For the current watchOS 27 release, the phone requirement is higher: you need an iPhone 11 or newer, or an iPhone SE (2nd generation or newer), running iOS 27.
Compatibility at a glance
There are two compatibility questions to separate. The first is whether an iPhone can pair with an Apple Watch Series 10 under Apple’s model-level requirements. The second is whether that phone can install a particular watchOS release, such as watchOS 27. Those requirements can change between watchOS versions.

| What you want to check | Apple’s requirement | Practical result |
|---|---|---|
| Series 10 baseline iPhone | iPhone XS or later; Apple’s technical specifications explicitly include iPhone SE (2nd generation or later) | The exact iPhone model must be eligible; simply having an iPhone app is not enough. |
| Series 10 baseline iOS | iOS 18 or later | Update the eligible iPhone to iOS 18 or a newer supported version before pairing. |
| Series 10 baseline watchOS | watchOS 11 or later | This is the model’s compatibility line, not a guarantee that every eligible phone can install every later release. |
| watchOS 27 on Series 10 | iPhone 11 or later, or iPhone SE (2nd generation or later), running iOS 27 | Series 10 is supported, but an iPhone XS-generation phone does not meet the stated phone requirement for this release. |
Apple’s Apple Watch and iPhone compatibility page, published September 17, 2026, lists Series 10 with iPhone XS or later, iOS 18 or later, and watchOS 11 or later. Apple repeats the minimum iPhone and iOS versions in the Series 10 technical specifications. The watchOS 27 requirements page gives the newer phone and operating-system threshold for that specific release.

Which iPhones work with Apple Watch Series 10?
iPhone XS or newer for the baseline pairing requirement
For ordinary Series 10 compatibility, Apple’s minimum is an iPhone XS or later running iOS 18 or later. “Later” refers to the iPhone model generation, so identify the model in Settings rather than relying on the phone’s screen size, case design, or the fact that it can install an Apple Watch app.

- Open Settings on the iPhone.
- Tap General, then About.
- Read Model Name and iOS Version.
- Compare the model with Apple’s current compatibility table and confirm that the installed iOS version is at least 18.
If the phone is older than the XS generation, it falls outside the stated baseline even if it can run other recent Apple apps. If the model is eligible but still on an older iOS release, update iOS first; the hardware requirement and the software requirement both have to be met.
iPhone SE (2nd generation or later) is specifically included
Apple’s Series 10 specifications explicitly name iPhone SE (2nd generation or later), provided the phone runs iOS 18 or later. This matters because the SE line does not follow the same numbering as the main iPhone range. Check the generation in Settings > General > About instead of assuming every iPhone SE has the same support.
Do not infer eligibility from an iPhone’s release year
Two phones released around the same time can have different support boundaries, and an iPhone that can open a companion app may still fail the pairing or update check. Use the exact model name and Apple’s published table. Apple also warns that particular features, apps, and services may vary by region and language, so successful pairing does not promise identical feature availability everywhere.

What iOS version does Series 10 require?
The baseline is iOS 18 or later on the iPhone. That requirement applies alongside the iPhone XS-or-newer model requirement and is repeated in Apple’s Series 10 technical specifications. A qualifying model on iOS 17, or any earlier release, is not ready for the stated Series 10 setup until it can be updated to iOS 18 or newer.

Check and update iOS before pairing
- Connect the iPhone to power or ensure it has sufficient battery.
- Go to Settings > General > Software Update.
- Install the newest iOS version Apple offers for that exact iPhone.
- Return to Settings > General > About and verify the version number before starting Watch setup.
If Software Update offers no iOS 18-or-newer release, the phone may be too old for Series 10’s baseline requirement, regardless of available storage or whether the Watch app is present.
Which watchOS versions does Series 10 support?
watchOS 11 or later is the model-level line
Apple’s compatibility table lists Apple Watch Series 10 with watchOS 11 or later. The same page states that updating to watchOS 11 requires an iPhone XS or later with iOS 18 or later. This identifies the starting software generation for the watch model; it should not be read as a permanent phone requirement for every future watchOS update.
watchOS 27 introduces a higher iPhone threshold
Apple’s watchOS 27 page lists Series 10 among the supported watch models but requires an iPhone 11 or later, or an iPhone SE (2nd generation or later), running iOS 27. Therefore, an iPhone XS that satisfies the Series 10 and watchOS 11 baseline does not satisfy the stated phone requirement for watchOS 27. The same distinction applies to other phones from the XS-era generation: check the requirement for the release you intend to install rather than assuming “watchOS 11 or later” means every later version works with the original minimum iPhone.
| Series 10 owner’s setup | Baseline Series 10 / watchOS 11 check | watchOS 27 check |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone XS or newer, not an SE | Eligible when running iOS 18 or later | Eligible only if the model is iPhone 11 or later and it can run iOS 27 |
| iPhone SE (2nd generation or newer) | Eligible when running iOS 18 or later | Meets the stated model category; it must also run iOS 27 |
| Older iPhone than the XS baseline | Does not meet Apple’s stated Series 10 requirement | Does not meet the watchOS 27 requirement |
The table is a decision aid, not a substitute for Apple’s live requirements. Apple can change the iPhone or iOS minimum for a later watchOS release, so verify the release-specific page when a new update appears.

How to check whether your setup can be updated
- Identify the iPhone. In Settings > General > About, record the Model Name.
- Check the installed iOS. In the same screen, record the iOS Version. For baseline Series 10 use, it must be 18 or later.
- Choose the watchOS target. If you only need initial pairing or watchOS 11-level support, use the baseline row. If you want watchOS 27, apply its iPhone 11-or-newer/SE 2-or-newer and iOS 27 requirements.
- Update the iPhone first. Use Settings > General > Software Update and install the newest release offered for the phone.
- Start Watch setup. Open the Watch app on the iPhone and follow the pairing prompts. The update screen will enforce the requirements for the watchOS version it offers.
- Recheck after a failed update. Confirm the exact model, available iOS version, and selected watchOS release. A phone can pass the baseline check yet fail a newer watchOS check.
Keep the iPhone and Watch near each other, connected to power as requested by the setup screens, and allow adequate storage for updates. Those practical conditions can affect an installation, but they do not change Apple’s model and operating-system minimums.
Common compatibility mistakes and what they mean
“My iPhone runs the Watch app, so it must be compatible”
The app’s presence is not the deciding test. Apple’s published requirements are based on the exact iPhone model and its iOS version. Verify both values in Settings and compare them with the relevant Apple page.
“Series 10 supports watchOS 11 or later, so my XS can install watchOS 27”
“Or later” describes the watchOS versions listed for the model, while the watchOS 27 page separately sets a newer iPhone requirement. An iPhone XS can meet the baseline pairing and watchOS 11 conditions if it runs iOS 18, yet fail the stated watchOS 27 phone requirement.

“All features should appear after pairing”
Apple notes that some features, apps, and services may not be available in every region or language. A compatible phone and watch can therefore pair successfully while showing a different feature set from one country or language to another.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Regular pairing versus family setup
The requirements above describe ordinary pairing of the Series 10 with the owner’s iPhone. Apple maintains separate requirements for setting up a watch for a family member through its family setup option. If the Watch will be managed from another person’s iPhone, follow Apple’s family-setup guidance instead of assuming the ordinary pairing table is sufficient; the phone, account, cellular, and regional conditions can differ.
Examples
iPhone XS on iOS 18
This combination meets the baseline Series 10 requirement and the stated watchOS 11 update requirement. It does not meet the iPhone model requirement Apple lists for watchOS 27, which starts at iPhone 11 or the second-generation-or-newer SE.

iPhone 11 on iOS 27
This setup meets the phone and operating-system thresholds Apple lists for watchOS 27, and Series 10 appears in that release’s supported-watch list. The update can still be subject to normal storage, power, network, and on-screen setup checks.

iPhone SE (2nd generation) on iOS 18
This meets the Series 10 baseline because Apple explicitly includes that SE generation. To move to watchOS 27, the phone must also be capable of and updated to iOS 27.
An older iPhone that cannot install iOS 18
It fails the baseline software requirement even if the owner has a Series 10 and can download related apps. There is no supported workaround that removes Apple’s iOS minimum.
Which Apple page should you use?
- Use Apple’s compatibility table to check the Series 10 baseline and the iPhone requirement attached to a listed watchOS generation.
- Use the Series 10 technical specifications to confirm the explicit inclusion of iPhone SE (2nd generation or later), plus the iOS 18 minimum.
- Use the specific watchOS release page when deciding whether to install watchOS 27 or a later version, because its iPhone requirement may be higher than the model’s original baseline.
Check the release-specific page immediately before updating. That single step prevents the most common mistake: treating Series 10’s original pairing minimum as a permanent requirement for every future watchOS release.
