Apple lists up to 50 hours of everyday battery life for Ultra 4, compared with up to 42 hours for Ultra 3. Ultra 3 already introduced 5G, two-way satellite communications, a wide-angle LTPO3 display, hypertension notifications, and sleep score.
What changes most from Ultra 3 to Ultra 4?
The clearest upgrade is health and training data. Apple says Ultra 4 measures heart rate every five seconds throughout the day and records heart-rate variability (HRV) up to 24 times more often. It also adds a daily readiness score that draws on recent activity, training load, vitals, and sleep score, updating as new data arrives. Ultra 3’s launch announcement does not identify these sensing changes or a readiness score.

These features are intended to help interpret activity and recovery, not diagnose a health condition. Apple describes Vitals as a wellness feature. Apple also says Ultra 4 has the most accurate heart-rate sensing in a wearable, citing a study with more than 1,000 participants; that is Apple’s claim, not an independently established comparison in the cited announcement. Apple’s Ultra 4 announcement and Ultra 3 announcement describe the respective generations.

How much longer does the battery last?
Apple’s stated everyday maximum rises by eight hours, from up to 42 hours on Ultra 3 to up to 50 hours on Ultra 4. In Low Power Mode, the listed maximum rises from up to 72 to up to 84 hours. These are Apple estimates, not guaranteed runtimes. For Ultra 4, Apple says its everyday battery testing used preproduction hardware and prerelease software in July and August 2026; actual life varies with use, configuration, cellular network, signal strength, and other factors.

| Battery or workout mode | Apple Watch Ultra 4 | Apple Watch Ultra 3 |
|---|---|---|
| Everyday battery | Up to 50 hours (Apple, 2026) | Up to 42 hours (Apple, 2025) |
| Low Power Mode | Up to 84 hours (Apple, 2026) | Up to 72 hours (Apple, 2025) |
| Outdoor workout tracking | Up to 25 hours in Extended Workout with full GPS and heart-rate readings; up to 45 hours in Max Extended Workout (Apple, 2026) | Up to 20 hours in Low Power Mode with full GPS and heart-rate readings (Apple, 2025) |
The workout figures are not directly equivalent. Ultra 4’s 45-hour Max Extended Workout mode enables Low Power Mode and disables some metrics, alerts, and splits. For a long event where full GPS and heart-rate readings matter, the more comparable figures are Ultra 4’s 25 hours in Extended Workout and Ultra 3’s 20 hours in Low Power Mode. Apple’s full conditions are in its Ultra 4 battery notes and Ultra 3 announcement.
What does Ultra 3 already have?
Ultra 3 was itself a substantial update. Its launch announcement introduced features that should not be mistaken for Ultra 4 additions:

- 5G and two-way satellite communications: included among Ultra 3’s connectivity features. Satellite services can depend on location, conditions, and other requirements.
- LTPO3 wide-angle OLED display: Ultra 3 brought thinner borders and an always-on display that refreshes once per second.
- Hypertension notifications and sleep score: both were part of Ultra 3’s announced health and sleep features.
Apple’s Ultra 4 specification and comparison pages do not establish a major display-generation leap over Ultra 3, so the display alone is not a documented reason to upgrade. See Apple’s current watch comparison and Ultra 4 technical specifications for listed specifications.
Should you upgrade from Ultra 3?
Ultra 4 makes more sense if…
- You will use the readiness score and want the higher-frequency heart-rate and HRV data.
- You regularly need more runtime between charges, particularly for multi-day use or long outdoor workouts, and understand the reduced functions in Max Extended Workout mode.
Keeping or choosing Ultra 3 makes more sense if…
- You mainly want the features Ultra 3 already offers: 5G, satellite communications, its LTPO3 display, hypertension notifications, and sleep score.
- The new sensing and readiness features would not change how you train or use the watch.
Whether the upgrade is worth paying for depends on local prices, trade-in value, and whether you will use Ultra 4’s new features. Current prices and trade-in values are not established here, so there is no sound price-based verdict. Satellite and health-feature availability can also vary by location and other conditions; check Apple’s current regional terms before relying on them.
