Short answer: An Apple Wallet driver’s license or state ID works only at participating TSA checkpoints, businesses, venues, apps, and websites. It is not a universal replacement for the plastic card. Keep a physical, TSA-acceptable credential available—especially when flying, dealing with law enforcement, entering a federal facility, or crossing an international border.
Can I use my Apple Wallet driver’s license instead of my physical ID?
Only in situations that explicitly support the Wallet credential. A state driver’s license or identification card in Apple Wallet is issued through a participating state or territory, then presented electronically to a compatible reader. Apple describes acceptance at select Transportation Security Administration checkpoints and at participating businesses, venues, apps, and websites. That wording matters: having an ID in Wallet does not make every business, officer, airport lane, or government counter able to accept it.

The physical card remains the broad-use backup. It is the credential to carry when the receiving organization has not announced Wallet support, when a rule requires an original physical document, or when you cannot confirm compatibility before leaving home.

| Situation | ID in Apple Wallet | Physical ID |
|---|---|---|
| TSA checkpoint | Accepted only at select participating checkpoints and only when the checkpoint, device, and credential are compatible. | A REAL ID-compliant state license or ID is on TSA’s acceptable list, alongside other listed credentials. |
| Business, venue, age check, app, or website | Works only where the organization supports the relevant Wallet ID and has compatible equipment or software. | Works where that organization accepts the physical credential and applicable rules permit it. |
| Law enforcement or another government interaction | Apple says Wallet ID is not a replacement for physical ID. Check the applicable state or agency rule. | Carry the original card when an authority may require it. |
| International travel or border crossing | Neither a state Wallet ID nor Apple’s passport-derived Digital ID replaces required travel documents. | Carry the required physical passport, visa, and other documents. |
Where an Apple Wallet license or state ID can work
Participating TSA checkpoints
Apple supports driver’s licenses and state IDs at select TSA checkpoints, not automatically at every airport or every lane. A digital-ID capability at one airport does not prove that the particular checkpoint you will use accepts your credential. Check current airport signage and the live TSA and Apple guidance before travel.

At a supported reader, your iPhone or Apple Watch presents the requested identity information after you review it and authorize the transaction with Face ID or Touch ID. The process is designed so you approve the information on your own device; Apple’s instructions do not require handing the device to an agent or giving someone your passcode.
Participating businesses and venues
Apple identifies uses such as identity and age verification at participating businesses and venues. Acceptance depends on the individual organization, its reader, and the credential types it has enabled. A venue that accepts one state’s Wallet ID may not accept every state’s ID, and a merchant’s ability to read a Wallet credential does not establish acceptance by nearby merchants.
Apps and websites
Some apps and websites can request information from an eligible Wallet credential for identity checks. The service must implement the relevant Apple capability and tell you what information it is requesting. You review the request before authorizing it. This is different from uploading a photograph of a driver’s license: the receiving service must support the Wallet presentation flow.
Places where you should not assume acceptance
- Traffic stops, police stations, courts, and other law-enforcement interactions.
- Government offices or federal facilities that require a physical credential.
- Airports or TSA lanes that do not display support for your Wallet ID.
- International borders, where a passport and other physical travel documents remain required.
- Any business that has not confirmed support for electronic IDs.
Will TSA accept my ID in Apple Wallet?
Sometimes. TSA acceptance is checkpoint-specific. Confirm the airport and checkpoint support before relying on the Wallet credential, and bring a TSA-listed physical credential or alternative anyway.
The REAL ID rule that applies to airport screening
TSA says adults age 18 and older must show valid identification at the airport security checkpoint. Since May 7, 2025, a state-issued driver’s license or ID that is not REAL ID compliant is no longer accepted as valid airport identification. A traveler without another acceptable credential may face additional identity screening, and TSA says a person whose identity cannot be confirmed will not be allowed into the security checkpoint. A temporary driver’s license is not on TSA’s acceptable-ID list.

Putting a noncompliant license into Apple Wallet does not bypass that rule. Wallet presentation changes how an eligible credential is read; it does not change the credential’s legal or travel status.
Physical alternatives TSA lists
TSA’s live acceptable-ID list includes several alternatives to a REAL ID-compliant state license or ID:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Enhanced driver’s licenses and enhanced identification cards.
- U.S. passports and U.S. passport cards.
- Certain trusted-traveler cards.
- U.S. military identification.
- Permanent-resident cards.
- Qualifying tribal identification.
- Other credentials listed in TSA’s current guidance.
TSA warns that its list can change without notice. Check the current list close to your departure date rather than relying on an old screenshot, a social-media post, or a general statement that digital IDs work at the airport.
Apple Wallet has two different identity products
Readers often use “digital ID” to describe two separate credentials. Their issuer, purpose, and limitations are different.
| Feature | State driver’s license or state ID in Wallet | Passport-derived Digital ID |
|---|---|---|
| Issuer and source | Issued and provisioned through a participating U.S. state or territory. | Created from an authentic, unexpired U.S. passport. |
| Primary described use | Participating TSA checkpoints, businesses, venues, apps, and websites that support the relevant ID. | Identity verification at select U.S. TSA checkpoints for domestic travel. |
| Passport replacement? | No. | No. Apple says it is not a government-issued passport and cannot replace the physical passport for international travel or border crossing. |
| Availability | Requires an eligible issuer plus Apple’s current device and software conditions. | Requires supported hardware and software, a U.S. device region, Apple Account two-factor authentication, Bluetooth, and a stable Wi-Fi or cellular connection. |
| Travel implication | Must still satisfy TSA’s credential rules and checkpoint support. | Useful only for supported domestic identity checks; keep the physical passport for international and border use. |
State license or state ID in Wallet
The issuing authority controls eligibility and enrollment. Apple’s availability documentation is issuer-specific, so a state’s participation does not guarantee acceptance at every location. Your device and operating-system compatibility also matter. Check the current Apple instructions for your particular state ID before assuming enrollment or presentment will work.

Passport-derived Digital ID
Apple describes Digital ID as a separate credential made from an authentic, unexpired U.S. passport. Apple’s stated requirements include supported hardware and software, the device region set to the United States, Apple Account two-factor authentication, Bluetooth, and a stable Wi-Fi or cellular connection. Its described use is identity verification at select TSA checkpoints before domestic travel.
Digital ID is not a passport, does not prove citizenship for an international border crossing, and cannot substitute for the physical passport when an airline, immigration authority, or border agency requires one.
How Wallet presentment works
Before you leave
- Confirm that your state or territory participates in Apple’s driver’s-license or state-ID program, or confirm that you meet the requirements for the passport-derived Digital ID.
- Check Apple’s current device and software requirements for the specific credential. For passport-derived Digital ID, verify the U.S. device region, Apple Account two-factor authentication, Bluetooth, and a stable Wi-Fi or cellular connection.
- Open Wallet, choose the option to add the eligible license, state ID, or Digital ID, and follow the issuer’s identity-verification steps shown on screen.
- Check the destination separately. A credential can be successfully added to Wallet yet still be unusable at a particular TSA checkpoint, merchant, venue, app, or website.
- Pack the physical credential or another TSA-acceptable alternative when traveling or entering a situation where acceptance is uncertain.
At a compatible reader
- Hold the iPhone or Apple Watch near the identity reader when instructed.
- Review the categories of information the reader requests.
- Authorize the requested sharing with Face ID or Touch ID.
- Wait for the reader or attendant to confirm completion before moving away.
You remain in control of the approval on the device. For Digital ID at TSA, Apple notes that the reader may capture your image and compare it with the image presented from the credential. That image comparison is part of the supported checkpoint process; it does not turn Digital ID into a physical passport.
Physical ID versus Wallet ID: the practical trade-off
| Decision factor | Wallet credential | Physical credential |
|---|---|---|
| Acceptance scope | Selective and dependent on participating locations, readers, apps, websites, and credential compatibility. | Broadly usable wherever the organization accepts the underlying government credential. |
| Airport compliance | Still subject to TSA’s acceptable-credential rules and checkpoint support. | A REAL ID-compliant card or another TSA-listed credential can satisfy the physical-document requirement. |
| Backup value | Should not be your only plan when support is uncertain. | Provides the fallback Apple explicitly says may still be needed. |
| Credential sharing | Lets you review requested information and authorize a supported electronic presentation. | Usually requires showing the card itself; the receiving organization decides what to inspect. |
| Setup | Requires a participating issuer and compatible Apple device, software, account, and, for Digital ID, connection conditions. | Requires the valid government-issued card and any compliance status demanded by the situation. |
| International travel | Does not replace a physical passport or other required travel documents. | Use the passport and documents required by the destination and border authority. |
Neither format is universally better. Wallet is convenient when a supported reader is available and you want to approve a specific information request. The physical card is more dependable across unknown locations and remains necessary for uses that demand an original credential.
What to carry for common situations
Domestic flight
First check whether the specific TSA checkpoint supports your Wallet credential. Then verify that the underlying state license is REAL ID compliant, or bring a different credential from TSA’s acceptable list. The safest travel setup is a supported Wallet ID plus a physical TSA-acceptable credential. Do not rely on a non-REAL-ID-compliant card simply because it appears in Wallet.

Age verification at a venue
Ask whether that venue accepts Apple Wallet IDs and whether it accepts your issuing state. If the answer is unclear, bring the physical card. A venue’s general acceptance of digital IDs does not guarantee that its reader is configured for every state or every Apple credential.
Identity verification in an app or website
Use the service’s Wallet option only when it appears in the service’s own flow. Read the requested information before authorizing. If the service asks for a photograph or manual entry instead, that is a different verification method and may have different requirements.
Traffic stop or government appointment
Carry the physical license or ID. Apple expressly says the Wallet version is not a replacement for physical ID, and the relevant state or agency may require the original card.
International trip or border crossing
Carry the physical passport and every document required by the airline and destination. Neither a state ID in Wallet nor passport-derived Digital ID substitutes for the passport used at an international border.

Troubleshooting when Wallet ID is not accepted
The checkpoint or business says it does not accept it
This is usually an acceptance limitation, not a defect in your phone. Ask whether another lane, reader, or verification method is supported, then use the physical credential or an approved alternative. Do not pressure an attendant to accept a Wallet ID when the organization has not enabled it.
Best Value
The credential is accepted in principle but the reader does not respond
Move the device close to the reader as instructed, keep Bluetooth enabled when the credential requires it, and follow the on-screen authorization prompt. If the reader still fails, switch to the physical card. At an airport, allow extra time for that change rather than assuming the checkpoint can troubleshoot a personal device.
Your state or ID cannot be added
Confirm that the issuer participates, your device and operating system meet Apple’s current requirements, and your identity information matches the issuer’s records. For Digital ID, verify the passport is authentic and unexpired and that the U.S. region, Apple Account two-factor authentication, Bluetooth, and connection requirements are satisfied.
You have the wrong credential for the rule
A temporary license, an expired document, or a non-REAL-ID-compliant state license may not satisfy TSA’s current rule. Use the live TSA list and bring a listed alternative. Wallet cannot upgrade an ineligible credential.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →How broad is Apple’s rollout?
Apple’s November 12, 2025 newsroom announcement reported availability for adding a driver’s license or state ID in 12 states and Puerto Rico at that time. Treat that figure as a dated rollout snapshot, not a current total. The same announcement described an initial Digital ID rollout at TSA checkpoints at more than 250 U.S. airports. That was a launch plan and does not prove that every checkpoint at those airports accepts Digital ID today.
No TSA-published count establishes current acceptance of Wallet IDs across airports. The reliable test is the particular credential, airport, checkpoint, and receiving organization you plan to use.
Privacy and control during presentation
In a supported transaction, the reader requests information and you review and authorize the request with Face ID or Touch ID. Apple’s stated design goal is to let users store and present identity information with the security and privacy built into iPhone and Apple Watch. Jennifer Bailey, Apple’s vice president of Apple Pay and Apple Wallet, described the launch this way: “With the launch of Digital ID, we’re excited to expand the ways users can store and present their identity — all with the security and privacy built into iPhone and Apple Watch.”
That control does not change the receiving organization’s authority to reject the credential. Privacy features govern how a supported presentation is approved; they do not create acceptance where no participating reader or policy exists.

Pre-trip and everyday checklist
- Identify exactly which credential you have: a state license or ID in Wallet, or passport-derived Digital ID.
- Confirm the issuer, device, software, account, region, Bluetooth, and connection requirements that apply to that credential.
- Verify the destination’s acceptance, not merely Wallet enrollment.
- For flights, check the specific TSA checkpoint and the current acceptable-ID list.
- Make sure your physical backup is valid and, for a state license used at TSA, REAL ID compliant unless you are carrying another listed credential.
- Keep a physical passport for every international trip and border crossing.
- Allow time to switch to the physical credential if a reader or policy does not support Wallet presentation.
The operational rule is simple: use Apple Wallet when the destination explicitly supports it, but plan as though the physical credential may still be required.
