Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsBuy the Siri Remote (USB-C) (3rd generation) if you want the current model. Apple lists it for Apple TV 4K (1st, 2nd, and 3rd generation) and Apple TV HD, with tvOS 15.4 or later. It uses USB-C, a touch-enabled clickpad, a circular outer-ring gesture, Bluetooth 5.0, infrared control, and Siri.
The 2nd-generation remote is still a practical choice for a compatible Apple TV if you already keep Lightning cables. The 1st-generation remote works with Apple TV 4K and Apple TV HD, but its black design, glass Touch surface, and Bluetooth 4.0 identify it as the oldest Siri Remote generation. All three have rechargeable internal batteries; a full charge takes about three hours and normally is needed only a few times per year.

| Remote | Charging connector | Apple TV models listed by Apple | Minimum tvOS stated by Apple | Navigation surface | Wireless and TV control | Physical identifier |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Siri Remote (USB-C), 3rd generation | USB-C | Apple TV 4K (1st, 2nd, and 3rd generation) and Apple TV HD | tvOS 15.4 or later | Touch-enabled clickpad with circular outer-ring gesture | Bluetooth 5.0, infrared transmitter, Siri microphone | Silver aluminum body |
| Siri Remote, 2nd generation | Lightning | Apple TV 4K (1st and 2nd generation) and Apple TV HD | tvOS 14.5 or later | Touch-enabled clickpad with circular outer-ring gesture | Bluetooth 5.0, infrared transmitter, Siri microphone | Silver aluminum body |
| Siri Remote, 1st generation | Lightning | Apple TV 4K and Apple TV HD | Not specified on Apple’s cited identification page | Glass Touch surface | Bluetooth 4.0, infrared transmitter, Siri microphone | Black aluminum body |
In countries where Siri is unavailable, Apple may label the same hardware Apple TV Remote instead. The name depends on the Apple TV language and country or region settings, not necessarily on a different physical remote.

Which Siri Remote should you buy?
Choose the 3rd-generation USB-C remote for a new purchase
The 3rd-generation model is the current generation in Apple’s specifications and has the broadest listed support. It covers every Apple TV 4K generation named by Apple, as well as Apple TV HD, when the software requirement is met. USB-C is also the more useful connector if most of your household charging equipment has moved away from Lightning.
Apple introduced this model in 2022. Its aluminum body measures 136 mm high, 35 mm wide, and 9.25 mm deep, and it weighs 66 g. Those measurements describe the remote itself, not a case or other accessory.
Choose the 2nd-generation remote when Lightning is an advantage
The 2nd-generation remote is a sensible replacement when your Apple TV is an Apple TV 4K (1st or 2nd generation) or Apple TV HD, the device can run tvOS 14.5 or later, and you already have Lightning cables available. Its clickpad, ring gesture, Bluetooth 5.0 connection, infrared transmitter, and Siri microphone provide the same basic control approach as the 3rd-generation model.

Consider the 1st-generation remote only as an older replacement
The 1st-generation Siri Remote is recognizable by its black aluminum body and glass Touch surface. It uses Bluetooth 4.0 rather than Bluetooth 5.0 and charges through Lightning. Apple lists it for Apple TV 4K and Apple TV HD, but the cited identification information does not specify a minimum tvOS version.
It can be appropriate when you are replacing an identical older remote and want the same physical feel. For a first-time purchase, its older navigation surface and wireless generation make the newer models easier to justify when they are compatible with your Apple TV.
How to identify the remote you already have
Look at the body before ordering a cable or replacement:
- Silver aluminum with a clickpad: it is either the 2nd- or 3rd-generation remote. Check the charging port to distinguish them: Lightning indicates 2nd generation, while USB-C indicates 3rd generation.
- Black aluminum with a glass Touch surface: it is the 1st-generation Siri Remote and uses Lightning.
- A thin aluminum remote without Siri or a touch surface: it is an older Apple Remote, not one of the Siri Remote generations in this guide. It uses infrared and has a more limited control set.
Do not rely on a listing title that says only “Apple TV remote.” Confirm the connector, surface, and generation before buying a replacement or cable.
Compatibility: match the remote to the Apple TV and tvOS
Apple TV 4K (3rd generation)
Apple’s listed match is the 3rd-generation Siri Remote with USB-C. The stated software requirement is tvOS 15.4 or later. The 2nd-generation remote is not included in Apple’s compatibility listing for this Apple TV generation.
Apple TV 4K (2nd generation)
Both the 3rd-generation USB-C remote and the 2nd-generation Lightning remote are listed as compatible, provided the relevant tvOS requirement is met. The 1st-generation remote is not identified with a generation-specific restriction in the cited compatibility summary, but it is listed generally for Apple TV 4K and Apple TV HD.

Apple TV 4K (1st generation)

Apple TV HD
Apple lists all three Siri Remote generations for Apple TV HD. For the newer two, check the stated minimums: tvOS 15.4 or later for the 3rd generation and tvOS 14.5 or later for the 2nd generation. Apple does not state a minimum tvOS version for the 1st generation on the cited identification page.
If a compatible remote will not pair or respond
First identify the remote by its port and body, then verify the Apple TV model and installed tvOS against the table. A software mismatch can look like a hardware incompatibility, so update tvOS before deciding that the remote is unsupported. Also check that you are using the correct cable: a USB-C cable cannot charge a Lightning remote, and a Lightning cable cannot charge the USB-C model.
USB-C versus Lightning: the practical difference
The connector is the clearest day-to-day distinction between the generations. The 3rd-generation remote has USB-C; the 1st- and 2nd-generation remotes have Lightning. Apple says the charging cable and USB power adapter are sold separately, so the remote package does not necessarily solve your cable or adapter needs.
Choose the connector that fits the cables already in your home only after confirming compatibility. Reusing a Lightning cable is useful with a 2nd-generation replacement, but it is not a reason to select that remote for an Apple TV model outside Apple’s listed range. Similarly, owning USB-C accessories does not make the 3rd-generation remote compatible with every older Apple TV configuration unless the software and model requirements are satisfied.
Navigation and control features
Clickpad and ring gesture on the newer models
The 2nd- and 3rd-generation remotes combine a physical click action with touch input. You can press the clickpad to select and use its touch area for movement. The circular outer-ring gesture gives a more precise way to move through video or menus than broad swipes alone. This shared control layout means that moving between these two generations does not require learning a completely different navigation system.
Glass Touch surface on the 1st generation
The 1st-generation remote uses a glass Touch surface instead of the later clickpad design. If you prefer the tactile click of the newer silver remotes, this is the generation most likely to feel different during everyday selection and scrubbing.
Siri, Bluetooth, and infrared
Each Siri Remote generation has a Siri microphone. Bluetooth provides the primary wireless link to the Apple TV, while the infrared transmitter allows control of compatible televisions or receivers. The 2nd- and 3rd-generation remotes use Bluetooth 5.0; the 1st generation uses Bluetooth 4.0.
Infrared capability does not make these remotes interchangeable with every older Apple Remote. The older aluminum Apple Remotes are primarily infrared devices with fewer controls, whereas Siri Remote generations combine Bluetooth with a touch surface or clickpad and Siri input.
Charging, battery life, and battery checks
How long a charge lasts
The 3rd-generation technical specification describes a rechargeable battery providing months of battery life on one charge with typical daily usage. Apple says the remote normally needs charging only a few times a year. Actual intervals vary with use, so treat “months” as a typical-use description rather than a guaranteed runtime.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)

How long a full charge takes
Apple’s user guide says the remote takes about three hours to fully charge. That is the stated full-charge time, not a promise that every partial charge will take three hours.
How to check the battery level
- Open Settings on the Apple TV.
- Go to Remotes and Devices.
- Select Remote to view the battery level.
The Apple TV also displays a low-battery alert. You do not have to stop watching while the battery replenishes: Apple says the remote can continue to be used while it charges.
Use the correct charging cable
- For the 3rd-generation remote, use a USB-C cable.
- For the 2nd- and 1st-generation remotes, use a Lightning cable.
- Because Apple sells the cable and USB power adapter separately, confirm what you already own before ordering accessories.
Battery replacement and service
The battery is internal and not user-replaceable as a standard removable cell. When it no longer holds a useful charge, the practical options are replacing the remote or seeking service rather than opening it to swap a battery yourself.

A buying decision framework
Use this sequence when selecting a replacement:
- Identify the Apple TV. Determine whether it is Apple TV HD or Apple TV 4K, and note the 4K generation if known.
- Check tvOS. The 3rd generation requires tvOS 15.4 or later; the 2nd generation requires tvOS 14.5 or later. Update the Apple TV before diagnosing a compatibility problem.
- Choose the connector. Select USB-C for the 3rd generation or Lightning for the earlier two. Existing cables matter only after the remote is confirmed compatible.
- Choose the control surface. Pick the clickpad and ring gesture on the 2nd or 3rd generation if you want the newer layout; choose the 1st generation only when its glass Touch surface is specifically what you need.
- Confirm the listing’s identity. Look for the generation and connector together, not just “Apple TV remote.”
- Plan for the battery. The internal battery is rechargeable but not user-swappable, so a failing battery eventually means service or another remote.
Buying by situation: quick recommendations
You own an Apple TV 4K (3rd generation)
Choose the USB-C 3rd-generation remote. It is the model Apple lists for this Apple TV generation, and tvOS 15.4 or later is the stated requirement. A 2nd-generation Lightning remote is not included in Apple’s compatibility listing for this model, so a low price or an existing Lightning cable should not outweigh the model mismatch.
You own an Apple TV 4K (1st or 2nd generation)
You have two newer options: the USB-C 3rd-generation remote with tvOS 15.4 or later, or the Lightning 2nd-generation remote with tvOS 14.5 or later. Select based on the connector and the control surface you prefer after checking software. The 1st-generation remote is also listed generally for Apple TV 4K, but it is the older black design with Bluetooth 4.0.
You own Apple TV HD
All three Siri Remote generations are listed for Apple TV HD. The 2nd generation requires tvOS 14.5 or later and the 3rd requires tvOS 15.4 or later; Apple’s cited identification information does not give a minimum tvOS version for the 1st generation. For a new purchase, the 3rd generation offers the current USB-C design, while a legitimate 2nd-generation unit can make sense when Lightning cables are already on hand.
You are replacing a lost remote but do not know the Apple TV generation
Identify the box, television settings, or Apple TV model information first rather than guessing from the phrase “Apple TV 4K.” The 4K generation changes the listed remote choices. If you can access the Apple TV, check its installed tvOS as well; the 15.4 and 14.5 thresholds are easy to miss when a remote appears not to work.
Accessories and ownership costs to plan for
The remote itself is only part of the replacement decision. Apple says the charging cable and USB power adapter are sold separately. Budget for the right cable if your existing one does not match the port, and verify whether you already have a suitable USB power adapter. A USB-C cable is needed for the 3rd generation; Lightning is needed for the 1st and 2nd generations.
A protective case or grip can be a reasonable secondary accessory for a remote that is frequently dropped, but compatibility still depends on the remote’s generation and dimensions. The 3rd-generation remote is 136 mm high, 35 mm wide, 9.25 mm deep, and 66 g, so check a case listing against those specifications rather than assuming every “Apple TV remote” case fits. Prices, inventory, and accessory availability change, so verify those details at checkout.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Buying by color alone
Silver identifies the 2nd- and 3rd-generation bodies, not a single model. Inspect the port to tell Lightning from USB-C. Black identifies the 1st-generation body, but color alone should not be used to infer the Apple TV model it supports.

Assuming every Apple TV 4K accepts every Siri Remote
The compatibility lists are generation-specific. The 3rd-generation remote is the one Apple explicitly lists across Apple TV 4K generations 1 through 3. The 2nd-generation list covers Apple TV 4K generations 1 and 2. Check the table rather than relying on the phrase “Apple TV 4K.”

A remote can be the right hardware but still fail the stated software requirement. Verify tvOS before returning a remote or concluding that Bluetooth pairing is impossible.
Ordering the wrong cable
USB-C and Lightning plugs are not interchangeable. Match the cable to the port, and remember that Apple says the cable and USB power adapter are sold separately.
Expecting a replaceable battery
These remotes are designed around an internal rechargeable battery. Do not plan on opening the remote to install a standard cell.
Confusing Siri Remote with an older Apple Remote
An older thin aluminum Apple Remote may be sold under a similarly broad listing name. It lacks the Siri Remote generations’ touch surface or clickpad and relies on infrared with a more limited control set. Confirm that the product description identifies a Siri Remote generation, its connector, and its Apple TV support.
