Apple Wallet IDs: The Next States—The Confirmed List and What Comes Next

Apple Wallet IDs: The Next States are not yet known: Apple’s current official list shows 14 U.S. states plus Puerto Rico, but Apple has not named or dated the next jurisdiction. Rollout is continuing, while older announcements for states such as Connecticut, Kentucky, Oklahoma, and Utah do not confirm the next launch.

The most useful distinction is between a live state-issued credential and Apple’s separate passport-derived Digital ID. A resident needs a participating state or territory for the first option; an eligible holder of an unexpired U.S. passport can create the second option without waiting for a state-issued Wallet launch.

Key takeaways

  • Apple’s current official list contains 14 U.S. states plus Puerto Rico, including Arizona, California, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Maryland, Ohio, and West Virginia.
  • Apple has not named or dated the next state, so Connecticut, Kentucky, Oklahoma, Utah, Mississippi, or another previously discussed jurisdiction cannot be called a confirmed upcoming launch.
  • State-issued licenses and IDs require residency in a participating jurisdiction, a supported credential, compatible Apple hardware, and approval through the issuing authority’s verification process.
  • Eligible people with an unexpired U.S. passport can create a separate passport-derived Digital ID, even when their state is not on Apple’s state-issued ID list.
  • Apple Wallet IDs work only at participating checkpoints, businesses, venues, apps, websites, and other supported readers; a digital credential is not universally accepted.

Which states currently support Apple Wallet IDs?

Apple’s current ID in Wallet availability list names 14 states and Puerto Rico. The list represents jurisdictions where residents can currently add and use a state-issued driver’s license or state ID under specified conditions, not states that have merely expressed interest.

Apple’s list should be treated as the live source for this 2026 update. Apple’s January 2026 services update reported availability in 13 U.S. states and Puerto Rico after Illinois, Montana, North Dakota, and West Virginia were enabled during the preceding year; Apple’s current product page now lists 14 states and Puerto Rico. The current product page is therefore the better source for the present count.

Are the next Apple Wallet states confirmed?

No. Apple’s current public ID in Wallet material says that more jurisdictions are on the way, but Apple has not published a dated, named schedule identifying the next state.

Apple’s rollout history shows why an old announcement cannot be treated as a launch calendar. Participation announcements describe intended adoption, while live availability requires the jurisdiction’s credential and verification process to become operational. Apple’s official list is the distinction that matters to residents trying to add an ID today.

Date What Apple reported What the report does—and does not—prove
September 2021 Apple announced eight initial states: Arizona, Connecticut, Georgia, Iowa, Kentucky, Maryland, Oklahoma, and Utah. The announcement established intended participation, not immediate or scheduled live availability for every named state.
March 2022 Arizona became the first state to launch the feature. Arizona’s launch demonstrated that state participation and actual deployment were separate milestones.
September 2024 Apple reported seven states live—Arizona, Colorado, Georgia, Maryland, Hawaii, Ohio, and California—and said Montana, New Mexico, and West Virginia had signed on. “Signed on” was not the same as live at the time of the announcement; all three are now on Apple’s current live list.
January 2026 Apple reported 13 U.S. states and Puerto Rico in a services update. The later current Apple list, rather than the older company summary, should be used for the present total.

Connecticut, Kentucky, Oklahoma, Utah, Mississippi, and any other jurisdiction mentioned in older coverage should not be labeled the next confirmed launch without a new announcement from Apple or the relevant state agency. The available evidence supports continuing expansion, but not a reliable launch order.

What are the two types of IDs in Apple Wallet?

“IDs in Apple Wallet” covers two different U.S. identity products: a state-issued driver’s license or state ID, and a passport-derived Digital ID. The two products have different eligibility rules, source documents, and limitations.

Feature State-issued license or state ID Passport-derived Digital ID
Source document A participating state or territory driver’s license or state ID An authentic, unexpired U.S. passport
Who can create it A resident of a jurisdiction on Apple’s live list An eligible U.S. passport holder who meets Apple’s age, account, device, and region requirements
Does state participation matter? Yes. The issuing jurisdiction must support the feature. No state-issued Wallet launch is required for the passport-derived path, although supported acceptance locations are still required.
Verification The user scans the front and back of the credential, completes identity checks, and submits the information to the issuing authority for approval. The user verifies the passport and identity through Apple’s setup process.
Typical uses Select TSA checkpoints, businesses, venues, Apple Stores, apps, and websites Select TSA checkpoints for domestic travel, plus supported apps and online services
Important limitation Acceptance is selective and depends on the location, reader, app, and applicable rules. The Digital ID is not a government-issued digital passport, cannot replace the physical passport for international travel, and cannot be used for international border crossing.

How does the state-issued Apple Wallet ID rollout work?

A state-issued Apple Wallet ID is created from an existing physical credential and must be approved by the issuing authority. The user does not simply photograph a license and receive an automatically valid replacement.

  1. Confirm that the jurisdiction is live. Check Apple’s current list rather than relying on a state announcement, social-media post, or old news article.
  2. Use an eligible credential. The user generally needs a driver’s license or state ID issued by the participating state or territory.
  3. Start the Wallet enrollment flow. The user scans the front and back of the physical credential when the state-ID option is available in Wallet.
  4. Complete identity verification. Apple’s process may request additional verification steps, and the information is submitted to the issuing authority for approval.
  5. Present the credential only where supported. A Wallet ID can be presented at select TSA checkpoints, businesses, venues, Apple Stores, apps, and websites that support Apple’s verification flows.

Apple’s general state-ID compatibility guidance lists an iPhone 8 or later with iOS 15.4 or later, or an Apple Watch Series 4 or later with watchOS 8.4 or later. Individual jurisdictions can impose more specific requirements, so compatible hardware alone does not guarantee enrollment or acceptance.

What hardware is required for passport-derived Digital ID?

Apple requires an iPhone 11 or later or an Apple Watch Series 6 or later for passport-derived Digital ID. Buying compatible hardware does not by itself establish eligibility or guarantee that a checkpoint, business, app, or website will accept the credential.

Apple’s current Digital ID support documentation lists these requirements for the passport-derived product:

  • An unexpired U.S. passport that belongs to the user.
  • An iPhone 11 or later, or an Apple Watch Series 6 or later.
  • The latest supported operating system; Apple’s current footnote specifies iOS 26.1 or later and watchOS 26.1 or later.
  • Face ID or Touch ID.
  • Bluetooth and a stable network connection.
  • Two-factor authentication enabled on the Apple Account.
  • The device region set to the United States.
  • The passport holder must be at least 13 years old.

The passport-derived product is a digital identity derived from the passport, not a digital version of the passport with all passport powers. Apple initially describes the product for identity verification at select TSA checkpoints for domestic travel and for supported apps and online services.

Can an Apple Wallet ID replace a physical license or passport?

No. A Wallet ID should be treated as a convenient additional credential, not as a universal replacement for the physical document.

State-issued Wallet IDs depend on selective acceptance. A police agency, retailer, airport, government office, venue, or business may not have a compatible reader, may not support Apple’s verification flow, or may operate under rules that require physical identification.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The passport-derived Digital ID has a stricter limitation: Apple says the product is not a replacement for the physical passport and cannot be used for international travel or border crossing. Travelers should continue carrying an authentic physical passport for international trips and should not assume that a domestic TSA checkpoint will accept a digital credential without checking the specific checkpoint first.

  • This is an ideal gift that can express your thoughtfulness and kindness. Suitable for any day you want to express love on, such as Valentine's Day, birthdays, Mother's Day, etc.

Where can Apple Wallet IDs be used?

Apple Wallet IDs can be used only at participating locations that have the necessary acceptance process. Apple describes use at select TSA checkpoints, businesses, venues, Apple Stores, apps, and websites rather than promising acceptance everywhere a physical ID is accepted.

For domestic air travel, TSA acceptance is checkpoint-specific. A digital ID may be accepted at one supported checkpoint while another airport, terminal, lane, or checkpoint does not support the same presentation flow. Travelers should verify current TSA acceptance before leaving a physical license or passport at home.

Apple’s September 2024 California announcement cited Turo as an app-based use case and identified CLEAR identity verification, MyChart, and Uber Eats among partner or expansion examples. Those dated examples demonstrate possible acceptance paths, not a current universal acceptance directory. Users should check the individual app or service before assuming that Apple Wallet ID verification is available.

How does Apple Wallet protect ID information?

Apple says ID data is encrypted on the device and that Apple cannot see when or where a user presents the ID. During a supported presentation, the user reviews the requested data and authorizes sharing with Face ID or Touch ID; the user does not need to unlock the device, show the screen, or hand the device to another person.

Apple’s privacy and security overview for IDs in Apple Wallet describes the user-controlled presentation model. Apple’s security documentation adds technical protections including issuer signatures, device binding through keys stored in the Secure Element, encrypted communication, reader authentication, and selective disclosure of requested data elements.

The security architecture follows the ISO/IEC 18013-5 mobile-driver’s-license model for relevant state credentials. Security protections do not change the separate question of acceptance: a credential can be cryptographically valid and still unusable at a location that lacks a compatible reader or does not accept mobile IDs.

How can businesses accept Apple Wallet IDs?

Apple provides an ID Verifier framework that can let U.S. businesses and organizations use an iPhone to read compliant mobile IDs without separate reader hardware in supported configurations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Apple ID Verifier developer documentation describes the business-side flow: a reader requests specific information, receives encrypted data, validates the credential, authenticates the reader, and processes ISO-defined mobile-document structures. The framework gives businesses an adoption path beyond the state rollout itself, but a business must still implement and support the system.

That business adoption creates a second bottleneck for practical usefulness. A state can appear on Apple’s live list while a particular retailer, venue, airport lane, app, or website still does not accept the credential.

What does the rollout history suggest about the next state?

The rollout history suggests that Apple Wallet IDs are expanding in stages, but the public record does not support naming a specific next state.

Apple’s September 2021 announcement described the initiative as intended to expand nationwide and said Apple was discussing participation with additional states. The announcement did not provide a dependable order or dated schedule. Arizona’s March 2022 launch then showed that an announced jurisdiction could take time to reach live deployment.

Apple’s later updates show progress from a small initial group to the current 14-state-and-Puerto-Rico list. The progression supports the conclusion that more jurisdictions may arrive, but the progression does not establish whether the next launch will come from an old announcement, a newly announced state, or a territory.

How should you track the next Apple Wallet state?

The safest way to track the next state is to separate three kinds of evidence:

  1. Live availability: Apple adds the jurisdiction to its current ID in Wallet list, and residents can begin the supported enrollment process.
  2. Official participation: Apple or a state agency announces an agreement or intention to adopt the feature, but enrollment may not yet be available.
  3. Speculation: A report, legislative discussion, or old announcement suggests interest without confirming a launch date or operational status.

For a resident of an unsupported state, the current options are limited. The resident cannot add that state’s license or ID until the state appears on Apple’s live list, but an eligible U.S. passport holder may be able to create the separate passport-derived Digital ID. Either path remains subject to selective acceptance, so the physical credential remains the dependable fallback.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a confirmed next state for Apple Wallet IDs?

No. Apple’s current ID in Wallet page lists 14 states and Puerto Rico as available, but Apple has not named or dated the next jurisdiction. Older announcements establish intended participation, not a confirmed upcoming launch.

Can Apple Wallet Digital ID replace a physical passport?

No. Passport-derived Digital ID is not a government-issued digital passport and cannot replace an authentic physical passport for international travel or border crossing. Domestic TSA acceptance is also limited to select checkpoints.

Does Apple Wallet ID work at every TSA airport?

No. Apple Wallet IDs are accepted only at participating TSA checkpoints and other supported locations. TSA acceptance is checkpoint-specific, so travelers should verify the checkpoint and carry appropriate physical identification.

Can someone in an unsupported state use an ID in Apple Wallet?

People in states that are not on Apple’s live state-ID list cannot add that state’s driver’s license or ID yet. Eligible users with an unexpired U.S. passport may still be able to create the separate passport-derived Digital ID, subject to Apple’s device, account, region, age, and software requirements.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Apple Wallet IDs are expanding, but Apple has not confirmed the next state. The current official list contains 14 states plus Puerto Rico. Treat older state announcements as participation history rather than a launch schedule, and remember that both state-issued Wallet IDs and passport-derived Digital ID work only where the relevant checkpoint, business, app, or website supports them.
