Apple Smart Keyboard + Bluetooth Mouse for iPad 9th Gen

Best confirmed combination: use Apple’s Smart Keyboard for iPad as the keyboard and a Bluetooth mouse that supports iPadOS. Apple lists the Smart Keyboard for iPad (7th, 8th and 9th generation), while iPadOS supports Bluetooth mice on the ninth-generation iPad. A USB mouse is also possible, but the iPad’s Lightning port means you will need the appropriate adapter.

This guide separates confirmed compatibility from features that depend on a specific third-party model, then shows how to connect everything and fix the problems most likely to occur.

Quick compatibility verdict

Accessory What is confirmed for iPad (9th generation) Connection Important qualification
Apple Smart Keyboard for iPad Apple lists it for iPad (7th, 8th and 9th generation). Designed for the iPad’s Smart Connector. This is the clearest officially listed keyboard fit for the ninth-generation model.
Bluetooth mouse Supported on iPadOS 13.4 or later; Apple’s supported-device list includes iPad (5th generation) or later. Bluetooth pairing in Settings. Check the manufacturer’s exact model and iPadOS compatibility before buying.
USB mouse Apple documents USB mouse support. Wired USB connection through an appropriate cable or adapter. The ninth-generation iPad has a Lightning connector, not USB-C.
Magic Keyboard Folio Not listed for the ninth-generation iPad. Designed for other iPad models. Apple lists this Folio for iPad (10th generation) and iPad (A16), so do not assume it fits.

No current price, stock, battery-life ranking, key-feel test or mouse-performance benchmark is established here. Those vary by listing, region, condition and exact model.

Why the iPad model matters

The iPad (9th generation) was introduced in 2021. Its 10.2-inch display, Bluetooth 4.2, Smart Connector and Lightning connector determine which accessories make sense. A case or keyboard made for a different physical generation can have the wrong dimensions, connector position or camera cutout even when its name sounds similar.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Check that you have the ninth-generation iPad

Before ordering a case-style keyboard, verify the model in Settings > General > About. Confirm that the device is identified as iPad (9th generation), rather than iPad (7th generation), iPad (8th generation), iPad (10th generation) or iPad (A16). The generation matters for the shell and connector alignment; the operating-system requirements matter for the mouse.

The best keyboard choice: Apple Smart Keyboard

Official compatibility

Apple’s keyboard compatibility table lists Smart Keyboard for iPad with iPad (7th, 8th and 9th generation). That makes it the strongest direct-fit recommendation for this specific tablet. It is an attached keyboard cover rather than a separate desktop keyboard, so the keyboard and protective cover are one accessory.

What this choice solves

  • Physical fit: the ninth generation is explicitly included in Apple’s compatibility listing.
  • Port choice: it is intended for the iPad’s Smart Connector instead of requiring a separate Bluetooth pairing procedure.
  • Portability: an attached cover keeps the keyboard with the tablet when you move between locations.

Apple’s compatibility listing establishes fit; it does not establish a particular retailer’s stock, regional keyboard layout, used-condition quality or current price. Inspect the exact listing for those details.

Do not substitute the newer Magic Keyboard Folio

Apple places Magic Keyboard Folio with iPad (10th generation) and iPad (A16). Those are different hardware generations from the iPad (9th generation). A Folio advertised for one of those newer models should not be treated as interchangeable with the ninth-generation iPad simply because both are base-model iPads.

When a separate Bluetooth keyboard makes sense

A separate Bluetooth keyboard can work when you want a full-size layout, a keyboard that stays on a desk, or the ability to use the same keyboard with several devices. Compatibility is not established by the word “iPad” alone, however. Confirm that the manufacturer names iPadOS or the iPad (9th generation), and check whether the keyboard requires a companion app, a particular Bluetooth version or a hardware shortcut mode.

Separate-keyboard checks

  • Look for an explicit iPadOS compatibility statement, not only macOS, Windows or Android support.
  • Confirm the keyboard’s layout for your region; return policies can matter if the printed legends differ from what you expect.
  • Check how the keyboard enters pairing mode and how it switches between stored devices.
  • Verify the power method and charging connector so it fits your routine. No battery-life figures are established for any third-party model.
  • If you need a protective case, make sure the case is sold for the ninth-generation dimensions rather than for the 10th-generation or A16 iPad.

The best mouse type: Bluetooth first

Why Bluetooth is the practical default

Apple says an iPad can connect to “Magic Mouse, another Bluetooth® mouse, or a USB mouse.” Bluetooth avoids occupying the Lightning port and is the simplest choice for a portable setup. The iPad (9th generation) is well within Apple’s supported range because Apple lists iPad (5th generation) or later for Bluetooth mouse and trackpad support.

The operating-system requirement is iPadOS 13.4 or later. Update the iPad before troubleshooting a mouse that will not appear. A generic Bluetooth mouse is therefore a valid category recommendation, but no particular third-party model is verified here. Check the exact manufacturer model, operating-system support and pairing instructions.

USB mouse as a wired alternative

Apple also documents USB mouse connections. On the iPad (9th generation), the physical connector is Lightning, so a USB mouse normally requires an appropriate Lightning-to-USB adapter or equivalent cable. The adapter must support the type of USB connection used by the mouse. A USB-C-only cable cannot plug directly into this iPad.

A wired mouse can be useful when you do not want to manage batteries or Bluetooth pairing, but the adapter adds a part to carry and may leave the Lightning port occupied while you use it.

Mouse generations and gesture limitations

Apple specifically warns that the first-generation Magic Mouse and first-generation Magic Trackpad do not support scrolling or other gestures with iPadOS. The pointer can still appear, but the absence of those gestures changes how the device feels for document and web navigation. Keep this warning limited to those first-generation devices; do not assume every later mouse has the same limitation.

When a compatible Bluetooth mouse or trackpad is connected, iPadOS displays a circular pointer. Pointer appearance confirms that the connection is active, but it does not by itself prove that every button, wheel or gesture is supported. Verify those functions against the exact mouse generation.

How to connect a Bluetooth mouse

  1. Update the iPad: install an iPadOS release that is 13.4 or later.
  2. Prepare the mouse: switch it on, install or charge its battery as directed, and hold its pairing button until it enters discovery mode.
  3. Open Bluetooth settings: on the iPad, go to Settings > Bluetooth and turn Bluetooth on.
  4. Select the device: wait for the mouse to appear under Other Devices, then tap its name.
  5. Complete any prompt: if iPadOS requests confirmation or a code, follow the on-screen instruction.
  6. Test the pointer: move the mouse and check that the circular pointer appears. Test the wheel, buttons and any expected gestures rather than assuming they are available.

Apple notes that a mouse already paired with another device may need to be unpaired before the iPad can discover it. Turn Bluetooth off on the old device or remove the mouse from that device’s saved accessories, then repeat the pairing steps.

How to connect a USB mouse

  1. Confirm that the iPad is running iPadOS 13.4 or later.
  2. Obtain an adapter or cable that connects the mouse’s USB plug to the iPad’s Lightning port.
  3. Connect the adapter to the iPad, then plug in the mouse.
  4. Wait for the pointer to appear and test movement and buttons.
  5. If nothing happens, disconnect the mouse, check that the adapter supports data rather than charging only, and reconnect it.

Because the Lightning port is also used for charging, a wired mouse may require you to disconnect other Lightning accessories or use an adapter designed for the needed combination of connections.

How to attach and use the Smart Keyboard

  1. Check that the keyboard is the Smart Keyboard model listed for iPad (7th, 8th and 9th generation), not a Folio made for a newer iPad.
  2. Align the keyboard’s connector with the iPad’s Smart Connector and attach the cover without forcing it.
  3. Open a text field in an app and type a short test sentence.
  4. If the keys do not respond, detach the keyboard, inspect the connector area for debris or a case blocking contact, and attach it again.
  5. Test the keyboard before applying a screen protector or case that could alter the fit.

The Smart Keyboard recommendation is based on Apple’s model compatibility listing. Key feel, wear, language layout and the condition of an individual unit still depend on the exact item you obtain.

Decision guide: choose the setup that fits your use

Your priority Keyboard choice Mouse choice Trade-off
Most certain model fit Apple Smart Keyboard listed for iPad (9th generation) Bluetooth mouse with iPadOS support Requires checking the mouse’s exact model.
Desk-based typing Separate Bluetooth keyboard confirmed for iPadOS Bluetooth mouse More flexible positioning, but two devices must be paired and carried.
No wireless mouse pairing Smart Keyboard or compatible separate keyboard USB mouse plus Lightning adapter Uses the Lightning port and adds an adapter.
Scrolling and pointer gestures Any keyboard that is explicitly compatible Mouse generation with the required iPadOS controls First-generation Magic Mouse and Magic Trackpad lack scrolling and other gestures on iPadOS.

Buying checklist for a ninth-generation setup

  • Model name: the keyboard listing must identify iPad (9th generation) or the 7th/8th/9th-generation group.
  • Connector: an attached keyboard should match the Smart Connector placement; a wired mouse setup must account for Lightning.
  • Operating system: plan on iPadOS 13.4 or later for mouse support.
  • Mouse connection: choose Bluetooth for a cable-free setup or USB only when you have the correct adapter.
  • Mouse generation: verify whether scrolling, extra buttons and gestures are supported by that exact device.
  • Physical protection: a case and keyboard cover must be sized for the ninth-generation chassis.
  • Listing details: confirm keyboard language, new or used condition, included cables or adapters, regional availability and return terms.

Troubleshooting common failures

The Bluetooth mouse does not appear

  • Confirm iPadOS is 13.4 or later.
  • Put the mouse back into discovery mode; a brief power-on is not always pairing mode.
  • Unpair it from the computer, phone or tablet it last used.
  • Move it close to the iPad and turn off competing Bluetooth connections temporarily.
  • Restart Bluetooth from Settings > Bluetooth, then search under Other Devices again.

The mouse connects but the wheel or gestures do not work

Check the exact generation. Apple’s documented limitation applies to first-generation Magic Mouse and first-generation Magic Trackpad, which do not support scrolling or other gestures with iPadOS. A visible pointer does not override that hardware-specific limitation.

The USB mouse is not detected

  • Check that the adapter connects to Lightning and supports data.
  • Reseat both the adapter and mouse plug.
  • Try the mouse without additional hubs or accessories.
  • Confirm the mouse does not require a driver or software unavailable on iPadOS.
  • Test a known-compatible adapter if the pointer still does not appear.

The Smart Keyboard does not type

  • Verify the keyboard is the Smart Keyboard listed for the 7th, 8th and 9th generations.
  • Remove any case that blocks the Smart Connector.
  • Inspect and gently clean the connector surfaces; do not bend the contacts.
  • Detach and reattach the keyboard, then test in a basic text field.
  • If a used unit remains unresponsive, its condition may be the cause even when the model is nominally compatible.

Final recommendation

For the least ambiguous purchase, choose the Apple Smart Keyboard specifically listed for iPad (9th generation), then add a Bluetooth mouse whose manufacturer confirms iPadOS support. This combination matches Apple’s compatibility guidance, avoids occupying the Lightning port for the mouse and keeps the keyboard physically attached to the tablet. Choose a USB mouse only when a wired connection is preferable and you are prepared to use the correct Lightning adapter. Avoid assuming that the Magic Keyboard Folio for iPad (10th generation) or iPad (A16) fits the ninth-generation model.
