Choose Apple TV 4K (4th generation) if your household uses Apple services, wants the newest processor, a 128GB Ethernet configuration and planned HomePod mini 2 surround expansion. Choose the Amazon Fire TV Cube (3rd Gen, 2022) if hands-free Alexa, HDMI pass-through and Fire TV smart-home control matter more. Both output 4K HDR video with Dolby Vision and immersive Dolby Atmos audio, so the decision is mainly about ecosystem and control rather than picture quality.

Which one is faster?
Apple TV 4K uses Apple’s A15 Bionic chip, while the Fire TV Cube is a 2022-generation product. That gives Apple the newer documented platform, but there are no independent head-to-head app-launch, navigation or Wi‑Fi stress tests in the available evidence. It would be inaccurate to promise that one is objectively faster in every task. If maximum hardware currency and a larger documented storage option are your priorities, Apple has the clearer specification advantage; choose the Cube for its control and switching features instead of an unverified speed claim.

Picture and sound: effectively a tie on headline formats
Both devices are designed for a 4K television and support Dolby Vision, HDR10+ and Dolby Atmos. Apple specifies Dolby Vision output up to 2160p at 60 frames per second and also lists HDR10 and HLG. Amazon lists 4K Ultra HD at 60fps, Dolby Vision, HDR10+ and Dolby Atmos for the third-generation Cube.
#1 Best Overall
- HD streaming made simple: With America’s number 1 TV streaming platform,* exploring popular apps—plus tons of free movies, shows, and live TV—is as easy as it is fun. *Based on hours streamed—Hypothesis Group
- Compact without compromises: The sleek design of Roku Streaming Stick won’t block neighboring HDMI ports, and it even powers from your TV alone, plugging into the back and staying out of sight. No wall outlet, no extra cords, no clutter.
- No more juggling remotes: Power up your TV, adjust the volume, and control your Roku device with one remote. Use your voice to quickly search, play entertainment, and more.
- Shows on the go: Take your TV to-go when traveling—without needing to log into someone else’s device.
- TV, simplified: With setup that only takes minutes, a simple-to-navigate Home Screen, and an uncluttered remote control that does all you need—Roku makes it easier to watch the TV you love.
Your television, sound system and streaming-service plan still determine what you actually see and hear. A display must support the relevant HDR format, and an Atmos-capable receiver or soundbar is required to reproduce Atmos as immersive audio. Neither box can add HDR or Atmos to equipment that lacks those capabilities.
Apple TV 4K is the better fit for an Apple-centered home
Apple services and Siri
Apple TV is the natural choice when your household already relies on Apple accounts and services. Its USB‑C Siri Remote provides the primary control method. Apple also announced Siri AI for this generation, describing a more conversational assistant with personal-context understanding, broad world knowledge and the ability to take more systemwide app actions. Those capabilities are announced features; their usefulness will depend on the software available when the device ships.

HomePod mini 2 surround expansion
Apple’s launch announcement adds support for four-speaker surround expansion with HomePod mini 2. That makes the box more attractive if you plan to build an Apple-based room-audio system rather than connect only a television speaker or conventional soundbar.

Storage and wired networking
The documented 128GB Wi‑Fi + Ethernet configuration gives Apple a substantial storage option for apps and a Gigabit Ethernet connection for a wired home network. Apple’s specifications do not establish that every retail configuration includes both features, so verify the exact configuration before ordering.

Fire TV Cube is the practical Alexa and HDMI choice
Hands-free voice control
The Cube’s far-field microphone hardware is designed for Alexa commands without picking up a remote. It suits households that already use Alexa for timers, smart-home routines or device control and want the television interface to respond from across the room.
HDMI input and pass-through
An HDMI input lets the Cube sit in front of another HDMI-connected device, such as a cable or satellite box, so you can switch sources through the Fire TV interface and Alexa. This is the decisive feature for viewers who want one voice-controlled hub for streaming and an attached source. Apple TV 4K does not provide an equivalent HDMI input in the documented specifications.

Connectivity and setup requirements
Apple TV 4K
- Confirm that your television has an available HDMI port and supports the resolution and HDR formats you intend to use.
- Budget for an HDMI cable: Apple’s technical requirements explicitly state that the cable is sold separately.
- Connect Apple TV to power and the television, then join Wi‑Fi or connect Gigabit Ethernet on a compatible configuration.
- Sign in with your Apple account and install the streaming apps you use.
- If you are building the announced surround arrangement, place and configure the compatible HomePod mini 2 speakers as your room-audio system.
Fire TV Cube
- Connect the Cube to a television HDMI input and to power.
- For HDMI pass-through, connect the external HDMI source to the Cube’s HDMI input, then connect the Cube’s output to the television.
- Join Wi‑Fi or use Ethernet support for a wired connection.
- Sign in to your Amazon account, pair the remote and enable the Alexa and smart-home controls you want.
- Test source switching and voice pickup from your normal seating position before routing cables permanently.
Do you need an HDMI cable?
Yes, plan to have one for Apple TV 4K. Apple explicitly lists an “HDMI cable (sold separately)” as a requirement, so the advertised $299 price does not include that accessory. Amazon’s published materials do not establish the in-box cable policy for the Fire TV Cube; check the retailer’s package contents for the specific listing you buy rather than assuming either inclusion or omission.

How to choose based on your household
- Pick Apple TV 4K for Apple services, the A15 Bionic platform, the 128GB Wi‑Fi + Ethernet configuration, Gigabit Ethernet, Siri features and planned HomePod mini 2 four-speaker surround.
- Pick Fire TV Cube for far-field Alexa, Fire TV smart-home integration, an HDMI input and voice-controlled switching between streaming and another HDMI source.
- Choose by your existing audio and control system when both boxes will connect to the same 4K HDR television, because the headline Dolby Vision, HDR10+ and Dolby Atmos support is comparable.
- Check total cost by adding Apple’s separately sold HDMI cable and by checking the Cube’s current regional street price, which changes with promotions.
Bottom line
Apple TV 4K (4th generation) is the forward-looking ecosystem pick at $299 in the United States, with an A15 Bionic chip, a documented 128GB Ethernet configuration and Apple’s new Siri direction. Fire TV Cube (3rd Gen, 2022) is the more flexible living-room controller when hands-free Alexa and HDMI pass-through are the features you will use every day. Neither has a documented picture-quality advantage here; buy the one that matches your household’s voice assistant, smart-home platform and connected devices.
