The first encounter could fit after the novel’s ending; the second takes the adaptation further by continuing Jason2’s story. Both are in season 2, episode 4, “Stars, Hide Your Fires,” according to the episode listing and the scene-by-scene account discussed below.
Where the two reunions appear
The encounters are in season 2, episode 4, “Stars, Hide Your Fires,” released September 18, 2026. Apple lists the episode at 51 minutes, but its official synopsis—“The Dessens reach their breaking point”—does not describe either reunion. The scene details below are reported by Winter is Coming, rather than confirmed in Apple’s synopsis.

Jason Dessen and Leighton Vance meet again
In the novel, Leighton is associated with the creation of the Box at Velocity. After Jason escapes Velocity and leaves Jason2’s universe, the book does not return to Leighton. The series supplies a later encounter in the Retro Chicago Universe: the two meet by accident, and Leighton apologizes for how he treated Jason during his captivity. Jason tells Leighton how he feels, then sends him away.
#1 Best Overall
The scene offers a measure of closure, but it need not contradict the book’s ending. The novel simply does not show this meeting; it could have happened after the final page. The distinction matters: this is new material beyond the events the book narrates, not necessarily an event the book rules out.
Jason2 and Amanda Lucas reunite
The novel establishes a prior relationship between Jason2 and Amanda, but does not show them interacting. Amanda remains in the futuristic Chicago while Jason returns home to confront his double. Winter is Coming reports that Jason2 dies in the book, making the series’ reunion a more substantial departure: the adaptation continues his story and gives the pair a conversation the novel never depicts.
Amanda can confront Jason2 about abandoning her, while the scene leaves some affection unresolved. They technically cross paths in the preceding episode, the report says, but a chase interrupts their exchange; episode 4 contains the fuller conversation.

The Amanda reunion reflects a broader change in emphasis between the novel and its television adaptation. In a 2024 interview with Inverse, Crouch said that readers often asked what happened to Amanda after the book: “For every four emails I get from readers, probably two of those are asking what happened to Amanda in the book.” He observed, “She just kinda falls off in the book. She writes the letter, she’s gone,” and added, “I always knew I wanted to do justice to her.” Those remarks predate season two, but help explain why the series gives Amanda and Jason2 a continuing story.

| Reunion | What the novel depicts | What the series adds | What the encounter changes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jason and Leighton | The book does not show them meeting after Jason leaves Jason2’s world. | They meet again in the Retro Chicago Universe. | Leighton apologizes; Jason speaks his mind and sends him away. The meeting could fit after the novel’s ending. |
| Jason2 and Amanda | Their past relationship is established, but the book does not show them together; the report says Jason2 dies. | The series continues Jason2’s story and gives them a fuller conversation. | Amanda confronts him about leaving, with affection still unresolved. |
Both reunions extend what the novel shows, but they do so differently. Jason and Leighton’s meeting fills in an unshown point after Jason’s escape. Jason2 and Amanda’s encounter develops a relationship the book leaves in the past and depends on the show continuing Jason2’s story.
