No. A Samsung phone cannot directly pair with or set up an Apple Watch. Apple’s documented setup process requires an iPhone and the Apple Watch app. If you want to use an Apple Watch, first check that the iPhone you can use meets the requirements for your exact watch model.
Why an Apple Watch won’t pair directly with a Samsung phone
Apple’s setup instructions require you to pair the watch with an iPhone using the Apple Watch app. A Samsung Android phone is not a supported replacement for that setup phone. Apple describes the requirement plainly in its Apple Watch User Guide: “To use your Apple Watch, you need to pair it with your iPhone.”

This applies to the documented setup route, including “Set Up for a Family Member”: that option is started from an iPhone, not a Samsung phone. Cellular service does not remove the iPhone setup requirement.

There is no single minimum iPhone requirement that applies to every Apple Watch generation. Apple’s compatibility table lists the compatible iPhone, iOS, and watchOS versions for each model. For example, Apple lists:

Older generations have different requirements. Before buying a watch or borrowing an iPhone for setup, check the exact model and its current software against Apple’s table; do not assume that a phone compatible with one generation will work with another.
What Apple Watch setup requires
Apple’s setup directions, published September 14, 2026, use an unlocked, compatible iPhone. Turn on Bluetooth and connect the iPhone to Wi-Fi or cellular, then bring it near the watch and follow the prompts in the Apple Watch app. You can pair by centering the watch face in the iPhone camera viewfinder, or choose manual pairing if the camera method does not work. If the watch has been used before
If a watch face appears when you try to start setup, Apple says the watch is already paired with an iPhone and must be erased before it can be set up again. A previously owned watch may also have Activation Lock enabled. In that case, setup requires the Apple Account credentials linked to the watch or help from its previous owner; erasing the watch alone does not remove that protection.
Why cellular service is not a workaround
Apple describes cellular activation as a step performed during or after setup through the iPhone’s Apple Watch app. For ordinary setup, the iPhone and watch must use the same carrier. Apple notes a Family Sharing exception, and cellular service is not available in every country or region. Cellular can provide a supported watch with a network connection, but it does not let a Samsung phone perform Apple Watch setup. Details are in the Apple Watch User Guide.

Choose the route that fits your phone
- Keeping your Samsung phone: look for a smartwatch whose compatibility is explicitly documented for your Samsung phone and the features you want. Check notifications, health functions, cellular support, and any required app or account before choosing a model.
- Choosing an Apple Watch: arrange access to a compatible iPhone that meets the requirement for that watch generation. Apple’s setup instructions establish the iPhone requirement, but they do not provide a feature-by-feature account of how a previously configured Apple Watch works alongside a Samsung phone. Don’t assume either that every function will stop or that all functions will continue normally after a phone change.
