Apple says its new Apple Watch Audio Intelligence features do not create or store audio recordings. It says raw audio is processed inside a hardware-isolated Secure Exclave and immediately deleted. That is Apple’s description of the design, not an independent audit—and it does not describe every Apple feature that handles speech. Siri and Dictation can follow different processing paths, including Apple servers, with separate settings and opt-in controls.
What Apple says its new Watch features do with audio
Apple’s September 2026 announcement describes three Audio Intelligence features for Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4, which use the S11 chip with Secure Exclave. Apple describes Secure Exclave as a hardware-isolated compartment for processing audio. It says raw audio is inaccessible to the operating system, apps, the user, and Apple, and is immediately deleted. Apple also says these features do not identify or attribute speakers. Apple’s September 2026 announcement is the source for those design claims; no independent technical assessment of this Watch implementation is established here.

Sound Recognition
Sound Recognition can alert users who are deaf or hard of hearing to sounds such as sirens, alarms, doorbells, or a baby crying, including when the iPhone is not with them.

Live Rewind
After a double press of the Digital Crown, Live Rewind can show a text snippet of the previous 15 seconds of conversation. A snippet is retained text, not the same thing as retaining the raw audio recording. Apple says Live Rewind snippets are end-to-end encrypted in the Siri app with iCloud syncing and are not accessible to Apple.

Siri Recap
When enabled, Siri Recap can create a title and key points from a conversation for later review. Apple describes the result as a short, high-level summary rather than a transcript, designed to exclude sensitive information such as financial information or government-assigned identifiers. Apple says summaries are end-to-end encrypted in the Siri app with iCloud syncing and are not accessible to Apple.
What can remain after audio is processed
Apple’s claims distinguish the temporary raw audio used for processing from the text outputs Live Rewind and Siri Recap can produce. The features may leave a snippet or summary for the user to review, even though Apple says they do not create or store audio recordings. That distinction matters: “no audio recording” does not mean “no information from a conversation can persist.”

Apple says users choose whether to enable each feature and can choose exactly where and when Siri Recap takes notes. Siri Recap can also be turned off through Control Center. When Live Rewind is active, Apple says the Watch plays an audible chime even if it is on silent and shows a full-display animation and microphone indicator. These controls and notices are part of Apple’s stated design, not proof of an independent privacy audit.

The Secure Exclave claims for the new Watch Audio Intelligence features should not be carried over to Siri or Dictation. Apple says a device’s settings indicate whether speech is processed on device; otherwise Siri audio may be sent to Apple servers. Apple says audio is not stored by default unless the user opts in to the relevant improvement setting. The actual route depends on the feature, device, and settings. Apple’s separate Improve Siri & Apple Intelligence notice says opting in can cover audio and text interactions with Siri, Dictation, and Translate, including transcripts, responses, and related request data. Apple says the information may be used to improve products and models; identifiers are random and device-generated rather than tied to an Apple Account, and a subset may be reviewed by Apple employees. Those terms apply to the opt-in program, not by default to every Watch feature. Review Apple’s current Improve Siri & Apple Intelligence notice for its stated details.
Private Cloud Compute is not the route for every audio feature
Apple says Apple Intelligence assesses whether a request can be handled on device or requires Private Cloud Compute (PCC). For requests handled by PCC, Apple says personal data is not stored there or made accessible to Apple; it also says outside experts can inspect the server software. This is Apple’s description of PCC, not a claim that all speech or audio processing happens locally or uses PCC. See Apple’s June 2026 announcement and its PCC security documentation.

Other Apple audio features should not be lumped in
Apple also announced Apple Music AutoMix, which analyzes audio to create transitions between songs, and Enhance Dialogue in Apple Podcasts, which isolates voices. The announcement does not establish that these features use the Watch’s Secure Exclave or have the same retention and privacy behavior. Their existence alone is not evidence that conversations are being recorded, but the Watch-specific claims do not establish how these other features process audio. Apple’s feature announcement describes them separately.
How to check speech and privacy settings
-
On your device, check Siri and Keyboard settings for whether speech is processed on device. Apple says the device indicates this; labels and paths can vary by software version. Consult Apple’s Siri and Dictation notice for the distinction between on-device handling and server processing.

Availability is not universal
Apple names Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4 for its Watch Audio Intelligence announcement, but says features may not be available in every region or language. Its September announcement says Live Rewind and Siri Recap arrive in beta later in 2026; that is not a statement that they are generally available. Apple’s June announcement lists iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS 27, watchOS 27, and visionOS 27 among supported software generations and says hardware support varies. Check Apple’s September announcement and June announcement for the availability information Apple provides.
