Dolby Atmos is coming to Formula 1 on Apple TV, beginning with the 2026 United States Grand Prix in Austin. Dolby announced the rollout on October 7, 2026, and says U.S. Apple TV subscribers will be able to watch every F1 race weekend in Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos. The change is announced, not yet demonstrated on a live race, and it applies to U.S. streaming only. Here is what is confirmed, what changes from the earlier setup, what the reporter who heard it actually experienced, and what you need at home to hear it.
What is confirmed and what is not
- Start: The planned start is the 2026 United States Grand Prix in Austin. The start date is planned, and no live-stream delivery has been independently verified yet.
- Scope: The announcement covers F1 on Apple TV for U.S. subscribers. It does not describe an upgrade to F1 broadcasts worldwide or on other services.
- Source of the claim: Dolby’s official announcement of October 7, 2026 is the primary statement of scope.
What changes from the earlier F1 audio setup
Apple’s March 5, 2026 announcement described U.S. F1 coverage on Apple TV with 5.1 surround sound and 4K Dolby Vision. The October announcement adds Dolby Atmos on top of that picture. The two should not be treated as the same thing: 5.1 was the baseline, and Atmos is the new layer.

How the Atmos audio is produced
Apple’s Global Head of Sports, Jim DeLorenzo, told TechRadar that Apple is not changing the track microphone array for this. The Atmos work builds on the existing race broadcast setup rather than adding new trackside capture. In the TechRadar interview, DeLorenzo said:
“One of the things that we thought about for quite some time is the audio side of that… how can we get to a point where we have not just Dolby Vision, but Dolby Atmos.”
#1 Best Overall
- 4K High Dynamic Range (Dolby Vision and HDR10) for stunning picture quality
- Dolby Digital Plus 7.1 surround sound
- A10X Fusion chip for ultra-fast graphics and performance
- Voice search by asking the Siri Remote
“We don’t change the mic array for this,” DeLorenzo told TechRadar.
“Any sporting event, when you’re there, one of the things that is so impactful on the experience is the sound,” he said. “Because the sound in an F1 race is so visceral… if we can bring a little bit more of this into somebody’s viewing experience when they’re not at the track, that’s going to help connect them a little bit more.”

TechRadar’s Jacob Krol wrote that he heard a Dolby Atmos mix of earlier races at an event in New York City, played as clips on a 9.1.4 system. He describes cars moving across the sound field and calls the difference “night-and-day.” In his words: “I got to hear a Dolby Atmos mix of some previous races, played as a clip at an event in New York City.” The full account is in TechRadar’s October 8, 2026 report.

That is a subjective listening account from a demo of past-race clips. It is not a measurement, it was not a live race, and it was not a test of a typical home setup. The 9.1.4 system was the demo equipment; Apple and Dolby have not set it as a viewer requirement.

Dolby says Dolby playback in the Apple TV app requires compatible Dolby-enabled devices, as described on its Apple TV app in Dolby page. Dolby’s guidance is general; it does not publish an F1-specific device list.

Devices Apple lists for F1
Apple’s March 5 announcement lists Apple TV 4K among the devices for watching F1 on Apple TV in the U.S., alongside smart TVs, other streaming devices, Apple devices, and game consoles. Apple TV 4K is one path, not the only one.
Audio equipment
No source establishes that a particular soundbar or Atmos-capable speaker system is mandatory. If your television or receiver already supports Dolby Atmos through a supported app and device, you may not need extra equipment. If you are considering a compatible soundbar, check its Dolby Atmos support before buying and confirm that your streaming device passes Atmos through to it. Compatibility is set by the product’s specifications, not by this announcement.
Cost and access
Apple’s March 5, 2026 announcement listed F1 on Apple TV at $12.99 per month, with a seven-day trial for new subscribers. Those terms were published in March and have not been re-verified as current for October. Check the price in the Apple TV app before you subscribe.
