch to follow health and training trends. Readiness adds another signal to consider when planning activity. These measurements can inform decisions, but they do not replace medical advice or establish that every wearer will receive more accurate readings.

2. You need more battery headroom for long outings

The higher published smartwatch and Low Power Mode ratings versus Ultra 3, plus Apple’s up-to-45-hour outdoor workout-tracking claim, make endurance the clearest practical upgrade on paper. The figures describe different use cases, so compare the one that matches your routine rather than treating them as interchangeable.

3. You’ll use the outdoor and sport hardware

The rugged materials, GPS, Action button, and Apple’s stated water and dust ratings suit people who regularly train outdoors or take the watch into demanding environments. The case’s size is part of the trade-off: the same hardware that supports a large display and outdoor controls may feel cumbersome on a smaller wrist.

4. The reported US launch price fits your budget

Tom’s Guide reported a US starting price of $799 in September 2026, matching Ultra 3’s launch price. Price and availability vary by market and can change; check Apple or a local retailer for the current price and configuration before buying.

5. You’re willing to wait for new software features

Live Rewind and Siri Recap were described as later rollouts and were not available for hands-on testing in the September coverage. They may become useful additions, but they are not a sound reason to buy on the assumption that they are already available. Check Apple’s current software information for rollout status.

Two reasons to skip it or wait

1. You already own an Ultra 3

Ultra 4 does not bring a reported case-size or display upgrade. If your Ultra 3’s battery life and sensing meet your needs, the case for switching rests mainly on the higher published battery ratings, more frequent sensing, and Readiness—not a redesign. Consider whether those changes solve a real problem for you before paying for another watch.

2. The large case may not suit you

Ultra 4 comes in a single 49 mm case, and Tom’s Guide’s reviewer found it wore large on an average-sized wrist. Try it on if possible, especially if you have smaller wrists or plan to wear it overnight. If you do not need the Ultra’s rugged, outdoor, or dive capabilities, a smaller Apple Watch model may be a better fit.

Who should buy it?

Ultra 4 makes the most sense if you regularly use a watch for endurance training, outdoor navigation, or water activities and would benefit from longer published battery ratings or more frequent health measurements. It is a less compelling purchase if you mainly want a general-purpose smartwatch, already have Ultra 3, or are unsure the large case will be comfortable.
