If your Apple Watch repeatedly says “Sign in to complete purchase”, the most common cause is an app downloaded with a different Apple Account. The watch is usually trying to install or update that app’s watch version—not making an unknown purchase on its own. Do not enter an unfamiliar password just to dismiss the alert. First identify the account and app involved, then reinstall the app while signed in to the Apple Account you use now.
What the alert means
Apple ties every App Store purchase and download to the Apple Account used to obtain it. That association remains when you change accounts, restore an iPhone or watch, inherit apps from a family member, or keep apps installed from an earlier device. Purchases cannot be transferred to another Apple Account (Apple’s App Store guide).
When the paired iPhone or watch attempts to install or update a compatible watch app, Apple may request the password for the original account. Common triggers include:
- A pending automatic watch-app installation.
- An update obtained with an old personal account.
- An app installed by a spouse, parent, child, or previous owner.
- A mismatch between the account used for iCloud and the account used for App Store purchases.
- A watch restored from a backup containing apps tied to another account.
- A Family Sharing, hidden-purchase, region, or compatibility issue.
A legitimate purchase made directly on the watch can also require confirmation. Apple says watch purchases use the payment method associated with the signed-in account and require side-button confirmation (Apple Watch App Store instructions). Therefore, the alert alone does not prove that a charge occurred. A recurring prompt that appears without an action you initiated is more consistent with an app or account synchronization problem.

Check which account Apple is requesting
Before changing anything, note the email address or account name shown in the prompt. Classify it:
- Your current account: authenticate only if you just started the download, purchase, or update. Otherwise, investigate pending apps first.
- An old account you still own: do not assume entering its password will migrate the app. It only authorizes that account’s download or update.
- A family member’s or former owner’s account: do not use the password unless that person is intentionally authorizing the action. Remove and reinstall the app under the current account, or check whether Family Sharing makes it available.
- Completely unfamiliar: stop and investigate. The prompt is not evidence of a purchase, but an actual unfamiliar transaction should be reviewed in purchase history and with Apple Support.
If an app is missing from your current purchase history, Apple says it may have been obtained with a different Apple Account (Apple’s purchase-history guidance).
Fastest current fix: stop automatic watch-app installation
Apple Watch normally installs compatible iPhone apps automatically. Disable that behavior temporarily so the same app does not repeatedly trigger the password request.

- On the paired iPhone, open the Watch app.
- Tap My Watch.
- Tap General.
- Turn off Automatic App Install.
- Return to My Watch and scroll to Available Apps.
- Look for an app with an Install button, a progress indicator, or an installation that never completes.
- On the iPhone, delete the suspected app.
- Download it again from the App Store while signed in to the intended current Apple Account.
- If automatic installation remains off, tap Install beside the app in Available Apps.
- After the prompt stops, re-enable Automatic App Install if you want it.
These labels are used in Apple’s current Watch guide, although surrounding layout can vary by iOS, watchOS, region, and Watch app version (Apple Watch app-download guide). Removing and reinstalling the suspected app is a practical workaround reported by macReports and Apple Community users, rather than a universal Apple-documented diagnosis (macReports; Apple Community).

Update apps one at a time
- Open App Store on the Apple Watch.
- Scroll to the bottom and tap Account.
- Tap Updates.
- Update one app, then wait to see whether the sign-in prompt returns.
- Repeat with the next app rather than choosing Update All.
The app immediately preceding the prompt is the likely account mismatch. Apple documents the watch’s Account and App Store areas; updating individually is a diagnostic technique described by Apple Community users (Apple Watch guide; Apple Community report).
Check purchased apps on the watch
- Open App Store on the watch.
- Scroll down, tap Account, then tap Purchased.
- Find the app and redownload it if it belongs to the current account.

Check purchase history on the iPhone
- Open App Store.
- Tap your account picture or My Account.
- Tap Apps & Purchase History.
- Open Purchase History or Your Apps and search for the app.
- Redownload it if it is owned by the current account.
Apple’s iPhone instructions are available at Apple Support. An absent app may belong to another account, be hidden, unavailable in your region, or no longer support your device. Hidden purchases can also be managed separately (Apple’s hidden-purchase and Family Sharing guidance).
Reinstall the app without losing more than expected
Delete the app from the iPhone, remove its watch version if it remains, and install it again from the App Store under the intended account. Apple says deleting an app from the iPhone also removes it from Apple Watch (Apple app-deletion guidance).
Check the app’s own backup or synchronization settings first. Locally stored, unsynced data may be lost when an app is deleted. A free redownload normally requires no second payment when the same account originally obtained the app; an app bought under a different account may require that account or a new purchase, because purchases do not transfer (Apple App Store guide).

Family Sharing and multiple-account cases
Family Sharing can make eligible purchases available to other members, but eligibility depends on the app, purchase type, account setup, and region. Confirm that the app is actually shared before relying on it. If the prompt names a relative’s account, the safest choices are for that person to manage the download or for you to remove the app and install a version owned by your account.
If you use one account for iCloud and another for media purchases, verify which account the App Store is using. A former account can remain attached to apps even after the phone’s primary account changes. A used watch may also retain apps from its previous owner; confirm ownership and Activation Lock before erasing or pairing it.
Secondary troubleshooting
Restart and update
- Restart both the iPhone and Apple Watch.
- Keep them nearby, connected, and sufficiently charged.
- Install available iOS and watchOS updates.
- Retry the app installation after both devices restart.
Sign out only when the current account is confirmed
Some Apple Community users report that signing out and back in refreshes stale authentication, but it is not a first-line fix. Sign-out can affect synchronized services and may require your password, verification codes, and reauthentication. Attempt it only when you know the correct account credentials and understand what data is synchronized. Prefer refreshing the relevant App Store or media-purchase sign-in rather than casually signing out of iCloud (Apple Community report).

When to contact Apple instead of resetting the watch
Contact Apple Support if the prompt persists after app cleanup and individual updates, names an account unrelated to you, appears during setup or pairing, or remains after all third-party apps are removed. Tell support the exact account identifier shown and whether the issue began after restoring, changing accounts, pairing, or updating watchOS. Ask them to check for a stuck purchase, account association, or installation record.
Unpairing, erasing, and repairing the watch can be appropriate when several apps are affected or a restoration is corrupted, but it is disruptive and should be a last resort. Follow Apple’s current erase and unpair instructions for your iOS and watchOS versions rather than relying on old menu paths. If purchase history shows an actual unfamiliar charge—not merely a password prompt—address the transaction and account security with Apple immediately.
