Apple TV released the trailer for Awkwafina: The Unlikely Cook on October 1, 2026. The eight-episode culinary docuseries premieres globally on Apple TV on Friday, November 6, 2026, following Nora Lum, known as Awkwafina, as she develops her cooking skills and considers how to revive her family’s restaurant legacy.
What Awkwafina: The Unlikely Cook is about
The series follows Lum on a cross-country culinary road trip. She says, “I can’t cook. Like, at all,” in Apple’s announcement, and sets out to learn while exploring contemporary Asian American cuisine and the future of her family’s restaurant. Apple identifies that restaurant, Lum’s, as a Cantonese restaurant in Flushing, New York.

The journey includes a crash course at the Culinary Institute of America, Texas barbecue with Jimmy O. Yang, and lessons from chefs Roy Choi and Martin Yan. Other stops explore the tiki culture that inspired Lum’s grandmother’s restaurant in Hawai‘i and bring Lum to a restaurant in Los Angeles’ Chinatown, where she takes on the challenge of serving. The story builds toward an opening night, with her grandmother among the diners.
