Short answer: Roku Ultra is the best all-round choice for most mixed-device households because it combines a neutral interface with 4K HDR, Dolby Vision, Wi‑Fi 6, Ethernet, USB playback and a rechargeable premium remote. Choose Apple TV 4K (4th generation) if your home is built around Apple devices, Siri, AirPlay, Home integration or Apple services. Choose Fire TV Cube (3rd Gen, 2022) if hands-free Alexa and HDMI control or passthrough are central to your setup. All three support 4K HDR and Dolby Vision; the best box depends on the ecosystem and connections you value.
At a glance: the right pick by priority
| Your priority | Best fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Neutral platform, wired networking and local USB playback | Roku Ultra (4850R) | Wi‑Fi 6, 10/100 Ethernet, USB 3.0, broad HDR support and a rechargeable Voice Remote Pro (2nd edition). |
| Apple devices, AirPlay, Home integration and Apple services | Apple TV 4K (4th generation) | A19 chip, Siri, Apple ecosystem integration, Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos. |
| Hands-free Alexa and control of another HDMI device | Fire TV Cube (3rd Gen, 2022) | Far-field Alexa, HDMI 2.1 input and output, Wi‑Fi 6E and 16GB storage. |
“Best” is therefore priority-dependent rather than a universal performance ranking. The speed statements in this comparison come from the manufacturers, not from an independent head-to-head test.

Every HDR format still depends on the television, receiver or soundbar and the streaming service. A box cannot add Dolby Vision to a display that does not support it.

Picture quality: all three cover the major 4K HDR formats
Apple TV 4K
The fourth-generation Apple TV 4K outputs up to 2160p at 60 frames per second and supports Dolby Vision, HDR10, HDR10+ and HLG. That combination covers the principal HDR formats used by current televisions and services. Dolby Atmos support makes it suitable for a compatible soundbar or AV receiver. Apple describes the device as bringing television together with Apple devices and services; its practical advantage is less about a unique HDR format and more about how naturally it fits an Apple household.

Roku Ultra
Roku Ultra supports 4K/60, Dolby Vision, HDR10, HDR10+ and HLG, plus Dolby Atmos. It is the most format-complete option on paper alongside Apple TV 4K, while remaining platform-neutral. If members of your household use different phones, computers and smart-home platforms, that neutrality can matter more than a small difference in processor specifications.
Fire TV Cube
The third-generation Fire TV Cube supports Dolby Vision, HDR10+, HLG and Dolby audio passthrough. Its HDMI input and output are unusual among streaming boxes because they allow a compatible device to pass through the Cube while Alexa provides control. Check the capabilities of your television, sound system and connected source: passthrough does not guarantee that every device in the chain will accept every HDR or audio format.
Ecosystem and interface: the decision you will notice every day
Apple TV 4K for Apple-centered homes
Apple TV 4K is the clearest choice when your household already uses Apple devices and services. Siri handles voice requests, and Apple positions the box around integration with its devices. AirPlay and Home integration are the deciding features for many buyers: they let the television participate in the same ecosystem as compatible phones, tablets, computers and smart-home accessories. If those integrations are not useful to you, the Apple premium is harder to justify because the competing boxes already deliver the same headline 4K HDR formats.

- Ultra-speedy streaming: Roku Ultra is 30% faster than any other Roku player, delivering a lightning-fast interface and apps that launch in a snap.
- Cinematic streaming: This TV streaming device brings the movie theater to your living room with spectacular 4K, HDR10+, and Dolby Vision picture alongside immersive Dolby Atmos audio.
- The ultimate Roku remote: The rechargeable Roku Voice Remote Pro offers backlit buttons, hands-free voice controls, and a lost remote finder.
- No more fumbling in the dark: See what you’re pressing with backlit buttons.
- Say goodbye to batteries: Keep your remote powered for months on a single charge.
Roku Ultra for a neutral, simple interface
Roku Ultra is designed for households that want the television interface to stay independent of a phone brand or voice-assistant ecosystem. Roku’s current positioning emphasizes quick setup, a seamless experience and a theater-like result on compatible televisions. The interface and remote are the main reasons to choose it, not an exclusive video format. It is a particularly sensible default when different household members have different devices or when you want a straightforward launcher rather than deeper smart-home integration.
Fire TV Cube for Alexa households
Fire TV Cube makes the most sense when Alexa already runs your home. Far-field microphones let you speak to the Cube without first picking up the remote, and its HDMI input/output can place another compatible AV device under Alexa-oriented control. That is valuable in a living-room system with a set-top box, console or other HDMI source. It is less compelling if you never use voice commands or have no need to route another device through the Cube.
Networking and ports: where the boxes separate
Roku Ultra has the most useful mix
Roku Ultra combines Wi‑Fi 6 with a 10/100 Ethernet port. Wired networking is useful when the television is near a router, when wireless congestion is severe or when you want to remove one variable from 4K streaming. Its USB 3.0 port supports local USB playback, giving you a practical way to watch compatible files without running a media server. HDMI 2.1b connects it to a modern display.

- Breathtaking picture quality: Stunningly sharp 4K picture brings out rich detail in your entertainment with four times the resolution of HD. Watch as colors pop off your screen and enjoy lifelike clarity with Dolby Vision and HDR10+.
- Seamless streaming for any room: With Roku Streaming Stick 4K, watch your favorite entertainment on any TV in the house, even in rooms farther from your router thanks to the long-range Wi-Fi receiver.
- Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.
- Compact without compromises: Our sleek design won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, so you can switch from streaming to gaming with ease. Plus, it’s designed to stay hidden behind your TV, keeping wires neatly out of sight
Fire TV Cube is built for a connected AV chain
Fire TV Cube offers Wi‑Fi 6E, 10/100 Ethernet, USB 2.0 and both HDMI 2.1 input and output. Wi‑Fi 6E can use the 6GHz band when your router and environment support it, but the benefit depends on the rest of your network. The defining hardware feature is the HDMI input: it gives the Cube a role in controlling or passing through another source, rather than acting only as a standalone streamer.

Apple lists Wi‑Fi or Ethernet networking and HDMI video output. The current product information does not list a USB port, so do not buy it expecting Roku-style plug-in-drive playback. Apple also says the HDMI cable is sold separately. Confirm that your television or receiver has a suitable HDMI input before ordering accessories.
Voice control and remotes
Hands-free Alexa: Fire TV Cube
Fire TV Cube’s far-field Alexa microphones are the only hands-free voice arrangement in this comparison. You can issue commands from across the room, subject to microphone settings, room acoustics and Alexa compatibility. This convenience is strongest when you already use Alexa routines or smart-home controls; it is unnecessary if you prefer a physical remote for every interaction.

Siri: Apple integration rather than room-wide microphones
Apple TV 4K brings Siri voice control through its remote and Apple ecosystem. Its appeal is the continuity with Apple services and devices, not a promise of always-listening, room-wide control. Consider whether you want to speak to the remote or to a hands-free assistant before choosing it over Fire TV Cube.
Roku Voice Remote Pro
Roku Ultra includes a rechargeable Voice Remote Pro, second edition. A rechargeable remote can reduce disposable-battery use and the remote’s voice features provide search and control without adding a separate smart speaker. Roku does not provide a hands-free far-field claim for this model in the cited specifications, so expect a remote-led experience rather than Fire TV Cube’s room-wide Alexa behavior.

Roku Ultra is the clear choice here if you maintain a USB drive of compatible media, because Roku explicitly lists local USB playback and provides USB 3.0. Fire TV Cube has USB 2.0, but the supplied specification does not establish a local-playback feature. Apple’s current specification does not list USB, so local playback should not be a deciding expectation for that box.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Performance claims: what they do and do not prove
Roku calls Ultra “30% faster than any other Roku player.” That is Roku’s own comparison, not an independent benchmark. Amazon calls Fire TV Cube its fastest 4K streaming media player and says its octa-core processor is “2X more powerful than the Fire TV Stick 4K Max.” That is also a vendor comparison, measured under conditions not provided here. Apple lists an A19 chip for the fourth-generation Apple TV 4K. No controlled, independent timing study establishes which of the three opens apps or starts streams fastest, so choose on features and ecosystem rather than treating those percentages as a neutral ranking.
Setup and total ownership cost
Before you buy
- Verify that your television has an available HDMI input and supports the HDR formats you want to use.
- For Dolby Atmos, confirm that the television, soundbar or AV receiver and the chosen service support the required audio path.
- Choose Ethernet when the box and router are close enough for a cable; otherwise check whether your wireless network supports the box’s Wi‑Fi generation.
- For Apple TV 4K, add a compatible HDMI cable because Apple says it is sold separately.
- For Fire TV Cube, check whether your existing HDMI source and display are suitable for the Cube’s input/output passthrough arrangement.
- If you use USB media, favor Roku Ultra and verify that your files are in formats its player accepts.
Physical setup
- Connect the box to an open HDMI input on the television or receiver. With Fire TV Cube, connect an additional source to the Cube’s HDMI input only if you intend to use passthrough.
- Attach Ethernet if you want a wired connection; otherwise power the box and join the appropriate Wi‑Fi network during setup.
- Turn on the television, select the matching HDMI input and complete the on-screen account and network prompts.
- Enable the display’s HDR and audio features as appropriate, then test a title known to offer 4K HDR or Dolby Vision. The visible result depends on the full chain, including the television and service.
- Pair or charge the remote. On Fire TV Cube, review Alexa and microphone privacy settings before enabling hands-free commands.
Prices, stock, generations and retailer bundles change. Check the current listing at the time of purchase, and compare the complete package rather than the box alone: Apple TV 4K requires a separate HDMI cable, while a bundle may include accessories that alter the effective setup cost.

Which streaming box should you buy?
Choose Roku Ultra when you want the safest general recommendation
- You want a platform-neutral interface for a mixed-device household.
- You need Ethernet, Wi‑Fi 6 or USB playback.
- You value a rechargeable premium remote.
- You want Dolby Vision, HDR10+, HLG and Dolby Atmos without committing to Apple or Alexa.
Roku Ultra is the strongest default because its connectivity and local-media features solve common living-room problems while its ecosystem demands the fewest broader commitments.
Choose Apple TV 4K when Apple is already your platform
- You use Apple devices and services heavily.
- AirPlay, Home integration or Siri is more important than USB playback.
- You want an A19-based box with 4K/60 output, broad HDR support and Dolby Atmos.
- You are comfortable buying a separate HDMI cable.
Choose Fire TV Cube when Alexa and HDMI passthrough are the point
- You want far-field Alexa rather than a remote-only voice experience.
- You need to connect and control another HDMI source through the streaming box.
- Your network can take advantage of Wi‑Fi 6E or you plan to use Ethernet.
- 16GB of listed storage is useful for your app and download needs.
A practical buying checklist
- Identify the ecosystem you already use: Apple, Alexa or neither.
- Mark whether you need wired Ethernet, USB playback or an HDMI input; these three requirements immediately narrow the choice.
- Check your display and audio equipment for 4K, Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos compatibility.
- Decide whether voice control should be remote-based or hands-free.
- Add required accessories, especially Apple’s separate HDMI cable, to the total cost.
- Confirm the exact generation and model number at checkout: Apple TV 4K (4th generation), Roku Ultra 4850R or Fire TV Cube (3rd Gen, 2022).
- Recheck current price, stock and bundle contents because retail listings change.
Bottom line
For most households, buy Roku Ultra 4850R. It offers the best balance of neutral software, 4K HDR support, Dolby Atmos, Ethernet, Wi‑Fi 6, USB playback and a rechargeable remote. Buy Apple TV 4K (4th generation) when Apple integration and Siri outweigh the lack of listed USB playback and the need for a separate HDMI cable. Buy Fire TV Cube (3rd Gen, 2022) when hands-free Alexa and HDMI input/output will be used regularly. All three can deliver excellent 4K HDR streaming; your ecosystem, ports and control style determine the winner.
