Apple Watch offers an out-of-warranty battery service, which is a provider repair rather than a user-swappable battery.

Small wireless devices use the word replaceable in several different ways. A product may allow the owner to open it and install a listed part, may be repairable only by an authorized service provider, or may be technically openable but have no parts or instructions. Those are materially different ownership experiences.

Owner replacement
Owner replacement means the manufacturer publishes a procedure, sells or identifies a compatible battery, and designs the enclosure so the work can be completed without destroying the device. Fairbuds fit this definition most closely in the evidence available here. The official repair page links to separate guides for the individual earbud batteries and the charging-case battery, gives estimated times, and directs owners to spare parts.
Service replacement
Service replacement means you send or take the device to a provider. Apple states that out-of-warranty Apple Watch battery service is available, but its price and terms vary. The existence of that service does not tell you that the watch can be safely opened at home or that Apple will sell the battery as a consumer part.
Technical access without a supported repair
A device can be opened by a specialist and still be a poor repair choice if the battery is glued in, the enclosure is damaged during access, or no replacement parts are supplied. iFixit’s AirPods Pro comparison entry illustrates this distinction: it describes the batteries as sealed in, says accessing components causes damage, and lists no official replacement parts or repair instructions.
Fairphone Fairbuds: the strongest documented AirPods alternative
Fairphone’s Fairbuds are the only earbuds in this comparison with a manufacturer-described path for replacing both the earbud batteries and the charging-case battery. That combination matters because a case with a worn battery can make otherwise healthy earbuds unusable; replacing only the cells in the buds would not solve that bottleneck.
How the Fairbuds repair design works
In each earbud, the battery sits in a rotating tray. Fairphone’s walkthrough shows the tray being turned to access the cell, so the procedure requires care and correct alignment rather than simply pulling out a cartridge. The case battery is reached by removing a screw and opening the shell. Fairphone also identifies the charging core as a separately replaceable part.

The official repair page estimates roughly five to 10 minutes for an earbud-battery replacement and about two minutes for a charging-case battery replacement. These are Fairphone’s guide estimates, not an independent timing test. Read the applicable guide for your exact Fairbuds generation before starting, because a part that fits one revision may not fit another.
What parts and instructions are available
Fairphone’s repair information covers replacement earbud batteries, the charging-case battery, the case core and a single replacement earbud. The walkthrough explains that a replacement single bud must be ordered and paired with the existing set. Battery capacity and endurance claims
Fairphone lists a 45 mAh battery capacity for the earbuds and rates the cells for 500 charge/discharge cycles before reaching 80% remaining capacity. Those are manufacturer-published specifications, not independent comparative measurements. Fairphone also describes a controlled playback test using continuous playback at 50% volume with a 1 kHz sine wave. Real listening time varies with codec, volume, call use, temperature and age, so do not treat that test setup as a universal runtime promise. Water and sweat limits
The earbuds carry an IP54 rating, according to Fairphone. The charging case does not have that rating, and Fairphone says the earbuds are not designed for swimming. Keep the case out of rain and splashes, dry the buds before placing them in the case, and do not assume that opening the enclosure for a battery repair preserves its original protection if a seal is not correctly reinstalled.

- Identify whether you are replacing one earbud battery or the charging-case battery, then obtain the matching official part for your Fairbuds generation.
- Read the relevant guide on the Fairphone repairs page before opening anything. Organize the small parts so the rotating tray, screws and covers cannot be lost.
- For an earbud, follow the guide to expose the rotating battery tray. Turn the tray as instructed, remove the old cell without forcing the mechanism, and install the replacement in the specified orientation.
- Reassemble the earbud and check that the tray and outer cover sit flush. A cover that does not close correctly is a reason to stop and inspect alignment rather than press harder.
- For the case, remove the specified screw, open the shell carefully, and replace the case battery or the separate charging core as applicable. Refit the shell and screw before charging.
- Charge the repaired component, test pairing and playback, and confirm that the case charges each bud. If you replaced a single earbud, complete the pairing process described in Fairphone’s walkthrough.
The short estimated times do not eliminate the need for careful handling. A damaged tray, misplaced screw or incorrectly seated battery can turn a routine replacement into a separate repair.
How Fairbuds compare with AirPods Pro repairability
AirPods Pro remain a useful reference point because many buyers are replacing an aging pair whose batteries no longer last a full commute. In iFixit’s wireless-earbud comparison, the AirPods Pro entry is described as not designed to be serviced: component access causes damage, the batteries are sealed in, and no official replacement parts or repair instructions are listed. That assessment applies to the entry shown on iFixit’s comparison page, not automatically to every current AirPods model.
Fairbuds take the opposite approach by exposing a documented route for both bud and case batteries. The trade-off is a less sealed design: the case has no stated water-resistance rating, and the earbud repair uses a small rotating tray that still demands careful work. If your priority is extending ownership with a part you can install, Fairbuds have substantially stronger documented support. If your priority is preserving the original sealed enclosure and you expect to use a provider for any battery work, the two ownership models are different rather than directly interchangeable.

Smartwatch alternatives: what is verified and what remains uncertain
Google Pixel Watch 4: promising report, incomplete proof
TechRadar reports that iFixit gave Google Pixel Watch 4 a 9/10 repairability score and described its battery as replaceable. That is encouraging for buyers looking beyond Apple Watch, but it does not answer the questions that determine whether an owner can realistically keep the watch for many years.
- It has not been established here that the owner can purchase the battery and replace it without a service provider.
- Official Google parts listings and step-by-step consumer instructions have not been verified.
- Authorized repair locations, pricing and parts availability by country have not been established.
- The report does not by itself show whether opening the watch preserves water resistance or warranty coverage.

Apple Watch: a supported service route, not a DIY promise
Apple documents out-of-warranty battery service for Apple Watch. Prices and terms vary, so check the current service page and your region before making a decision. This route is useful if you want the manufacturer to handle the battery, but it should not be presented as a user-replaceable design.
Apple also says the watch battery is designed to retain up to 80% of its original capacity at 1,000 complete charge cycles. That is Apple’s specification, not an independently measured comparison. Why there is no definitive smartwatch winner in this guide
The available evidence supports a firm earbud recommendation but not a fully verified smartwatch equivalent. A high repairability score can include screen, fastener or modular-component advantages without proving that a replacement battery is sold directly to owners. For a watch, confirm all of the following before purchase:

- Whether the manufacturer publishes a procedure detailed enough for your skill level.
Choosing by your repair priorities
Choose Fairbuds when battery longevity is the deciding factor
Fairbuds are the straightforward choice when you want documented owner repair, replaceable cells in both the earbuds and case, and access to a single replacement earbud. They are especially suitable if you keep devices for several years and are comfortable following a careful illustrated procedure. Accept the IP54-versus-no-rating distinction between buds and case, and budget time for a small mechanical repair rather than expecting a snap-in cartridge.
Choose a service-supported watch when you do not want to open it
If you prefer not to handle miniature parts, Apple Watch’s out-of-warranty battery service is a clear provider option. Ask for the current price, turnaround and warranty terms in your region. A service path can be the better practical choice even when a device is technically repairable, because a watch’s seals and display are less forgiving than an earbud tray.
Consider Pixel Watch 4 only after verifying the local repair path
Pixel Watch 4 deserves consideration if independent repairability is important, but make the purchase conditional on primary confirmation. Check Google’s support pages, authorized-service directory and parts information for your country. If those sources do not say who replaces the battery, which part is supplied and what the repair costs, treat the 9/10 score as a useful signal rather than a guarantee.
Before ordering: a repairability checklist
- Identify the exact generation. Earbud and watch parts are not automatically cross-compatible across revisions.
- Check both device and case. A replaceable earbud battery does not help if the charging case has a sealed, failing cell.
- Read the official procedure first. Confirm the estimated time, required fasteners and any pairing step.
- Verify regional stock. Fairphone’s guides direct owners to spare parts, but inventory and delivery differ by country.
- Separate manufacturer figures from independent tests. Fairphone’s 45 mAh, 500-cycle and playback figures and Apple’s 1,000-cycle specification are published claims, not like-for-like laboratory comparisons.
- Plan for water protection. Fairbuds’ IP54 rating applies to the earbuds, not the case; any watch repair may require a provider to restore or test seals.
- Price the whole ownership path. Include replacement cells, shipping, provider labor where applicable and the possibility of a single lost or damaged earbud.
Bottom line for buyers in 2026
Fairphone Fairbuds are the best-supported AirPods alternative in this comparison for people who specifically want replaceable batteries. Fairphone documents repairs for both individual buds and the charging case, provides compatible parts and explains the mechanical steps; iFixit independently recognizes the modular approach. The design still has limits: the case is not rated for water resistance, and the battery tray needs careful handling.
There is no equally confirmed smartwatch recommendation here. Apple Watch has a manufacturer battery-service route, while Pixel Watch 4 has a promising but not yet fully verified repairability report. Treat those as service or provisional options, respectively, until primary, region-specific information confirms who can replace the battery and under what terms.
