Apple pays a quarterly cash dividend and routinely repurchases its own shares. Apple reported a dividend of $0.27 per share as of June 27, 2026, and says it intends to raise the dividend annually when its board declares an increase. In fiscal 2025, Apple repurchased $89.3 billion of common stock and paid $15.4 billion in dividends and dividend equivalents. The two programs work differently: a dividend sends cash to each shareholder, while a completed buyback reduces the number of shares outstanding. Neither figure, by itself, tells you whether Apple stock is attractively valued.
Apple’s dividend and buyback programs at a glance
Apple returns capital through two channels: regular cash dividends and share repurchases. The dividend is a per-share payment declared by Apple’s board of directors. A repurchase uses company cash to buy Apple shares, usually in open-market or privately negotiated transactions. Repurchased shares can be retired or otherwise removed from the outstanding share count, depending on the transaction and accounting treatment.

|---|---|---|---|
| Quarterly cash dividend | $0.27 per share | June 27, 2026 | Amount reported in Apple’s fiscal 2026 third-quarter Form 10-Q; future payments still require board declarations. |
| Fiscal 2025 repurchases | $89.3 billion | Fiscal year 2025 | Total common-stock repurchases during the year. |
| Fiscal 2025 dividends and dividend equivalents | $15.4 billion | Fiscal year 2025 | Total cash returned through dividends and dividend equivalents during the year. |
| Fiscal 2025 shares repurchased | 402 million shares | Fiscal year 2025 | Number of common shares Apple reported repurchasing during the year. |
| New repurchase authorization | Up to $100 billion | Announced May 2025 | Maximum authorized amount; it is not a promise to spend the full amount. |
| Fiscal 2026 Q1 repurchases | $25.0 billion and 93 million shares | Quarter ended in Q1 fiscal 2026 | Quarter-specific activity, not an annual spending rate. |
| Fiscal 2026 Q3 repurchases | $25.8 billion | Quarter ended June 27, 2026 | Quarter-specific repurchase spending. |
| Fiscal 2026 Q3 dividends and dividend equivalents | $4.0 billion | Quarter ended June 27, 2026 | Cash returned through dividends and dividend equivalents in that quarter. |
Apple reports on a fiscal calendar, so always label a number as fiscal-year or quarter data. A quarterly amount should not be presented as a recurring annual run rate unless Apple or the analyst explicitly makes that calculation.

Yes. Apple pays a cash dividend to shareholders of record after its board declares the payment. The amount is quoted per share, so the cash you receive depends on how many shares you own on the relevant record date. A shareholder with 100 shares receiving a $0.27-per-share dividend would be entitled to $27 before any applicable tax withholding, provided the shares qualify for that payment.

Apple’s stated policy on increases
Apple’s fiscal 2025 Form 10-K states: “The Company intends to increase its dividend on an annual basis, subject to declaration by the Board of Directors.” The sentence expresses management’s intention, not a contractual guarantee. Each increase must be approved and declared by the board, and the declaration establishes the amount, record date, ex-dividend date and payment date.
How the dividend amount has changed in the reported periods
Apple’s fiscal 2025 filing recorded a quarterly dividend of $0.26 per share at September 27, 2025. Its fiscal 2026 third-quarter filing recorded $0.27 per share at June 27, 2026. These are reported per-share amounts for the specified dates, not a promise that every future quarter will use the same amount.

Four dates determine whether a purchase qualifies for a particular dividend:

- Declaration date: Apple’s board announces the dividend, including the per-share amount and the applicable dates.
- Ex-dividend date: The stock begins trading without the right to the newly declared dividend. Buying on or after this date generally means the payment goes to the seller rather than the buyer under standard U.S. settlement rules.
- Record date: Apple identifies shareholders entitled to receive the dividend.
- Payment date: The cash is sent through the investor’s broker or transfer agent.
Dates can change from one declaration to the next. For a current payment calendar, use Apple’s latest board announcement and confirm the dates with your broker. Do not infer a future ex-dividend or payment date from an older quarter.
What investors should check before buying for a dividend
- Confirm the exact per-share amount in the current declaration.
- Check the ex-dividend date rather than relying only on the payment date.
- Verify how your broker handles settlement, dividend reinvestment and fractional shares.
- Consider the tax treatment in your country and account type.
- Remember that a stock’s price can move by more than the dividend amount for many reasons; buying solely to capture a payment is not a risk-free strategy.
Does Apple buy back its own stock?
Yes. Apple has an active share-repurchase program and reported buying back $89.3 billion of common stock and 402 million shares in fiscal 2025. In May 2025, Apple announced a new authorization of up to $100 billion.
The authorization is a ceiling, not a spending obligation
Apple’s fiscal 2025 Form 10-K says: “The program does not obligate the Company to acquire a minimum amount of shares.” This qualification is essential. The $100 billion figure is the maximum authorized capacity under that announcement, not cash Apple must spend, a schedule of purchases, or a forecast of the next year’s buybacks. Apple can slow, pause or stop repurchases as market conditions, liquidity needs, regulations or board decisions change.

How Apple can execute repurchases
The same filing says Apple may purchase shares in privately negotiated or open-market transactions, including plans that comply with Rule 10b5-1 under the Securities Exchange Act. The method and timing can vary. A company may spread purchases across many trading days rather than buy the entire authorization at once.
Apple’s reported capital returns by period
The figures below keep annual and quarterly reporting separate so that a single quarter is not mistaken for a full-year trend.
| Reporting period | Common-stock repurchases | Shares repurchased | Dividends and dividend equivalents |

| Fiscal 2026 Q1 | $25.0 billion | 93 million | Not stated in the cited filing summary |
| Fiscal 2026 Q3 | $25.8 billion | Not stated in the cited filing summary | $4.0 billion |
Apple’s filings may provide additional detail for other quarters, but the figures above are limited to the periods and amounts identified in the cited documents. They should not be added together unless the periods are known to be non-overlapping and the filing definitions match.

Dividend versus buyback: the practical differences
| Comparison | Dividend | Share repurchase |
|---|---|---|
| Who receives value immediately? | Shareholders receive cash in proportion to their shares. | Shareholders who sell into the program receive cash; continuing holders generally do not receive a direct payment. |
| Board action | Every payment requires a board declaration. | The board authorizes a program, but Apple is not required to buy a minimum amount. |
| Effect on share count | Does not mechanically reduce the number of shares outstanding. | Completed purchases reduce shares outstanding when the repurchased shares are retired or otherwise removed from circulation. |
| Timing flexibility | Usually follows a regular quarterly schedule after declaration. | Can vary with market prices, trading conditions, cash needs and management decisions. |
| Per-share effect | Transfers cash without changing the denominator used for earnings per share. | Can reduce the share-count denominator, which may increase earnings per share if net income is unchanged. |
| Investor choice | All eligible holders receive the declared amount unless they sell before the relevant cutoff. | Investors choose whether to sell; holders who do not sell retain their shares. |
Are Apple buybacks better than dividends?
There is no universal winner. The better tool depends on the investor’s objective, tax situation, valuation view and need for cash.
Why an investor might prefer dividends
- Predictable cash flow: A declared dividend provides a visible per-share payment and a published payment date.
- No sale required: You receive cash without reducing your share position.
- Simple budgeting: Investors can estimate cash income from the number of shares owned and the declared amount.
- Clear board commitment: A declared payment is an obligation to make that specific payment, subject to the company’s stated terms and normal corporate processes.
Why an investor might prefer buybacks
- Potentially greater flexibility: Apple can adjust repurchase activity instead of committing to a fixed payment every quarter.
- Share-count reduction: Buying and retiring shares can increase each remaining share’s proportional ownership of the company.
- Investor control over timing: A holder can decide when to sell rather than receive a mandatory distribution.
- Tax timing may differ: In some jurisdictions, selling shares can defer tax until a sale, while dividends may be taxable when paid. The result depends on local law, holding period and account type.
Why a buyback can still be a poor use of cash
A repurchase is not automatically value-creating. If a company buys shares at prices above their long-term worth, the remaining shareholders may receive less benefit than if the cash had been retained, invested, used to reduce obligations or distributed as dividends. A lower share count can mechanically lift earnings per share even when the underlying business is not growing. Investors should therefore examine cash generation, operating performance, the price paid for repurchased shares and the company’s other capital needs rather than treating a large authorization as proof that the stock is cheap.
How buybacks affect earnings per share
Earnings per share is commonly calculated as net income divided by the applicable weighted-average share count. A completed repurchase can reduce that denominator. For example, if net income stayed constant while the weighted-average share count fell, reported earnings per share would rise mechanically. That does not guarantee a higher stock price, stronger revenue, better margins or improved intrinsic value.
Best Value
The effect also depends on timing. Shares bought late in a reporting period may affect the weighted-average count less than shares bought early in that period. Investors should use the share-count disclosures in Apple’s financial statements rather than assume that every repurchased share changes the entire year’s calculation.
How to interpret Apple’s $100 billion authorization
Use the authorization as evidence that Apple’s board approved capacity for future repurchases, not as a forecast of actual spending. To assess progress, track three separate items in subsequent filings:
- Authorization remaining: How much capacity Apple says is still available.
- Cash spent: The dollar amount of common stock repurchased in the reporting period.
- Shares acquired: The number of shares bought and the average price or related details when disclosed.
Comparing dollars alone can mislead. Spending $25.8 billion in one quarter does not indicate how many shares were acquired without considering the average purchase price. Conversely, a high share count can reflect lower prices rather than a larger strategic commitment.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →A step-by-step way to check Apple’s current dividend
- Start with Apple’s investor-relations site. Use its official dividend history and recent financial releases rather than an undated third-party chart.
- Open the latest board declaration. Record the per-share amount, declaration date, record date, ex-dividend date and payment date.
- Confirm the fiscal period. Apple’s fiscal quarters do not map perfectly to calendar quarters, so note the filing’s exact end date.
- Read the latest Form 10-Q or Form 10-K. Check whether the filing reports a different dividend amount, any declared-but-unpaid dividend and the company’s wording about future increases.
- Check your account position. Your broker’s share count, settlement status and dividend-election settings determine how the payment is credited.
- Calculate the gross cash. Multiply eligible shares by the declared per-share dividend before withholding or other deductions.
A step-by-step way to evaluate Apple’s buybacks
- Identify the authorization. Note the announcement date, maximum amount and the explicit statement that Apple has no minimum purchase obligation.
- Read the latest filing’s repurchase table. Separate shares purchased from dollars spent, and distinguish open-market purchases from other transactions when the filing does.
- Compare periods on the same basis. Put fiscal-year data beside fiscal-year data and quarter data beside quarter data.
- Review the share count. Check basic and diluted weighted-average shares, shares outstanding and the effect of employee compensation or other issuances.
- Assess the price paid. A large dollar amount can represent fewer shares when Apple’s market price is higher.
- Test the business case. Ask whether cash used for repurchases appears consistent with investment, liquidity and other shareholder-return priorities.
Common mistakes when reading Apple’s capital-return figures
- Calling the authorization a guarantee: “Up to $100 billion” is not the same as “Apple will spend $100 billion.”
- Annualizing one quarter: The $25.8 billion reported for fiscal 2026 Q3 is a period result, not an announced yearly pace.
- Confusing dividends with dividend yield: A $0.27 quarterly payment is a cash amount per share. Yield requires a share price and an annualized methodology.
- Treating a dividend intention as a promise: Apple says annual increases are intended, but each increase remains subject to board declaration.
- Assuming every buyback raises value: Share-count reduction and higher earnings per share do not prove that Apple bought at an attractive price.
- Ignoring fiscal dates: Apple’s fiscal year and quarters should be identified explicitly when comparing figures.
- Adding incompatible totals: Do not combine repurchases or dividends from overlapping periods or from filings that use different definitions.
- Forgetting taxes and withholding: The amount credited to an account can differ from the gross dividend because of jurisdiction, account type and tax status.
What investors should monitor next
For an up-to-date view, monitor Apple’s next board dividend declaration, the latest Form 10-Q or Form 10-K, the remaining repurchase authorization and the reported share count. The most informative questions are:
- Did the board declare the next quarterly dividend, and did the per-share amount change?
- How much did Apple spend on repurchases during the latest fiscal period?
- How many shares did those dollars purchase?
- What authorization remains, and does Apple repeat that it has no minimum purchase obligation?
- How did the diluted share count change after repurchases and share-based compensation?
- Are capital returns being reported for a full fiscal year or only one quarter?
Apple’s investor-relations hub provides the official dividend history, capital-return history, quarterly financial statements, SEC filings and annual reports. Those documents are the appropriate place to refresh a calendar or update a comparison after a new declaration.
Bottom line for Apple investors
Apple pays a regular cash dividend and also returns substantial capital through discretionary share repurchases. The reported dividend was $0.27 per share at June 27, 2026. Fiscal 2025 returns included $89.3 billion of repurchases, 402 million shares bought and $15.4 billion of dividends and dividend equivalents. The May 2025 authorization allowed up to $100 billion in additional repurchases but imposed no minimum purchase requirement. Dividends offer direct, visible cash; buybacks can reduce the share count and give management more timing flexibility. Evaluate both using the exact fiscal period, shares purchased, dollars spent and board declarations—not the authorization headline alone.
