Apple Trade In lets you put an eligible device’s estimated value toward a new Apple purchase or receive an Apple Gift Card. The amount is not guaranteed until the device is checked: if its condition or eligibility differs from your description, the offer can change. If it has no trade-in value, Apple says it can still be recycled for free.
How Apple Trade In works
Apple offers online and in-store trade-ins. Online, you identify the device, receive an estimate, and follow Apple’s instructions to send it in. In a store, staff can assess the device. In either case, the estimate is conditional on the device the vendor actually receives and inspects. Apple describes the program as a way to apply value toward a new device, online or at an Apple Store: Apple Trade In.

Online trade-in
Start with Apple’s current trade-in flow for your country and the exact device. If you proceed, follow the provided packaging and shipping instructions and meet the stated deadline. The vendor inspects the device after it arrives; the confirmed value may differ from the estimate.

In-store trade-in
Bring the device to an Apple Store for assessment. Availability and eligibility depend on the device and location, so check with the local Apple Store or regional trade-in page before making plans.

How much will you get?
There is no single trade-in amount that applies to every device. Apple says the value depends on the device, model, manufacturer, and condition. Check the current estimate for your exact device and describe its condition accurately; treat the result as provisional until inspection is complete. Apple’s overview says its program can accept many Apple and third-party devices, including some Samsung and Google smartphones, but eligibility and value vary.
How trade-in credit saves money
Trade-in value can reduce what you pay for an eligible new Apple device, but the payout depends on how you make the purchase. Apple’s US information describes these routes:

These details describe Apple purchase routes; they do not mean trade-in credit is cash in every case or that it applies to purchases from other retailers. To judge whether trading in is worthwhile, compare the confirmed net value with any alternative offer after fees, effort, inspection delays, payout restrictions, and the risk of a condition dispute. The available Apple information does not establish that Apple always offers the best price.
How long the online process takes
Apple’s US FAQ says an online trade-in generally takes 2 to 3 weeks. It also says to send the device within 14 days of receiving the new device, and that the estimate is valid for 14 days after receipt of the new device. These are published US online-process details; check your order instructions and local Apple page for the deadlines that apply to you.

What happens if Apple revises the estimate?
Apple’s US terms say the vendor may change the offer if inspection finds that the device differs from its description, Find My has not been removed, or the device is not received within 14 days of delivery of the trade-in kit. Apple says it will contact you to accept or decline a revised price. The terms say the transaction is final except when you decline the revised value, so read the notice and response instructions promptly if the offer changes.
Prepare your device before handing it over
- Back up what you want to keep. Apple’s terms place responsibility for backing up and deleting your data on you, and say Apple and the vendor are not liable for data left on the device.
- Turn off Find My when required. Follow the instructions for your device; a device with Find My still enabled may receive a revised offer.
- Erase personal data. Use Apple’s device-specific instructions before you ship or hand over the device. Follow the applicable Android-account steps for supported Android devices.
- Follow the trade-in instructions and deadline. Use the shipping or in-store directions supplied for your transaction rather than assuming every device or location follows the same process.
If your device has no trade-in value
Apple says it will recycle an ineligible device for free. That gives you a disposal option, but it does not turn a no-value device into purchase credit.
