iFixit found a small but useful battery-repair improvement inside Apple Watch Series 12: a stretch-release adhesive tab lets the battery pull free instead of being pried out. But the display still has to come off first, and iFixit found no repairability-score improvement in Apple Watch Ultra 4. Both watches received 4/10 from iFixit, whose scores are its own teardown-based ratings—not official Apple ratings.
What changed in the Apple Watch Series 12 teardown?
iFixit’s October 6, 2026 teardown found two notable internal changes in Series 12: a stretch-release adhesive tab for the battery and a different display connector. The battery is easier to remove once the watch is open, but opening the watch remains the difficult part of a battery replacement.

A pull tab makes battery removal less forceful
After opening the display and removing the battery connector bracket, iFixit found a stretch-release adhesive tab. Pulling the tab freed the battery, replacing the need to lever it out with a spudger. This is a practical improvement for the removal step, not a change to the overall access route: the display still must be lifted before reaching the battery.
The display connector is simpler, with a repair trade-off
iFixit found a press connector under a bracket where the previous design used a ZIF connector and tape. The new arrangement simplifies the connector itself, but replacing the screen now also requires removing and replacing the battery, according to iFixit. That can turn a display repair into a more involved job.

Is Apple Watch Ultra 4 easier to repair?
Not in the areas highlighted by iFixit. The Ultra 4 still requires opening the display to reach its battery, and iFixit gave it a 4/10 repairability score—the same score it gave the previous three Ultra generations.
The four pentalobe screws on the back are not a shortcut to the battery. iFixit says removing them accesses the sensor assembly and compromises waterproofing. Battery access instead begins at the display, where the perimeter adhesive must be cut.

The capacity figures are teardown measurements in watt-hours, not estimates of how long either watch lasts. Apple’s advertised runtime figures come from different test protocols and should not be compared directly with battery capacity.

What are the risks of opening either watch?
The display-first design creates the main repair hazard: delicate cables run close to the seam, and iFixit warns they can be sliced while cutting through the adhesive. In its reported Ultra 4 procedure, iFixit heated the display for about ten minutes, then used a thin metal pick with depth markings to cut around the perimeter. That describes the teardown procedure, not a guarantee that the display can be opened without damage.

Because the battery is behind the display, a routine battery replacement begins with a delicate disassembly step. A damaged cable or display can make the repair more complicated and potentially more costly. The rear screws do not avoid that risk on Ultra 4.

Not necessarily. iFixit measured both batteries as larger than their cited predecessors, but watt-hours describe stored energy, not real-world runtime. Battery life also depends on workload, configuration, network conditions, and other factors.

Apple says Series 12 and Ultra 4 measure heart rate every five seconds and HRV as often as every five minutes. Apple’s published battery-life claims are based on separate tests: a 50-hour multiday test for Ultra 4 and a 24-hour all-day test for Series 12. Apple says those protocols use preproduction products and that results vary with use, configuration, network, and other conditions. The figures are therefore not a direct comparison between the watches or a prediction for every owner.

iFixit’s 4/10 scores are its own repairability ratings based on the teardown, not Apple ratings or a standardized regulatory measure. For context, iFixit cites a 9/10 score for Pixel Watch 5 and describes its display access as using two Torx screws and a gasket. That is iFixit’s comparison of repair approaches, not a like-for-like assessment of the watches’ overall capabilities.
iFixit reported Apple’s estimated battery repair price as $99 for a Series 12 GPS + Cellular model, with $599 listed for other service for that configuration. These are reported estimates for that specific configuration, not a universal price list; check Apple’s current Apple Watch service options for the device and region before arranging service.
