Compare Apple with technology peers by comparing the businesses that produce their earnings—not by lining up ticker prices or a single valuation multiple. Start with each company’s products and revenue model, align fiscal periods, then examine growth, margins, cash generation, reinvestment, balance-sheet commitments, per-share results, valuation and company-specific risks. Apple’s latest annual filing covers a hardware-and-services company for the year ended September 27, 2025; Microsoft’s covers the year ended June 30, 2025; Meta’s covers the year ended December 31, 2025. Those dates are not a synchronized market snapshot, and the filings do not establish October 2026 prices, market capitalizations or valuation multiples.
Why a headline Apple-versus-peer comparison can mislead
A stock represents a claim on a business, so the first comparison is economic: what does each company sell, who pays, how often do they pay, and what must the company spend to keep those sales growing? Apple combines devices with services. Microsoft operates a broad software, cloud and technology portfolio. Meta and Amazon have different mixes of advertising, digital services, commerce and infrastructure. A revenue total can look similar while the recurring nature of sales, customer concentration, gross margin, capital intensity and competitive pressure differ substantially.

“The Company’s products and services are offered in highly competitive global markets,” Apple says in its FY2025 Form 10-K. That statement is a useful reminder that brand recognition does not remove execution, pricing, supply-chain or regulatory risk. The same comparison discipline should be applied to every peer rather than assuming that all large technology companies have the same economics.
First align the periods you are comparing
Put the fiscal period beside every figure. A trailing twelve-month number, a fiscal-year result and a calendar-year result are not interchangeable.

| Company | Latest filing period in the supplied evidence | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Apple | FY2025 ended September 27, 2025 | Label revenue, profit and cash figures as Apple FY2025. |
| Microsoft | FY2025 ended June 30, 2025 | Label figures as Microsoft FY2025; its year ends nearly three months before Apple’s. |
| Meta | FY2025 ended December 31, 2025 | Label figures as Meta FY2025; this period extends beyond both Apple’s and Microsoft’s year ends. |
| Amazon | Comparable operating figures were not provided in the evidence | Retrieve Amazon’s latest annual or quarterly filing and use its stated period before calculating ratios. |
For a cleaner comparison, either use each company’s latest fiscal year and disclose the different end dates, or convert all companies to a common trailing-twelve-month period from a market-data or filing source. Do not combine Apple’s fiscal-year revenue with a peer’s forward estimate without labeling the difference.
Compare what each company sells and how it earns
Build a business-model map before looking at multiples. For each company, identify the major product or service categories, whether customers pay once or repeatedly, the geographic mix, and the costs required to deliver the offering.
| Business question | Apple | Microsoft | Meta | Amazon |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Primary economic mix | Hardware products plus services, according to its FY2025 filing | Use the FY2025 filing to separate software, cloud and other technology activities | Use the FY2025 filing to identify advertising and other reported activities | Use the latest filing to separate commerce, cloud and other activities |
| Recurring-revenue exposure | Services are recurring or repeat-use in nature; hardware purchases are more cyclical and replacement-dependent | Determine the proportion of subscriptions, cloud consumption and other repeat contracts from the filing | Determine how much revenue depends on repeat advertising demand and the terms of that demand | Determine the mix of repeat customer activity, subscriptions, commerce and infrastructure usage |
| Key customer or demand question | Can Apple maintain installed-base engagement, pricing and upgrade demand? | Can Microsoft convert enterprise relationships and AI investment into durable usage and profit? | Can Meta sustain advertiser demand while funding new products and infrastructure? | Can Amazon grow multiple businesses while preserving retail and infrastructure economics? |
The table is a framework, not a claim that the companies have equal segment definitions. Read the segment notes in each filing because one company’s “service” or “cloud” category may include activities another company reports elsewhere.

Measure revenue growth by source, not just percentage
Calculate year-over-year growth for total revenue and for each material segment using the same accounting basis. Then explain the change. Growth from higher unit volume has different durability from growth caused by price increases, currency translation, an acquisition or a one-time comparison base.

Questions to ask about Apple
- How much of the change came from products versus services?
- Were changes driven by unit volume, average selling price, mix, foreign exchange or a product launch cycle?
- Did international sales, which Apple says represent a majority of total net sales, help or hurt the reported result through currency movements?
Questions to ask about Microsoft, Meta and Amazon
- Which reported businesses supplied the growth, and are those businesses recurring, usage-based or transaction-based?
- Was growth organic, or did acquisitions, divestitures or accounting changes affect the comparison?
- Did management increase spending ahead of demand, and is that spending visible in margins or cash flow?
Do not infer a company’s quality from revenue growth alone. A fast-growing segment can consume substantial cash, while a slower segment can fund the group’s investment and shareholder returns.
Put profitability beside growth
Use operating margin, gross margin where the definitions are comparable, and net income only after understanding unusual items. Gross margin shows how much remains after direct costs; operating margin also reflects research, sales, administration and other operating expenses. If one company presents a non-GAAP margin and another presents GAAP, show both bases separately rather than treating them as equivalent.
| Metric | What it answers | How to compare safely |
|---|---|---|
| Gross margin | How much revenue remains after direct costs | Check segment mix, fulfillment treatment, depreciation and accounting definitions. |
| Operating margin | How efficiently the whole operating model converts revenue into operating profit | Use the same GAAP or consistently reconciled non-GAAP basis and the same period. |
| Incremental operating margin | How much of additional revenue becomes additional operating profit | Calculate from two comparable periods and investigate acquisitions, restructuring and currency effects. |
| Net margin | What remains after interest, taxes and non-operating items | Separate operating performance from financing, tax-rate and investment gains or losses. |
A mature device-and-services company may show a different margin pattern from a business investing heavily in cloud capacity or artificial-intelligence infrastructure. Compare the reason for the margin, not only the level.
Follow operating cash flow and free cash flow
Accounting profit does not automatically equal spendable cash. Start with operating cash flow, then subtract capital expenditures to obtain a clearly defined free-cash-flow measure. State whether capital expenditures include only purchases of property and equipment or also other investments; companies and data providers can use different definitions.

- Reconcile profit to operating cash flow. Look for working-capital movements, stock-based compensation, deferred revenue and other non-cash adjustments.
- Identify capital spending. Separate maintenance spending from expansion where the filing provides that detail, and note when the company does not provide the split.
- Calculate cash conversion. Divide operating cash flow by net income, then investigate large changes rather than treating a single year as normal.
- Test durability. Compare at least three periods when available and check whether cash generation survives a slower growth year.
Apple’s hardware supply chain can create inventory and component commitments, while cloud and infrastructure expansion at another company can require large upfront outlays. Those differences make free-cash-flow yield more informative when paired with the investment required to sustain growth.
Account for reinvestment needs
Two companies can produce the same operating cash flow while leaving very different amounts available to shareholders because their growth plans require different spending.
- Research and development: track absolute spending and spending as a percentage of revenue. A rising ratio may indicate a deliberate investment cycle rather than deteriorating efficiency.
- Capital expenditures: examine data centers, manufacturing equipment, tooling, stores and other property investments. Capital intensity should be compared with the revenue and cash those assets are expected to produce.
- Working capital: monitor inventory, receivables, payables and deferred revenue. Rapid growth can consume cash even when reported profit rises.
- Acquisitions and investments: include cash paid for acquisitions and strategic investments when assessing the resources needed to maintain the business model.
Do not label a company “cash rich” without asking how much of its cash must be reinvested. A high-growth company with heavy infrastructure spending may have less distributable cash than a slower company with lower ongoing requirements.

Apple-specific balance-sheet questions
- How much liquidity is available after considering debt, commercial paper, leases and purchase commitments?
- Could supply-chain disruption or tariffs increase inventory, component or logistics costs before the company can change prices?
- Does the geographic concentration of manufacturing partners create a dependence that is not visible in a consolidated cash figure?
Peer balance-sheet questions
- For Microsoft, how do cloud and AI infrastructure commitments affect future capital needs and operating leverage?
- For Meta and Amazon, what obligations and investment programs are disclosed in their latest filings, and how sensitive are they to slower demand?
- For every company, are cash, debt and investments reported on a comparable date, or are you mixing quarter ends?
Apple says much of its manufacturing is performed by outsourcing partners, with a significant majority performed in whole or in part by partners primarily located in several Asian countries. That arrangement can reduce owned manufacturing assets while increasing exposure to partner concentration, logistics and trade policy.
Interpret share counts and per-share results together
Per-share earnings and cash flow depend on both company performance and the number of shares outstanding. A company can increase total profit while producing less growth per share if dilution is faster than profit growth; buybacks can have the opposite effect.
- Use diluted weighted-average shares for an income-statement per-share calculation and distinguish them from period-end shares outstanding.
- Separate employee stock compensation and acquisition-related issuance from open-market repurchases.
- Check whether buybacks were funded by operating cash flow, new debt or asset sales.
- Compare the change in diluted shares with the change in total earnings before judging per-share progress.
Amazon’s FY2025 Form 10-K reports 10,734,920,870 common shares outstanding as of January 28, 2026. That is a dated filing figure, not a current October 2026 share count and not a market-capitalization calculation. Obtain each company’s share count on the same valuation date before comparing market capitalization.

A valuation multiple is meaningful only when its price date, financial period and denominator are explicit. The reviewed filings do not establish synchronized October 2026 share prices, market capitalizations, consensus forecasts or valuation multiples, so those figures must come from a fresh market-data source before publication or investment analysis.
Best Value
| Measure | Formula | Best use | Main caution |
|---|---|---|---|
| Price-to-earnings | Share price ÷ earnings per share | Comparing profitable companies with similar accounting periods | Distorted by unusual tax, investment or restructuring items and by different growth rates. |
| Enterprise value to operating profit | Enterprise value ÷ EBIT or operating income | Comparing businesses with different debt and cash levels | Definitions of enterprise value and operating profit must match. |
| Enterprise value to sales | Enterprise value ÷ revenue | Early-stage or low-profit businesses | Ignores margin and capital intensity; a lower ratio is not automatically cheaper economically. |
| Free-cash-flow yield | Free cash flow ÷ market capitalization | Assessing cash generation relative to equity value | Free cash flow must use a consistent definition and a normalized period. |
Market capitalization is a price-times-share-count snapshot, not a measure of business quality. A lower multiple can reflect slower growth, weaker margins, greater reinvestment, higher balance-sheet risk or a more exposed competitive position. Relate every multiple to growth, profitability, cash conversion and risk.
Separate company-specific risks
Apple
Apple identifies macroeconomic conditions, global operations, trade restrictions and tariffs, competitive pressure, product introductions and transitions, component sourcing, regulation and other factors that can affect demand, costs, sales and gross margins. It says tariffs and other trade measures can affect its supply chain, component availability, prices and gross margin, with the ultimate impact depending on future measures and responses. International sales represent a majority of total net sales, adding foreign-exchange and regional-demand considerations.
Microsoft
Microsoft’s FY2025 filing describes AI technology and services as a highly competitive and rapidly evolving market. When comparing Microsoft with Apple, ask whether AI investment is translating into durable customer adoption and profit, and how quickly competitors or technological change could alter that opportunity. Do not assume Apple’s supply-chain risks or Microsoft’s AI risks apply equally to every peer.
Meta and Amazon
Use each company’s own latest filing to identify its principal competitive, regulatory, operational and investment exposures. The available evidence does not establish a synchronized risk ranking for Meta, Amazon or any other technology issuer. Avoid importing one company’s risk disclosures into another company’s analysis.
A repeatable Apple-versus-peer comparison workflow
- Choose the peer set. Record why each company belongs in the comparison and acknowledge differences in business model.
- Set the measurement date. Use fiscal periods for operating results and one clearly stated market date for share prices, share counts and valuation.
- Build the business map. List products, services, customer types, geographic exposure and recurring versus transactional revenue.
- Normalize the financial statements. Collect revenue, operating income, gross profit, operating cash flow, capital expenditures, free cash flow, research and development and diluted shares.
- Explain the change. Attribute growth and margin movement to volume, price, mix, currency, acquisitions, investment or unusual items.
- Stress-test cash needs. Consider a slower-growth case, higher input or infrastructure costs and working-capital pressure.
- Calculate valuation. Use consistent GAAP or clearly reconciled measures and write the price date beside every multiple.
- Write the risk case. Tie each risk to a disclosed exposure and identify which metric would show deterioration.
- Reach a conditional conclusion. State which type of investor or business objective each profile may suit, without converting the framework into a buy, sell or “best stock” call.
Common comparison mistakes
- Using ticker prices: A $200 share is not necessarily more expensive than a $50 share; share count determines equity value.
- Mixing fiscal and calendar years: Apple, Microsoft and Meta have different year ends in the cited filings.
- Comparing non-GAAP with GAAP: Stock compensation, amortization and restructuring can materially change the result.
- Ignoring reinvestment: Revenue growth funded by heavy capital spending may produce less distributable cash.
- Treating buybacks as automatic value creation: Repurchases can improve per-share figures, but the price paid and funding source matter.
- Calling a low multiple a bargain: A discount may compensate for weaker growth, lower margins or greater risk.
- Presenting dated filing data as current: Amazon’s January 28, 2026 share count and all fiscal-year figures have specific measurement dates.
- Generalizing risk: Apple’s tariff exposure and Microsoft’s rapidly changing AI market illustrate different risk mechanisms, not a universal Big Tech risk list.
What a sound conclusion should say
A defensible Apple-versus-peer analysis does not declare a winner from a single ratio. It explains how each company earns money, whether growth is profitable and cash-generative, what reinvestment is required, how balance-sheet obligations affect resilience, how share-count changes affect owners and what price is being paid for those characteristics on a stated date. Because the available filings do not provide synchronized October 2026 market data, any current valuation conclusion requires updated prices, share counts and forecasts before it can be responsibly stated.
