Choose ESPN if you want scores as part of a larger sports service. ESPN adds breaking news, highlights, audio, live and on-demand video, personalized teams and leagues, and Live Activities on the Lock Screen and Dynamic Island. Neither choice is permanently superior for every league or country. Apple expanded coverage after its 2024 launch, including seven additional countries in a September 2025 update, while ESPN’s viewing rights and features can vary by event and region. What Apple Sports is designed to do
Apple Sports is a score-first iPhone app. Apple describes it as an experience designed for speed and simplicity, with a scoreboard that you shape by following teams, tournaments and leagues. A game page can include the score, team statistics, a box score, play-by-play, lineup information and betting odds where those details are available.

Secure, low-profile, and comfortable for workouts, all-day wear or overnight sleeping. The ultra-slim profile sits flush in your ear with no hard edges poking or rubbing, so you can even sleep on your side without discomfort.
- [Immersive Stereo Sound with TOZO OrigX Technology] TOZO OrigX tuning delivers clear vocals, balanced mids, and natural stereo sound for music, podcasts, and videos.
- [Long Battery Life for Daily Use] Get up to 7 hours of playtime on a single charge, with up to 32 hours total using the charging case—ideal for workdays, commuting, and extended listening sessions.

- [Deep Bass with Clear Vocals] High-performance drivers produce punchy bass while keeping vocals clean and detailed for everyday listening.
The app is most useful when you already know what you want to monitor. Instead of opening a general sports news feed and searching for a match, you open your scoreboard and see followed competitions in one place. That approach reduces the number of taps needed to check a result or a game in progress, particularly when several teams are playing at once.
Apple Sports favorites also sync with Apple TV and Apple News. Following a team in Sports can therefore influence the teams surfaced in those Apple experiences, rather than creating a completely separate list on each device.
Where Apple Sports has an edge
- A focused scoreboard with less material competing for attention.
- Real-time scores, statistics and play-by-play in the same game view.
- Lineups and odds where Apple has the relevant data for that competition.
- Live Activities on the iPhone Lock Screen and Apple Watch.
- Widgets and the ability to schedule Live Activities in Apple’s September 2025 update.
What ESPN adds beyond scores
ESPN treats scores as one part of a broader sports platform. Its official app description includes scores, alerts, highlights, live play-by-play, radio, podcasts, live events, on-demand events and ESPN+ programming. The service also supports personalized teams, leagues and players, a where-to-watch guide, and Live Activities.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
That breadth matters if you move from checking a score to understanding the game. You can start with an alert, read a news item, watch a highlight, listen to radio or a podcast, and look for a live broadcast without changing sports services. The trade-off is a busier interface: readers who only want a number and a game clock may find ESPN’s news and video surfaces more than they need.
Where ESPN has an edge
- Breaking news and highlights alongside scores.
- Live and on-demand video, radio and podcasts.
- Personalized teams, leagues and players.
- Live Activities on the iPhone Lock Screen and Dynamic Island.
- A where-to-watch guide and ESPN+ programming within the same app.
- Multiview that can display up to four games simultaneously where the feature is supported.
Live scores: speed versus information density
For a reader asking only “What is the score right now?”, Apple Sports is the stronger choice. Its stated design goal is speed and simplicity, and its main screen is organized around followed competitions. The app does not need to win a contest for the most articles or clips; it needs to expose the current score and game state quickly.

ESPN is the better choice when the score is the start of a wider information search. Its score pages and live play-by-play can sit beside news, highlights and programming, which is useful during a major event or a busy sports day. It can also be more practical when you want to continue from a score into a broadcast or analysis.
“Faster” is not a universal promise. Data delivery can vary by sport, competition, region, network conditions and the provider supplying the feed. Both apps are updated frequently, so a feature or supported competition can change after you install the app.

Alerts and Live Activities on an iPhone
Apple Sports alerts
Apple Sports Live Activities can show live scores and play updates on the iPhone Lock Screen. When an Apple Watch is paired, Apple also documents Live Activities there, giving you a glanceable update without opening the phone. Apple later added widgets and advance scheduling for Live Activities, allowing you to prepare an activity for a game rather than waiting until you are already watching it.
Apple Sports is therefore a good fit if you want a single, persistent game status rather than a stream of separate notifications. Follow the relevant team, tournament or league, then use the app’s Live Activity controls for the games you want to keep visible. The exact competitions and available update types depend on Apple’s current coverage.
ESPN alerts
ESPN supports Live Activities on the iPhone Lock Screen and Dynamic Island. Its app also provides alert controls in settings, so you can choose which teams, leagues or event types can interrupt you. The available controls and labels can change as ESPN updates the app, but the important distinction is that ESPN offers more granular alert management than a simple all-or-nothing scoreboard.

Dynamic Island support is especially useful on compatible iPhone models: a game can remain visible in the compact status area while you use another app. Lock Screen Live Activities provide the same glanceable idea on supported iPhones without requiring you to open ESPN.
Which alert system should you choose?
| If you want… | Choose |
|---|---|
| A minimal score view on the Lock Screen and Apple Watch | Apple Sports |
| A Lock Screen activity plus Dynamic Island support | ESPN |
| Alerts combined with news, highlights or programming notices | ESPN |
| Widgets and scheduled Live Activities in Apple’s current implementation | Apple Sports |
How to set up Apple Sports for a scoreboard
- Install and open Apple Sports on your iPhone.
- Select the teams, tournaments and leagues you care about. Start with a small set; you can add more later.
- Open a followed game to review its score, statistics, play-by-play, lineup information and any available odds.
- Use the app’s Live Activity controls for games that should remain visible on the Lock Screen or Apple Watch.
- Check the widget options and advance scheduling controls if you want a game to appear before it begins.
- Review your followed teams in Apple TV and Apple News after setup; Apple says these favorites can sync across those services.
Apple’s coverage is not identical everywhere. Its 2024 launch announcement listed an initial set of leagues and regions, while the September 2025 update documented additional competitions, widgets, expanded countries and other changes. If a league is missing, that may reflect current availability rather than a problem with your phone.
How to set up ESPN for scores and alerts
- Install and open the ESPN app on your iPhone.
- Choose the teams, leagues and players you want to personalize. This determines which score, news and alert items are easiest to find.
- Open a live game for its score and play-by-play. Use the game’s available media links when you want highlights, radio or video.
- Open ESPN’s app settings and review alert controls. Enable only the teams and event types that matter so a busy sports calendar does not become notification overload.
- Enable Live Activities when prompted or through the iPhone’s notification settings, then verify that the Lock Screen and Dynamic Island show the games you selected.
- Use the where-to-watch guide to check whether a game is available through ESPN, ESPN+ or a qualifying television provider.
Some ESPN viewing requires a qualifying TV-provider login or plan. That requirement applies to particular live or on-demand content, not to the basic idea of opening the app to check scores. ESPN+ programming and event rights also vary, so read the access prompt for the specific game instead of assuming that one subscription unlocks every event.
Coverage, countries and changing availability
Coverage is the comparison’s biggest moving target. Apple’s launch information from 2024 described its initial leagues and regions; Apple’s September 2025 update added seven countries and documented further competitions and features. Those dated announcements show why an old list of supported leagues should not be treated as permanent.
ESPN coverage likewise depends on the sport, event rights and country. The same app can show a score globally while restricting a video stream to certain markets or requiring a provider login. Before relying on either app for a particular competition, search for that league in the app and check whether the result includes the score, alerts, video or only a link to another service.

Streaming and watching games
Apple Sports
Apple Sports is primarily a scoreboard, not a complete streaming subscription. For games that have an available viewing option, it can hand you off to Apple TV or a connected streaming app. That handoff is useful when you already have the service carrying the game, but it does not mean every score page includes a stream or that one Apple service supplies all rights.
ESPN
ESPN has the broader in-app viewing proposition. Its app lists live and on-demand events, highlights, radio, podcasts and ESPN+ programming. It also provides a where-to-watch guide. Access still depends on the particular event, your country and whether ESPN requires a qualifying television-provider login or plan. Multiview can show up to four games simultaneously where supported, which is a meaningful advantage for viewers following several live events.
Do you need ESPN+ to use the ESPN app?
No, not for the basic score-and-alert use case. ESPN’s app includes scores, alerts and live play-by-play as core features. ESPN+ or a qualifying television-provider login may be required for particular live streams, on-demand events or ESPN+ programming. The app should identify the requirement when you select that content.
This distinction is important when comparing the apps. Apple Sports can satisfy a score-first need without turning the decision into a streaming purchase. ESPN becomes more valuable if you already have the required access, or if news, highlights and video are worth adding to your scoreboard. Do not infer viewing access from the presence of a score: a listed event is not necessarily an unlocked stream.

Common problems and practical fixes
A game or league is missing
First confirm the country and competition. Apple’s supported regions and leagues have changed since 2024, and ESPN’s rights are event-specific. Search by the exact team or league name, update the app, and check the service’s current availability information. If the score exists but video does not, that is usually an access or rights distinction rather than a score-feed failure.
Best Value
Live Activities do not appear
Make sure you followed the team or event and enabled notifications for the app. On ESPN, review the app’s alert controls as well as the iPhone’s notification settings. On Apple Sports, open the relevant game and check its Live Activity options. Compatibility and behavior can vary by iPhone, Apple Watch, operating-system version and competition.
There are too many alerts
Reduce the teams and leagues you follow, then disable event categories you do not need in ESPN’s alert controls. A focused list is also the best way to keep Apple Sports’ scoreboard glanceable.
A video asks for a login
Read the prompt for that event. ESPN may require a qualifying TV-provider login or plan, while Apple Sports may redirect you to Apple TV or another connected streaming app. Having a score page does not guarantee streaming rights.
Which app should you install?
Choose Apple Sports when these statements describe you
- You check scores several times a day and want the shortest path to the number.
- You prefer a scoreboard over a news-heavy home screen.
- You use an Apple Watch and want live game updates there.
- You want followed teams to carry into Apple TV and Apple News.
- You mainly need scores, play-by-play and statistics rather than video.
Choose ESPN when these statements describe you
- You want scores, news, highlights, radio, podcasts and video in one app.
- You want Dynamic Island Live Activities on a compatible iPhone.
- You follow many teams, leagues and players and want broader personalization.
- You may watch live or on-demand events and accept that some require a provider login or plan.
- You want a where-to-watch guide or supported Multiview for up to four games.
Bottom line
For live scores and low-friction alerts, Apple Sports is the better iPhone app. Its focused scoreboard, play-by-play, Apple Watch support and glanceable Live Activities match a score-first routine. ESPN is the better all-purpose sports hub: choose it when news, highlights, audio, live video, on-demand content and Dynamic Island alerts matter as much as the score. If you follow a less common league or travel between countries, verify current coverage in your region before deciding.
