Apple may be working on a way to use four HomePods with Apple TV 4K as a surround system, but the feature is still a rumor based on beta-code clues—not a setup Apple has announced or supports today. Reports describe two speakers at the front and two at the rear; the final speaker roles, hardware compatibility, and release timing remain unknown.
What the four-HomePod rumor says
MacRumors reported on October 6, 2026, that code in audioOS 27.2 and symbols in macOS 27.2 beta depict four speakers in a home-theater context. Earlier reporting described a proposed layout with front-left, front-right, rear-left, and rear-right positions. MacRumors also reported tests using four second-generation HomePods, plus an alternate arrangement with two second-generation HomePods at the front and two unreleased, unidentified speakers at the rear. These are reports about testing, not a confirmed product configuration. MacRumors, October 6, 2026; MacRumors, September 4, 2026

The September code report described clues for room calibration, speaker-position mapping, timing adjustments, bass management, EQ, dialogue enhancement, and movie or music processing modes. Their presence in beta code does not establish which controls, if any, will appear in a released feature.

A September 23 report initially suggested tvOS 27.2 beta supported four HomePods. Its update clarified that leaker pdfu said the selection appeared in tvOS 27.0 and did not yet amount to surround sound. The report also relayed an observation that four HomePods could appear as an audio output, but speaker roles could not be assigned and the same audio played at the front and rear. It noted further limits involving menu and game audio. 9to5Mac, September 23, 2026

MacRumors attributed this beta-era statement to leaker pdfu: “Siri can match a speaker to its surround system.” It is a leaker’s description of beta behavior, not an Apple announcement or proof that channel assignment is complete.
What Apple TV 4K supports today
Apple’s HomePod guide documents using Apple TV 4K with one HomePod or a stereo pair; it does not document a four-speaker system. Apple says HomePod can play video audio in Dolby Atmos and Dolby Digital 7.1 or 5.1 formats, while HomePod mini renders those formats in mono or stereo. Format support should not be confused with a documented four-HomePod surround arrangement. Apple Support: Use HomePod with Apple TV 4K

Set up the documented HomePod or stereo-pair output
- Update Apple TV 4K to the latest tvOS. Use an iPhone running iOS 27 or later, or an iPad running iPadOS 27 or later.
- In the Home app, assign Apple TV and HomePod to the same room.
- Open the Home app’s Apple TV settings, choose Default Audio Output, and select the HomePod or stereo pair.
- Expect this selection to route all Apple TV sound—including navigation clicks—to HomePod.
For this documented setup, Apple advises placing HomePod within 10 inches (25 centimeters) of a wall and close to the TV’s center. For a stereo pair, place one speaker on each side of the TV, about 4 feet (1.2 meters) apart. These instructions are not confirmed placement guidance for the rumored four-speaker mode. Apple Support

Until Apple publishes support details, a four-HomePod configuration should be treated as an unannounced possibility rather than a system to buy or configure around. The reports establish neither a verified four-speaker price nor a final hardware list.
