If an Apple Threat Notification is genuine, Apple believes your Apple Account or device may have been individually targeted by mercenary spyware. Verify it without using any link in the message: type account.apple.com into your browser, sign in, and look for the notification banner at the top of the account page.

Do not treat an email, text, phone call, sender address, or caller ID as proof. Apple says these alerts are high-confidence warnings, but they are not a forensic report that identifies the attacker or proves exactly what happened to your iPhone.

What an Apple Threat Notification means

Apple Threat Notifications are targeted warnings, not routine security notices sent to every iPhone owner. Apple issues them when its threat intelligence and investigations indicate that a particular person may have been individually targeted by a mercenary spyware attack. Apple describes the alerts as “high-confidence” warnings that should be taken very seriously.

“Mercenary spyware” refers to sophisticated surveillance software sold or operated for hire and used against selected people. Recipients can include journalists, activists, political figures, diplomats, researchers, executives, lawyers, or others whose communications or work may interest a well-funded operator. Receiving an alert does not mean Apple has publicly identified the operator, the country involved, the exact exploit, or the specific data that may have been accessed.

Apple does not publish the technical detection rules behind an individual alert. It says that revealing those details could help attackers modify their methods to avoid detection. Its investigation process cannot provide absolute certainty, so the notification should be understood as a serious risk signal rather than a complete incident report. Apple’s guidance is summarized in About Apple threat notifications and protecting against mercenary spyware (UK English, published August 13, 2026).

Verify the alert without trusting the message

The account-page check is Apple’s specific test for authenticity. Open a browser yourself, enter account.apple.com, and sign in. A genuine threat notification should be clearly visible at the top of the account page. Do not reach that page by tapping a link in an unexpected email, text message, or social-media message.

  1. Close the suspicious message or call. Do not reply, call back using a number supplied in the message, or open an attachment.
  2. Type the address manually. Enter account.apple.com in the browser address bar. Check that the address is exactly Apple’s account domain before entering credentials.
  3. Sign in normally. Use your existing Apple Account credentials and verification method; never provide them to a person who contacted you unexpectedly.
  4. Read the banner at the top of the account page. If Apple has issued a notification for your account, its details and recommended actions should appear there.
  5. Compare the account-page result with the message. If no notification appears, treat the message as unverified and potentially fraudulent, even if it uses Apple logos or an apparently genuine sender address.

Apple also says that a notification may appear directly on the iPhone Lock Screen or in Settings. Those in-device notices can vary by iPhone model and software version, so the account page remains the decisive independent check.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Where a genuine notification can appear

Apple’s current UK English guidance says that, as of 2026, delivery can use several channels. The exact presentation depends on the device and software version.

Location or channel What to expect How much to trust it by itself
iPhone Lock Screen An alert may appear directly on the Lock Screen. Useful indication, but still confirm at account.apple.com.
Settings The notification may be visible in the iPhone’s Settings interface. Confirm through the account page before acting on any message instructions.
Email Apple currently lists [email protected] as the sender. Before April 2025, notification email came from [email protected]. A sender address is not proof; addresses can be spoofed or copied.
Apple Account website A banner appears at the top after you sign in at account.apple.com. This is Apple’s recommended direct verification method.

The sender-address change means that an older message may show the previous address without automatically being fraudulent. Conversely, a message from the current address is not automatically genuine. Verify through the account page rather than relying on the date, branding, or display name.

What to do after Apple confirms the notification

Once the alert is visible after you sign in, treat it as an incident requiring deliberate steps, not as a routine password reminder. Apple strongly recommends seeking expert assistance because the appropriate response depends on your work, contacts, travel, devices, and potential exposure.

1. Follow the instructions shown with the alert

The account-page notification can contain steps specific to the alert. Read those directions carefully and complete them through Apple’s own interfaces. Save a copy of the notification details for your records, but do not forward sensitive information publicly.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Consider Lockdown Mode

Apple may recommend enabling Lockdown Mode. This iPhone security setting reduces certain features and limits some communication and web capabilities in order to reduce the attack surface used by highly sophisticated spyware. It can make everyday functions less convenient, so review the alert’s instructions and your operational needs before enabling it. If Apple specifically tells you to use it, follow the current on-device guidance rather than instructions from an unsolicited caller.

3. Contact an experienced support organization

Apple names Access Now’s Digital Security Helpline as a rapid-response resource for people who receive a threat notification. Its specialists can provide tailored security advice. Apple notes that outside organizations cannot know what internal signal triggered Apple’s alert, but they can help you assess your situation, secure accounts, and plan safer communications.

4. Preserve useful evidence

Keep the original email, message headers when available, screenshots of the account-page notice, and a timeline of unusual events. Store copies somewhere the suspected attacker cannot alter them. Do not click links or open files merely to collect evidence; preserving a suspicious message in its original state is safer than interacting with it.

Requests Apple says a threat notification will never make

Apple says its threat notifications never ask recipients by email or phone to perform any of the following actions:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Click a link supplied in the notification.
  • Open an attached file.
  • Install an app, configuration profile, or other software.
  • Provide an Apple Account password.
  • Provide a two-factor authentication code or other verification code.

A person who claims to be helping with the alert but requests one of these things is not following Apple’s threat-notification process. End the interaction and verify the alert independently at the account page. Never read a verification code aloud to an unexpected caller, even if the caller knows your name or appears to know details about your account.

Security steps Apple recommends for everyone

Whether or not a notification is confirmed, Apple recommends basic protections that reduce the chance of account takeover and opportunistic infection:

How to recognize a scam claiming to be an Apple alert

Apple’s broader social-engineering guidance says to be suspicious of unexpected requests for personal information, security codes, or money. Caller ID can be spoofed, so a call that appears to come from Apple is not authenticated by the number shown on your screen. The same caution applies to display names and logos in email.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the account-page verification as the specific test for a Threat Notification. If the banner is absent, do not “fix” the problem by installing a profile, downloading a security app, allowing remote access, or paying a caller. Contact Apple through a channel you locate independently if you need general support; do not use contact details supplied by the unexpected message. Apple’s scam guidance is available at Recognize and avoid social engineering schemes including phishing messages, phony support calls, and other scams.

What the notification does—and does not—tell you

It indicates possible individual targeting

The warning concerns possible targeting of you or your account by mercenary spyware. It is not a general statement that every iPhone in your region is infected, and it is not an ordinary operating-system update notice.

It does not identify the attacker

Apple does not publicly attribute an alert to a particular government, company, criminal group, or country in the notification guidance. Do not infer attribution from your nationality, travel history, profession, or the language of the message.

It does not prove what happened to the device

The public guidance does not establish whether a particular iPhone was successfully compromised, which exploit was attempted, whether data was accessed, or when an intrusion occurred. Apple’s alert is a high-confidence warning based on information it does not fully disclose, not a device-forensics report.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It is not evidence that every account is compromised

A confirmed alert justifies urgent expert advice and protective action. It does not, by itself, prove that your email, cloud files, contacts, or other services were accessed. A specialist can help determine what additional accounts and devices should be reviewed.

How common are these notifications?

Apple says it has notified users in more than 150 countries since 2021. That cumulative figure is reported in Apple’s threat-notification support guidance; it is not a claim that notifications are evenly distributed among countries or that a particular region is currently experiencing an outbreak. Apple does not publish enough public detail to calculate the probability that any individual iPhone owner will receive one.

A practical decision checklist

What you see Best next action
A banner at the top of account.apple.com after you sign in Treat it as confirmed, follow the displayed steps, consider Lockdown Mode, and seek expert help.
An email or text but no account-page banner Do not trust or interact with it; preserve it as possible phishing and use independently located support if needed.
A caller asking for a password, code, installation, or payment End the call. Caller ID is not proof, and those requests are inconsistent with Apple’s notification process.
A Lock Screen or Settings notice that you have not checked online Verify by typing account.apple.com yourself before taking further action.

Bottom line for an iPhone recipient

An Apple Threat Notification is serious because Apple believes you may have been individually targeted by mercenary spyware. The safe response is equally specific: manually open account.apple.com, confirm whether the banner exists, reject any request for credentials or installations, apply Apple’s security recommendations, and obtain expert assistance if the alert is real. Do not expect the notification to name an attacker or explain the complete technical history of your phone; those details are not provided publicly.
