Tubi is the better fit if you want a streaming service that does not charge for access. The Apple TV app is a hub and storefront: it can show programming from Apple and other services, as well as movies to rent or buy, so seeing a title there does not mean it is free. You can use both apps on supported devices, including Apple TV hardware in the U.S.
What “Apple TV” means matters
Apple uses similar names for different things. The Apple TV app is a place to browse and watch content from Apple and other sources. It can connect to third-party apps and channels, and it includes the Apple TV Store, where some movies are rentals or purchases. Apple describes these features on its Apple TV app page.

Apple TV as a subscription is a separate paid service with Apple Originals and other included programming. In the U.S., Apple’s page listed it at $14.99 per month after a seven-day trial when accessed on October 4, 2026. That subscription does not include third-party subscriptions or rentals and purchases in the app. Prices and offers can change, so check Apple’s U.S. subscription page for the current terms.
Tubi, by contrast, describes its service as 100% free on its support page. That is a statement about service access, not a guarantee that every film you want is available there.

How the options compare
| What you want to know | Tubi | Apple TV app |
|---|---|---|
| Do you pay just to use the service? | Tubi says its service is free. | The app is a hub, not an all-free catalog. Content may come from a paid subscription, another service, or a rental or purchase. |
| Can you watch Apple’s subscription programming? | No; Tubi is a separate service. | Apple TV subscription programming is available through Apple’s service, which is paid in the U.S. under the terms on Apple’s product page. |
| Does a title’s presence mean it costs nothing? | No. Check the title’s current availability in your region. | No. Check whether the listing says it is included, requires another service, or is for rent or purchase. |
| Can you use it on Apple TV hardware? | Tubi lists Apple TV 4th Generation among supported U.S. devices. | Apple offers its app on Apple devices and other supported platforms. |
These are different kinds of options rather than two equivalent free movie libraries. The official pages cited here do not establish a fair, current, title-by-title catalog comparison, so they cannot support a claim that one has more, better, or newer movies overall.
Choose based on how you define “free”
If you mean no subscription charge
Start with Tubi: its stated service price is zero. If you are browsing in the Apple TV app, look at each title’s access terms. A movie may be part of Apple’s paid subscription, require a different subscription, or be offered as a rental or purchase. The app itself does not make those options free.

- Ultra-speedy streaming: Roku Ultra is 30% faster than any other Roku player, delivering a lightning-fast interface and apps that launch in a snap.
- Cinematic streaming: This TV streaming device brings the movie theater to your living room with spectacular 4K, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision picture alongside immersive Dolby Atmos audio.
- The ultimate Roku remote: The rechargeable Roku Voice Remote Pro offers backlit buttons, hands-free voice controls, and a lost remote finder.
- No more fumbling in the dark: See what you’re pressing with backlit buttons.
- Say goodbye to batteries: Keep your remote powered for months on a single charge.
If you mean no charge for a particular movie
Search for that movie in the service you plan to use, then confirm the listing’s terms before pressing play. Availability and licensing can change, and a title’s presence in a browsing hub is not enough to establish that it is included at no extra charge.

If you mean no ads
The pages cited here do not give a dependable figure for Tubi ad frequency, so they cannot establish how often interruptions occur. If avoiding ads is your priority, check the current viewing experience and terms for the specific service and title rather than treating “free” as synonymous with “ad-free.”

Check device and country availability
If you already own Apple TV hardware in the U.S., you may not need another streaming box to try Tubi: its U.S. supported-device list includes Apple TV 4th Generation, and its installation guide covers Apple TV. Tubi also lists phones and tablets, smart TVs, web browsers, consoles, Chromecast, and other streaming platforms. Check the guide for the steps and availability relevant to your device.
Availability is not identical everywhere. Tubi publishes country- and region-specific device information, including for Canada, Australia, Mexico, Puerto Rico, selected Latin American markets, and the UK; platforms can vary by market. Apple also says features and content availability depend on country or region and hardware. Before choosing a service, check your local app store and the relevant Tubi device list or Apple’s app information.

- Pick Tubi first if your priority is a service with no access charge, and it is available on your device and in your country.
- Use the Apple TV app as a hub if you want to browse Apple programming and content from other services in one place, or access movies available to rent or buy.
- For a specific film, compare its listing and terms in each app. Confirm whether it is included, requires a subscription, or has a rental or purchase price before watching.
- Keep both if useful. They are not mutually exclusive, and supported devices may run both apps.
