Apple announced a U.S. price of $299 on October 13, 2026, compared with Google’s listed $149.99 for Google TV Streamer (4K). The new Apple model is not yet available in stores: Apple says preorders begin October 13 and store availability begins November 13.
That price and feature gap makes this a choice about priorities, not a universal upgrade. Apple’s performance and privacy details are company claims, not independent test results, and the available information does not establish that the new Apple device is objectively more private than Google’s streamer.

What the comparison actually covers
“Google TV” can mean the software on different televisions and streaming devices. The direct product comparison here is between Apple TV 4K (4th generation), announced October 13, 2026, and Google TV Streamer (4K), the device listed by Google’s U.S. Store. Prices below are U.S. figures and can change.

| U.S. price and availability | $299 announced October 13, 2026; preorders begin October 13, with store availability stated for November 13. Apple announcement | $149.99 listed by Google’s U.S. Store when checked. Price and inventory can change. Google Store listing |
| Performance information | Apple says the A19 chip delivers up to 50% faster CPU performance and up to 2x faster GPU performance than the previous generation. These are Apple’s claims, not independent benchmark results. Apple announcement | Google says the processor is 22% faster, but the surfaced product information does not state the comparison baseline. This percentage cannot be directly compared with Apple’s claims. Google Store listing |
| Video and audio | The announcement information available here does not establish a detailed format table for the 4th generation. Do not assume that earlier-model specifications apply in full. | Up to 4K HDR at 60 fps; Dolby Vision, HDR10, HDR10+ and HLG; Dolby Atmos. Google Store listing |
| Network and memory | Detailed fourth-generation network and memory specifications are not established in the announcement information available here. | Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Ethernet at 10/100/1000 Mbps, 32 GB storage and 4 GB memory. Google Store listing |
| Smart-home features | Apple says the device can serve as a home hub and supports HomeKit Secure Video. Apple announcement | Google lists Matter support and a Thread border router. Google Store listing |
The headline price difference is $149.01 before any taxes, accessories or promotions, based on the two dated U.S. figures. Both setups may also require a separate HDMI cable: Google specifies a certified HDMI 2.1 cable, sold separately; Apple’s currently surfaced specifications page says a cable is sold separately but reflects an earlier generation. Is Apple TV 4K more powerful?
Apple’s fourth-generation announcement identifies the A19 chip and says it provides up to 50% faster CPU performance and up to 2x faster GPU performance than the previous Apple TV generation. Apple also says the device includes a dedicated AV1 decoder. These statements describe Apple’s claimed improvements; they are not independent measurements and do not establish how the device performs against Google TV Streamer in a like-for-like test.
Google’s product page says Google TV Streamer has a processor that is 22% faster, but does not identify the baseline in the surfaced statement. Without a shared baseline, workloads and test conditions, the percentages from the two companies are not meaningfully comparable. A faster chip may matter most if you notice slow navigation or want more headroom for demanding apps, but the available claims alone do not prove a practical advantage for every viewer.

What Apple’s privacy claims do—and do not—establish
Apple describes several privacy-oriented design features for the new device. It says Secure Exclaves isolate certain data and states: “Data that is processed and analyzed in the Secure Exclaves cannot be accessed by tvOS, apps, the user, or Apple.” That is Apple’s description of its architecture, not an independent audit. Apple also says Siri AI requests can be processed on-device or through Private Cloud Compute, and that HomeKit Secure Video footage is end-to-end encrypted and inaccessible to Apple. Apple announcement
Privacy depends on settings as well as architecture. Apple Support documents controls for app tracking requests, location, photos, Bluetooth, microphone, camera, Apple Home access, media activity and analytics sharing. The “Improve Siri & Dictation” setting is consequential: Apple says enabling it allows the company to store and review audio of Siri and dictation interactions from the device. Review these options during setup and revisit them if your preferences change. Apple Support privacy settings

There is also a specific disclosure about search. Apple’s tvOS 26 software license says: “If you do not want your search queries and related usage data (including subscriber status) sent to Apple, you should not use the Apple TV Search feature.” That makes a blanket claim that Apple TV sends no data inaccurate; the license describes data associated with this feature. tvOS 26 software license
The available information does not support a like-for-like conclusion that Apple TV 4K is more private overall than Google TV Streamer. Apple’s published claims and support documentation explain some of Apple’s design and controls, but a current independent comparative privacy measurement of these two devices has not been established.

Which device fits your setup?
Choose Apple TV 4K if
- You want Apple’s platform and the Apple home features described for this generation, including its role as a home hub and HomeKit Secure Video integration.
- You value Apple’s stated privacy architecture and want configurable permissions, while understanding that search and selected Siri-related settings have data-use implications.
- You are comfortable paying the announced $299 U.S. price for a device whose detailed fourth-generation specifications and independent comparative performance results are not established here.
Choose Google TV Streamer if
- You want the lower listed U.S. price of $149.99 and Google’s stated 4K HDR, HDR formats, Dolby Atmos and Ethernet support.
- Matter and a Thread border router fit your smart-home setup.
- The listed 32 GB storage and 4 GB memory meet your needs, and you are comfortable checking Google’s own privacy information and settings before deciding.
Check before switching
- Confirm that your television supports the resolution, HDR formats and audio formats you intend to use. The available fourth-generation Apple announcement does not provide the same detailed format list as Google’s product page.
- Check what is included in the box and whether your existing HDMI cable meets the device’s requirements. Google explicitly requires a certified HDMI 2.1 cable; Apple’s earlier-generation specifications page is not enough to establish the new model’s cable requirement.
- Consider smart-home compatibility and which platform you want to use day to day. A streaming device’s smart-home role can matter as much as its processor.
- If privacy is decisive, read the manufacturers’ data disclosures and configure the settings you care about. Apple’s documented controls and claims should not be mistaken for an independent comparison against Google.
Can you replace Google TV with Apple TV 4K?
You can use Apple TV 4K as a streaming device with a compatible television, but replacing a Google TV device is not necessarily the same as replacing the Google TV interface on a television. The new Apple device is a separate product and platform. Whether it suits your household depends on the apps and services you use, your TV’s compatibility, your smart-home setup and whether you prefer Apple’s interface and controls. The announcement and product information cited here do not establish that every Google TV app, feature or household workflow has an equivalent on Apple TV.

What is still unknown about the new Apple model
Apple’s general technical specifications page currently surfaces details for an earlier A15 Bionic Apple TV 4K generation. It should not be used to fill in missing fourth-generation specifications such as detailed video formats, networking or memory. For the new model, rely on the October 13 announcement for the information it actually states, and confirm specifications and included accessories with Apple when the full product details are available.
