Apple TV 4K is the stronger choice when built-in storage, Apple’s lossless-audio format support, or a 128GB Ethernet configuration matters. Google TV Streamer (4K) provides 32GB, built-in gigabit Ethernet, Google TV discovery features, and broad published HDR and Dolby audio support at a listed US price of $99.99. Neither manufacturer’s specifications establish a universal winner for app selection or real-world speed, so your must-have services, country, display, audio system, and network should decide the purchase.

At a glance: what the published specifications actually show

The two streamers overlap on the essentials: 4K output, Dolby Vision, HDR10-family formats, 60-frame-per-second playback, Dolby audio support, and HDMI connectivity. Their clearest measurable differences are storage and configuration. Apple lists Apple TV 4K in a 64GB Wi‑Fi version and a 128GB Wi‑Fi + Ethernet version. Google lists 32GB for Google TV Streamer (4K), with Ethernet built in.

Those are total capacity figures, not promises about free space after the operating system and preinstalled software are accounted for. They also do not predict how quickly either interface will feel in daily use; the official material does not include a controlled speed comparison.

Storage: 64GB, 128GB, or 32GB?

Apple’s two configurations

Apple’s Apple TV 4K specification lists 64GB for the Wi‑Fi model and 128GB for the Wi‑Fi + Ethernet model. The larger capacity is therefore tied to the model that also provides wired networking. You cannot treat “Apple TV 4K” as a single storage configuration when comparing prices or fit: identify both the capacity and the network option.

The 64GB model is already ample for a household that mainly streams and installs a moderate number of services. The 128GB version gives more room for a large app collection, games, downloaded media where an app permits it, and future software growth. It also lets you use an Ethernet cable instead of Wi‑Fi. Those are separate benefits, but Apple packages them together in the listed configurations.

Google’s 32GB capacity

Google lists 32GB of storage for Google TV Streamer (4K). Its specification also lists built-in Ethernet, so wired networking does not require moving to a higher-capacity Google model. A 32GB total is smaller than either published Apple capacity, but storage needs depend on how many applications and games you install; most streaming households do not store their entire video library on the streamer.

Capacity is not the same as usable space

Neither specification says how much storage remains available after the operating system, system partitions, updates, and bundled components. Do not convert 64GB, 128GB, or 32GB into a claimed amount of free app space. If you expect to install many large games or keep a particularly broad app collection, the listed capacities provide a useful ordering—128GB, then 64GB, then 32GB—but not an exact free-space forecast.

Apps and interface: why there is no defensible universal winner

App availability is regional

The cited manufacturer pages do not provide complete, matched, country-specific catalogs for tvOS and Google TV. They therefore cannot establish that one platform has “more apps,” every service, or better app support overall. Streaming rights, app releases, subscription tiers, and device support can vary by country.

Before buying, make a short list of services you actually use—live television, sports, local broadcasters, music, cloud gaming, and niche subscriptions included. Check each service’s current support page or the relevant app store for your country and for the exact device family. A service being available on one platform in the United States does not prove availability in another country.

Google’s documented discovery features

Google describes recommendations that combine subscriptions, viewing history, and owned content. It also describes voice search across apps. These statements establish how Google presents discovery, not that every subscription can be searched or launched in every region. Recommendation quality will also depend on which accounts are connected and which services share metadata with the platform.

What the specifications do not tell you

There is no controlled, current head-to-head test in the cited material for app-launch time, scrolling smoothness, voice-recognition accuracy, ad load, or long-term update behavior. Avoid treating storage size, memory figures, or an interface description as a benchmark. If responsiveness is your deciding factor, look for a dated test that compares the same apps, network conditions, and software versions; the published specifications alone cannot supply that verdict.

Media playback and HDR formats

Apple TV 4K video support

Apple lists SDR AVC and HEVC playback up to 2160p at 60 frames per second. For Dolby Vision, it lists Profile 5 up to 2160p at 60 fps. It also lists HDR10+, HDR10, and HLG using HEVC up to 2160p at 60 fps.

These are format and ceiling specifications. A title must be encoded in the format, your subscription or local file source must deliver it, and the television must accept and display it. If any link in that chain lacks support, the output can fall back to another supported mode.

Google TV Streamer video support

Google lists up to 4K HDR at 60 fps and names HDR10, HDR10+, HLG, and Dolby Vision. Google’s support guidance explicitly says that actual resolution depends on the device and display as well as the content being streamed. Its guidance also says the device works with HDMI displays at different resolutions but recommends a 4K television for the best experience.

Consequently, connecting either streamer to a 1080p television does not turn that television into a 4K display. The streamer can negotiate a mode the display accepts, while the service may choose a stream based on the display, account, title, and available bandwidth.

How to check a claimed 4K or HDR result

  1. Confirm that the television input used by the streamer supports the required resolution and HDR formats.
  2. Use a title and service tier that actually offers 4K and the HDR format you want; not every title is mastered the same way.
  3. Connect the streamer directly to a compatible HDMI input first, eliminating an older switch or receiver as a possible limitation.
  4. Check the television’s on-screen signal information while the title is playing. The label should reflect the mode the display is receiving, not merely the mode the streamer can support.
  5. If the result is lower than expected, test another known 4K/HDR title and inspect the network and audio-video components before concluding that the streamer lacks support.

Audio playback and the complete signal chain

Apple’s published audio formats

Apple lists AC‑3 for Dolby Digital 5.1 and E‑AC‑3 for Dolby Digital Plus 7.1, along with Dolby Atmos. Its specification also names common stereo and lossless formats including AAC, MP3, Apple Lossless, FLAC, AIFF, and WAV. That list is useful if you play music or local media through compatible applications, not only movies and television.

Google’s published audio formats

Google lists Dolby Digital, Dolby Digital Plus, and Dolby Atmos for Google TV Streamer (4K). The list does not by itself promise that every app, title, television, soundbar, or receiver will deliver Atmos or a particular channel layout.

Connecting a television, soundbar, or receiver

Google’s guidance recommends connecting a directly attached audio system through the television’s eARC HDMI port, using an HDMI 2.1 cable, for high-quality audio. The practical requirement is end-to-end support: the streamer, television, eARC connection, soundbar or receiver, and content must all support the format you are trying to hear.

If a receiver or soundbar is older, it may pass video but fail to pass a newer HDR mode, or it may accept video while limiting audio. Connect the streamer directly to the component that can handle the desired signal, then use the television’s eARC path when that is the supported arrangement. Confirm the television’s input and eARC settings according to its own manual.

Cables, ports, and networking

HDMI cable requirement

Both manufacturers document a separately obtained HDMI cable. Apple says the HDMI cable is sold separately. Google recommends an “Ultra High Speed” HDMI 2.1 certified cable for optimal performance. That recommendation does not mean every existing cable must be replaced: if your current cable reliably carries the resolution and HDR mode your setup uses, it may be sufficient. A certified cable is a sensible troubleshooting step when you see dropouts, a blank screen, or an HDR mode that never appears.

Apple connectivity

Apple lists HDMI 2.1, Wi‑Fi 6, and Bluetooth 5.0. Ethernet is part of the 128GB Wi‑Fi + Ethernet configuration rather than the 64GB Wi‑Fi model. Choose the wired configuration if a stable cable run is important and you also want the larger storage capacity.

Google connectivity and smart-home functions

Google’s specification sheet lists USB‑C for power, data, and Ethernet; HDMI 2.1 Type A; RJ45 gigabit Ethernet; Wi‑Fi 802.11ac; Bluetooth 5.1; and 4GB of memory. Google also lists Thread border-router capability and Matter/Google Home hub features. These smart-home functions are relevant if the streamer will participate in a compatible Google Home and Matter setup; they do not change the video formats your television supports.

Setup checklist for a reliable first connection

Before you plug anything in

  • Identify the television input that supports the resolution and HDR formats you plan to use.
  • Have an HDMI cable available; Google recommends an Ultra High Speed HDMI 2.1 certified cable, while Apple specifies that the cable is sold separately.
  • Decide whether to use Wi‑Fi or Ethernet. Wired networking is available on Apple’s 128GB Wi‑Fi + Ethernet model and is built into Google TV Streamer (4K).
  • Check that your television, soundbar or receiver, and streaming service support the same HDR and audio formats.

Physical installation

  1. Connect the streamer to the television’s HDMI input.
  2. Connect the supplied power hardware and switch the television to that HDMI input.
  3. If using Ethernet, connect the network cable before completing network setup. Otherwise, join the appropriate Wi‑Fi network during the on-screen setup.
  4. If using eARC audio, connect the audio system to the television’s eARC HDMI port and enable the television’s eARC and external-audio options as required by its manual.
  5. Complete the device’s account, software-update, and app setup, then test one known 4K title and one title with the audio format you care about.

Verify rather than assume

Play a title known to be offered in 4K HDR and inspect the television’s signal display. Then play an Atmos-capable title while checking the soundbar or receiver’s input indicator. A service badge, an app setting, and the receiver’s actual decoded signal can differ, so use the display and audio equipment as the final confirmation.

Which one fits common setups?

Choose Apple TV 4K when storage headroom is the priority

Apple is the straightforward fit if you want the largest published capacity: 128GB, with Ethernet included in that configuration. The 64GB Wi‑Fi model still exceeds Google’s listed 32GB, but it does not provide the wired-network option listed with Apple’s 128GB model.

  • Up to 4K HDR with Dolby Vision delivers captivating, true-to-life detail[4]; and you can connect speakers that support Dolby Atmos for more immersive 3D sound

Choose Google TV Streamer when Google’s ecosystem or built-in Ethernet matters

Google’s streamer combines 32GB storage with built-in gigabit Ethernet, Google-described cross-service recommendations and voice search, and documented Thread and Matter/Google Home hub functions. It is the more natural match for a household already organized around those Google smart-home features.

Choose based on your actual services, not an app-count claim

If a particular sports, local television, music, or cloud-gaming service is essential, verify that service for your country and device before comparing secondary specifications. The official pages cited here do not settle a universal app-catalog winner.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose based on the television and audio chain

Both platforms publish Dolby Vision and the major HDR10-family formats, so the decisive question is often whether your television and sound system support the same formats. If your display is 1080p, you will not receive 4K detail from either device. If your receiver lacks the required HDMI or eARC capabilities, it can limit the result even when the streamer supports it.

Price, region, and availability

Google’s “Meet Google TV Streamer (4K)” page lists a price of $99.99 for the United States. The cited Apple specification page does not provide a comparable Apple TV 4K price. Treat both prices and stock as time- and region-sensitive; use the current manufacturer or local retailer listing for the country where you will buy.

Do not compare the US Google figure directly with a non-US Apple price, tax-inclusive local price, bundle, or temporary promotion. Confirm the exact Apple configuration—64GB Wi‑Fi or 128GB Wi‑Fi + Ethernet—and the exact Google model before placing an order.

Troubleshooting common playback problems

The television shows 1080p instead of 4K

  • Confirm that the television itself is a 4K model and that the streamer is connected to a compatible HDMI input.
  • Try a title and service tier that are explicitly available in 4K.
  • Remove an older HDMI switch or receiver temporarily and connect the streamer directly to the television.
  • Check the cable; Google recommends an Ultra High Speed HDMI 2.1 certified cable for optimal performance.
  • Inspect the television’s received-signal information while playback is active.

HDR or Dolby Vision does not appear

  • Verify that the display input has HDR or Dolby Vision enabled where the television requires a per-input setting.
  • Test a title mastered in the format; a 4K title is not necessarily a Dolby Vision title.
  • Check every intermediary device for format support and try a direct connection to isolate the limitation.
  • Remember that Google documents resolution as dependent on the display and content, while Apple’s listed formats are maximum playback capabilities.

Atmos or surround sound is missing

  • Confirm that the title and service provide Atmos or the surround format you expect.
  • Check the soundbar or receiver’s input indicator rather than relying only on the streamer’s menu.
  • For Google’s recommended high-quality arrangement, use the television’s eARC HDMI port and a suitable HDMI 2.1 cable.
  • Test direct streamer-to-television wiring if a receiver is blocking a video or audio format.

Streaming quality fluctuates

Use Ethernet where practical—available on Google TV Streamer (4K) and on Apple’s 128GB Wi‑Fi + Ethernet configuration. If you use Wi‑Fi, reduce distance and obstructions between the streamer and the access point, then retest the same title. A stable network cannot overcome a title or subscription that is not offered in 4K, HDR, or a particular audio format.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bottom line

On published specifications, Apple TV 4K offers the most storage flexibility, topping out at 128GB and pairing that capacity with Ethernet; Google TV Streamer (4K) lists 32GB but includes gigabit Ethernet and Google’s discovery and smart-home features. Both publish support for 4K HDR at up to 60 fps, Dolby Vision, HDR10-family formats, and Dolby audio. Pick the device whose exact configuration, must-have apps in your country, and display-and-audio chain match your setup rather than relying on an unsupported claim that one platform is universally faster or has more apps.
