Apple inspects each received trade-in and assesses it for reuse or recycling. Depending on the device and its condition, Apple describes several possible paths: the whole device may be prepared for another owner, usable components may be recovered for replacement parts, or the device or parts may be sent for material recovery. Apple does not publish the destination of each individual trade-in, so an estimate or handoff is not a promise that a particular phone will be refurbished or resold.
How Apple decides what happens to a trade-in
Apple presents Trade In as a way to receive value for an eligible device or recycle a device for free. Its U.S. Trade In page says a received device will be “thoroughly inspected and assessed for reuse or recycling.” That describes a sorting decision, not a guarantee that every phone will be refurbished, resold, or sent to a particular recycling system. These routes preserve different amounts of a product’s original function: whole-device reuse keeps the device in service, parts reuse preserves selected components, and material recovery focuses on materials rather than the device’s original use. Apple’s public figures do not establish which route has the lowest environmental impact for a specific phone; that comparison would require device- and alternative-specific life-cycle evidence.

Does Apple refurbish or recycle every trade-in?
No public Apple source says every trade-in is refurbished, or that every device is recycled by a named robot. Apple describes inspection and assessment, followed by possible reuse, parts recovery, or material recovery. The company’s aggregate reuse total is not a count of Trade In phones alone, and Apple does not publish a breakdown of individual device outcomes.
Apple says devices brought in for free recycling are screened, and eligible devices may be sent to advanced systems including Daisy and Cora. Its broader supply-chain description also names Dave and Taz in disassembly and recovery work. What Apple’s published numbers do—and do not—show
Apple’s 2026 Environmental Progress Report says it sent over 15 million devices and accessories to new owners for reuse in 2025. That company-wide figure covers several collection and reuse programs, not just Apple Trade In. The report also says Trade In was available in 29 countries, while Apple operated or participated in take-back and recycling collection programs in 99 percent of the countries where it sells products. The same report says more than 43,000 metric tons of electronic scrap were directed to recycling facilities in 2025 through customer and employee programs. These corporate-reported totals describe activity at scale, not the destination or material yield of an individual trade-in. Apple’s environmental reporting page describes verification of certain environmental footprint data, but that is not a device-level audit of every trade-in destination. Apple Environment Reports

Can the trade-in value change after inspection?
Yes. On its U.S. program page, Apple says it may revise the value if the device’s condition differs from the description provided. Under the published U.S. terms, the customer can accept or reject a lower revised offer. Eligibility, valuation, credit method, deadlines, and transaction terms can differ by market and transaction, so check the local Trade In page for the terms that apply to your handoff. Apple Trade In
Prepare your device before handing it over
- Back up what you want to keep. Use the backup method that fits your device and account before sending or dropping it off.
- Remove your personal data. Follow Apple’s preparation instructions for your device; downstream inspection does not replace your responsibility to erase it.
- Check the instructions for your market and handoff method. If mailing the device, follow the current packaging and battery-shipping directions on the applicable Trade In page.
- Keep the inspection outcome in mind. For the U.S. program, a condition mismatch may lead to a revised value; review the offer and local terms before completing the transaction. Apple Trade In
What you can know about your phone’s final route
You can know that Apple says it inspects received devices and assesses them for reuse or recycling. You can also see Apple’s reported reuse totals and learn which recycling and disassembly systems it describes. What Apple does not publicly establish is whether your particular phone will be reused whole, contribute parts, or enter material recovery. Treat those outcomes as possibilities, not a trackable promise tied to your individual trade-in.
