Choose by your must-watch shows first, then by the viewing experience you want. Apple TV+ (the Apple TV subscription) is a focused, ad-free service built around Apple Originals such as Silo, Dark Matter, For All Mankind, Foundation, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, and Invasion. Netflix’s U.S. science-fiction browse page offers a broader mix of originals and licensed programs, including Stranger Things, 3 Body Problem, Black Mirror, Dark, Altered Carbon, and The Umbrella Academy.
In the United States, Apple advertises $14.99 per month after a seven-day free trial. Netflix lists Standard with ads at $8.99 per month, Standard without ads at $19.99, and Premium at $26.99 with 4K + HDR and spatial audio. Those prices and catalogs can change, and availability differs by country. Check both services immediately before subscribing for the show, season, plan and device you need.

The short answer: which service is better for science fiction?
Neither service is a universal winner. Apple TV+ is the better fit if you want a smaller, tightly curated group of original science-fiction series, no commercials in Apple Originals, explicit six-person sharing, and downloads to Apple devices. Netflix is the better fit if your priority is discovering many different science-fiction styles in one catalog, paying the lowest advertised monthly price, or choosing a Premium plan that advertises 4K, HDR and spatial audio.
Recommended Free Tools
The decisive question is not “Which service has more science fiction?” The official genre pages do not provide comparable title counts, and both catalogs are dynamic. Instead, write down the two or three shows you would actually watch. If one service has most of them, that title match outweighs a general impression that another platform has a larger genre section.

What is currently on Apple TV+?
Apple’s U.S. collection headed “Sci-Fi on Apple TV” emphasizes Apple-produced series. The page currently highlights the following examples:
- Silo: a dystopian mystery set in an underground society.
- Dark Matter: a science-fiction thriller built around alternate possibilities and identity.
- For All Mankind: an alternate-history space-race drama.
- Foundation: a large-scale space-opera adaptation.
- Monarch: Legacy of Monsters: a contemporary monster and kaiju story with science-fiction elements.
- Invasion: an alien-contact drama told through several human perspectives.
- Pluribus: listed by Apple in the same science-fiction collection.
Apple also places Severance in the collection, but its on-page descriptor is “Thriller · Mystery.” It is more precise to call it a genre-blending mystery/thriller with speculative elements than to treat Apple’s collection placement as proof that it is an unambiguous science-fiction series.
The collection displays “Another Season Is Coming” for several programs. That label indicates Apple is promoting a future season, not that a release date is confirmed. Verify the episode and season status in the service before planning a marathon.
Apple’s catalog character
Apple’s approach is easy to understand: a concentrated slate of exclusive productions rather than a genre shelf assembled from many rights holders. That can make the service feel coherent if you prefer polished, continuing series and are happy to follow Apple’s particular mix of space opera, dystopia, alternate history, alien contact and speculative thrillers. It also means a title that is not on Apple’s service is unlikely to be replaced by a large number of unrelated library shows.
What is currently on Netflix?
Netflix’s U.S. page headed “Sci-Fi Shows” presents a mixture of Netflix productions and other titles. Current examples shown on that page include:
- Stranger Things and The Umbrella Academy: serialized speculative adventures with strong genre and comic-book influences.
- 3 Body Problem: a contemporary science-fiction mystery involving cosmology and an extraterrestrial threat.
- Black Mirror: an anthology exploring technology, society and human behavior.
- Dark and Travelers: time-related science fiction with different narrative approaches.
- Altered Carbon: cyberpunk science fiction.
- Cowboy Bebop: a science-fiction action series adapted from an anime property.
- The OA, La Brea, Manifest, Heroes and The Flash: examples of mystery, superhero, survival and speculative drama grouped under Netflix’s genre label.
- Halo, The Eternaut and Love, Death & Robots: additional examples spanning space adventure, post-apocalyptic storytelling and animated anthology formats.
Netflix says new shows and movies arrive every week. The browse page is a living U.S. interface, not a promise that every listed title will remain available or that every show is a Netflix original. A program can disappear when licensing changes, so check the title page and its season list when it is important to your decision.

Netflix’s catalog character
Netflix’s genre shelf is useful for sampling very different kinds of science fiction without committing to one production style. You can move from anthology episodes to time-travel stories, superhero adventures, anime-influenced action and large serialized dramas. The trade-off is less uniformity: the service’s label groups titles with different ownership, tone, episode length and long-term availability.

| Service | Representative U.S. science-fiction listings | What the list tells you | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apple TV+ | Silo, Dark Matter, For All Mankind, Foundation, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters, Invasion, Pluribus; Severance appears as a mystery/thriller blend | A concentrated Apple Originals slate | A complete catalog, a permanent lineup, or a precise title count |
| Netflix | Stranger Things, 3 Body Problem, Black Mirror, Dark, Altered Carbon, The Umbrella Academy, Travelers, The OA, Halo, Love, Death & Robots and others | A mixed genre shelf covering many subgenres | A complete catalog, permanent availability, or a claim that every title is a Netflix original |
Use this three-step title check:
- List your non-negotiables. Include exact shows, not only broad labels such as “space science fiction.”
- Check the country-specific service page. The pages described here are for the United States; another country can have a different lineup.
- Check the season you intend to watch. A listing may include only some seasons, a recently added season or a program scheduled to leave.
U.S. price comparison
The following are advertised U.S. prices checked on October 13, 2026. They are monthly service prices, not a guarantee that a promotion, bundle or tax treatment will be identical for every account.
| Service and plan | Advertised monthly price | Ads | Video/audio details stated on the cited service pages |
|---|---|---|---|
| Apple TV+ | $14.99 after a seven-day free trial | Apple says Apple Originals are always commercial-free | Apple names Apple TV 4K as an option with 4K HDR and Dolby Atmos, but does not say every title or plan delivers those formats |
| Netflix Standard with ads | $8.99 | Yes | 1080p |
| Netflix Standard | $19.99 | No | 1080p |
| Netflix Premium | $26.99 | No | 4K + HDR and spatial audio advertised |
Netflix’s $8.99 plan is the lowest advertised entry price, but it is not equivalent to Apple’s offer: it includes commercials and 1080p. Apple’s $14.99 price is ad-free for Apple Originals, while Netflix’s ad-free Standard costs $19.99. Premium costs substantially more but is the only Netflix tier in this comparison that advertises 4K + HDR and spatial audio.
How to interpret the seven-day Apple trial
Apple advertises a seven-day free trial before the $14.99 monthly charge. Treat the trial as a time-limited offer: confirm the renewal date in your account and cancel before renewal if you do not intend to continue. Apple also mentions device promotions, Apple One and the Apple Music Student Plan. Eligibility and terms for those offers can vary, so do not assume that every subscriber receives them or that they are cheaper for your particular combination of services.
Ads, picture quality and sound
Commercials
Apple describes Apple Originals as commercial-free. That applies to the programs Apple identifies as Originals; it should not be generalized to every piece of content that might appear in the Apple TV app from another provider. Netflix’s Standard with ads deliberately trades a lower monthly price for commercial breaks. Netflix Standard and Premium are listed as ad-free.

Netflix explicitly lists 1080p for both Standard tiers and 4K + HDR for Premium. Apple’s service page says Apple TV 4K can provide 4K HDR and Dolby Atmos, but the page does not establish that every Apple title, device or account combination supports those formats. In either ecosystem, the source title, streaming device, television, network and plan can affect the result. A Premium subscription alone cannot make a non-4K television display 4K.

Audio
Netflix Premium advertises spatial audio. Apple names Dolby Atmos with Apple TV 4K. These labels describe supported formats, not a guarantee that every episode has a matching mix or that every sound system can reproduce it. Check the title’s playback information and your equipment when immersive audio is a deciding factor.
Sharing and offline viewing
Apple’s stated sharing option
Apple explicitly advertises that one subscription can be shared by up to six people through Family Sharing. The six-person figure is the service’s stated allowance; it does not mean six simultaneous streams, six unrelated households or six devices will always be permitted under every account configuration. Set up Family Sharing according to Apple’s current account rules.
Downloads
Apple states that Apple Originals can be downloaded to Apple devices for offline viewing. This is useful for flights, commutes and unreliable connections, provided the device has enough storage and the download remains authorized. The pages used for this comparison do not specify Netflix’s current download rules, device limits or title exceptions, so those details should be checked in Netflix Help rather than inferred from the genre page.
Release cadence and how it affects a science-fiction marathon
Apple says new movies and series are added on Wednesdays and Fridays. That is a service-level cadence, not a promise that every science-fiction show releases on both days. Individual Apple series can still use their own weekly or full-season schedule.
Netflix says new shows and movies arrive every week. Its wording likewise describes the overall service, not a guaranteed release day for a particular title. If you are choosing a subscription for an imminent premiere, use the show’s current listing and episode schedule instead of relying on the platform-wide cadence.
Devices and viewing requirements
An Apple TV 4K box is optional. Apple says the Apple TV app can be used on supported smart televisions and streaming devices, Apple and Android devices, and the web. Apple TV 4K is relevant if you want the hardware route and compatible 4K HDR or Dolby Atmos playback, but it is not a prerequisite for the subscription.

The cited Netflix genre and plan pages do not provide a complete device matrix in this comparison. Before paying for Premium, verify that your television, streaming player, receiver and network support the formats you expect. For either service, use a current app and a stable connection, and check whether a particular title carries the desired quality badge.
Which service fits your viewing pattern?
Choose Apple TV+ when these priorities dominate
- Your must-watch list is led by Silo, Foundation, For All Mankind, Dark Matter, Monarch: Legacy of Monsters or Invasion.
- You want Apple Originals without commercials.
- You value Apple’s explicitly advertised Family Sharing allowance for up to six people.
- You want the stated option to download Apple Originals to Apple devices.
- You prefer a focused original slate over a large mixed-license catalog.
- The $14.99 monthly price after the seven-day trial fits your budget better than Netflix’s ad-free tiers.
Choose Netflix when these priorities dominate
- Your list includes Stranger Things, 3 Body Problem, Black Mirror, Dark, Altered Carbon, The Umbrella Academy or another title shown on Netflix’s current science-fiction page.
- You want to explore several subgenres rather than stay within one original-production slate.
- You need the lowest advertised monthly price and accept commercials and 1080p through Standard with ads.
- You want an ad-free 1080p tier at $19.99 or Premium’s advertised 4K + HDR and spatial audio at $26.99.
- You prefer Netflix’s weekly flow of new shows and movies, while understanding that no specific title is guaranteed to arrive on a particular day.
Use both temporarily when your lists do not overlap
If Apple has one essential series and Netflix has another, a practical approach is to subscribe to the service whose current season you will watch first, finish that season, and then reassess the catalog and price before adding the second. Do not assume that canceling immediately removes access; check each service’s account terms and renewal date. This approach is a budgeting choice, not evidence that either platform has a larger science-fiction catalog.
Common mistakes when comparing the two
- Counting genre-page tiles as a catalog measurement. The pages are dynamic and do not supply a like-for-like total of science-fiction titles.
- Comparing the cheapest plans as if they were equivalent. Netflix’s $8.99 tier includes ads and 1080p; Apple’s $14.99 offer is described as ad-free for Apple Originals.
- Assuming every Apple TV app item is an Apple Original. The app can present content from other providers; the commercial-free wording specifically concerns Apple Originals.
- Assuming a show’s presence is permanent. Netflix’s mixed catalog can change with licensing, and Apple’s collection labels can change as series are added or promoted.
- Treating “Another Season Is Coming” as a release date. Apple’s collection label does not by itself establish when a season will premiere.
- Paying for a format your equipment cannot display. Premium’s 4K + HDR and spatial-audio claims require compatible title, device, display and audio hardware.
- Extending U.S. prices or availability to another country. The pages and figures in this comparison are U.S.-specific.
A practical decision checklist
- Open each service’s science-fiction page for your country.
- Write down the exact shows and seasons you plan to watch in the next month.
- Confirm that each title is available now, rather than merely promoted or listed in a collection.
- Decide whether commercials are acceptable. If not, compare Apple’s $14.99 offer with Netflix Standard at $19.99 or Premium at $26.99, not with Netflix’s $8.99 ad tier.
- Choose your quality target: 1080p, or Netflix Premium’s advertised 4K + HDR and spatial audio; verify Apple title and device support separately.
- Check whether Apple’s six-person Family Sharing and Apple-device downloads solve a need that matters to your household.
- Confirm the renewal date, trial terms and current price before submitting payment.
Availability, dates and what this comparison cannot prove
This comparison uses official U.S. service and catalog pages checked on October 13, 2026. Prices, promotions, release schedules and genre listings are time-sensitive. A title can be available in one territory and absent in another, and a page can change without changing the service’s name or plan structure.
The available pages do not establish a total number of science-fiction titles for either service, a quality ranking, Netflix’s offline-download rules, international pricing, or a universal limit on Netflix household sharing. Those points should not be inferred from the examples and plan cards above.
Bottom line
Pick Apple TV+ for its concentrated Apple Originals, ad-free presentation, explicitly stated six-person sharing and Apple-device downloads—especially if its headline series are the ones you want. Pick Netflix for its varied science-fiction shelf, $8.99 ad-supported entry tier, or Premium’s advertised 4K + HDR and spatial audio. Check the exact show and season in your country first; that title match is more reliable than declaring either service the overall science-fiction winner.
